Close racing the rule at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (July 24) – Hot racing action on the track made for some very close tight racing in all the divisions for the Mankato Motorsports and Northland Drying Night Saturday at Arlington Raceway. There was a lot of slicing and dicing in the IMCA Modified feature with three different leaders. Rick Nelson led the first three laps from the pole until Trent Loverude invaded his territory coming from eighth place to battle him. Alongside Loverude was Chad Porter. Loverude took over the lead but only for two laps as Porter led the next three laps. Then the two were driving around lapped traffic and a yellow came out for a spinning car in turn one. On the restart, Dan Menk got the jump on Porter and was now in second behind Loverude … but that didn’t last long as Porter rejoined the two driving from the top of the track to the bottom to gain positions.  With two laps to go, Clint Hatlestad was also in the mix and another caution came out. The Northern SportMods kicked action off with what looked to be another great run by Max Oreskovich jumping to the early lead. Oreskovich led the early part of the race with Schmidt giving him astiff challenge for the top spot.  Jeff Schmuhl and Teske joined the battle up front. As the leaders entered turn one, Oreskovich’s engine expired, taking him to the outside wall and collecting Schmidt, who was able to continue after a trip to pit lane.  Schmuhl also suffered mechanical issues during the caution and retired his car for the night. His series of good IMCA Sunoco Stock Car runs began on June 3 when he brought home a clean sweep of the card at US 30 Speedway, winning his heat from the third row and getting the win in the main event after taking off in fourth. “It was a good night. It seems like we’re getting a good cushion there now,” he said. “We think we’ve pretty much got it figured out what the track is going to do, and we’ve been really fast there lately.” The following night the team towed to Beatrice Speedway.
