Elston tops IMCA Late Model opener at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 29) – Opening night IMCA Sunoco Late Model honors belonged to Tommy Elston Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Ron Boyse and Elston led the field to green, with Boyse edging out Elston by a nose at the line to lead the first of 20 laps. But Elston used the momentum off the top of the track to grab the lead away from Boyse on lap two. Denny Woodworth, who started fifth, slipped past Boyse on lap three to take over the runner-up spot and from there Woodworth tried to stay in Elston’s tire tracks. CJ season opens with See, Smith scoring IMCA wins

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 29) – The 2020 racing season got underway Friday night at CJ Speedway with IMCA wins going to Jason See and Jacob Smith. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event took the green with veteran Kirk Kinsley setting the pace. Kinsley would lead until the midway point when See was able to move his number 79S to the outside of Kinsley and into the lead. See took the checkers ahead of Kinsley and John Hemstead. Smith drove a perfect race in scoring the win in the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature. The race ran caution-free with Smith leading flag to flag. Brad Havel took second ahead of Jeffrey DeLonjay. With Covid-19 regulations still in place racing was allowed but without fans in the grandstand. Fortunately the regulations will be eased on June 1 allowing racing to be held with fans in attendance beginning this Friday, June 5.

Briese breezes to Kossuth County checkers

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (May 28) – Jason Briese led a fast field of IMCA Modifieds to the flag stand and all the way to the checkered flag Thursday night at Kossuth County Speedway. Briese built a comfortable advantage early as there was a four-car battle for second between Nick Meyer, Jeremy Mills, Brandon Beckendorf and Kelly Shryock. Austin Wolf joined that group to create a six-car breakaway through the first half of the race. Mills took over the runner-up spot at the half way mark of the feature as it was a three-car breakaway by then with Briese, Mills and Shryock. Briese continued to hold the top spot and the only delay to his appearance in the winner’s circle was a yellow flag on nine as the Cleghorn driver gladly took the double checkered flags from flagman Logan Kelly first. 300 Raceway fine tuning for June 3 opener

FARLEY, Iowa – With one practice session left for fine-tuning, promoter R.J. Simon had a promise for IMCA drivers looking forward to opening night next Wednesday at 300 Raceway. “It’s going to be one of the fastest tracks you’ve seen at Farley,” he predicted, with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Late Models, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods all on the June 3 card. The evening’s program will be held in honor of the late Randy Mackey, a long-time track employee at Farley. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing follows 6:30 p.m. hot laps. “We have a test and tune this Friday. STUART, Iowa – IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods chase $3,000 top checks at Stuart Speedway’s June 1-3 Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel. Both 50-lap main events on Wednesday night pay a minimum of $400 to start. Qualifying features Monday and Tuesday send top four finishers to the big shows on June 3. Chassis manufacturers’ races for both divisions pay $1,000 to win with a $50 entry fee and 100 percent payback. Hot laps start at 6:45 p.m. each night. Mach-1 Sport Compacts race on Tuesday. OSBORN, Mo. – Due to rain and saturated grounds, U.S. 36 Raceway officials have canceled racing for May 29. Up next at U.S. 36 Raceway is the Bud Shootout featuring the Sprint Series of Nebraska and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Grandstands open at 6 p.m., with hot laps at 7:30 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $18 for senior and military and children and 12 and younger are free.

Benton County Speedway holds open practice Sunday, May 31

By Jerry Mackey VINTON, Iowa – Sunday, May 31 will be an open practice session for all racers from 4-7 p.m. Pit gates will open at 3 p.m. at The Bullring located on the Benton County Fairgrounds in Vinton. The point racing season will open on June 7 with fans being allowed to attend the races. The racing action will get underway on June 7 with warmups slated to take to the track at 4:30 p.m. with racing to follow at 5 p.m.
