Williamson, Berkeley, Peery open up IMCA Wild West Shootout with Coos Bay wins

by Ben Deatherage COOS BAY, Ore. (June 19, 2022) – The 2022 IMCA Wild West Shootout finally kicked off on Sunday after two nights of getting washed away. Coos Bay Speedway had the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods in the house. Sixty-nine entries were on hand among the three Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing program divisions representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. Otis teenager Eston Whisler started the thirty-five-lap IMCA Modified main event with the race lead. However, Corbett’s Collen Winebarger would overtake him the following lap. Winebarger, racing for car owner Jimmy Schram, would receive some pressure shortly after a lap five restart. Collen battled with Brad Martin with Martin obtaining the top spot on the eighth circuit. Great racing, memories fill Hall of Fame Night at Independence

by Jeremy Fox INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 18, 2022) – Saturday Night Independence Motor Speedway inducted the 2022 Hall of Fame class, including Rick Wendling, Darin Burco and Duane Van Deest for drivers. Special contributors inducted were Burco and Jerry Blue. Burco was the first to be inducted as a driver and contributor. Following a hall of fame meet-and-greet and autograph session, over 100 race teams signed in to tame the 3/8 mile dirt oval on the Buchanan County Fairgrounds. The first feature of the night was the 15 lap Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod event. Robert Patava grabbed the top spot early, however Kip Siems stole the lead away from Patava on an early restart, Siems led until he slipped up on lap nine allowing Cole Suckow to take over the race lead. Morgan gets NY-Penn Series redemption at Bloomsburg

For NY-Penn IMCA Modified Series driver Rodney Morgan, that race was Bloomsburg Fair Raceway in 2021. After leading much of that event, invader David Stremme slipped by Morgan late to take the win. Coming back to Bloomsburg on June 19th, Morgan was determined to get back the one he missed out on a year ago. Series points leader Keith Jack Lamphere set the pace for the beginning of the 25 lap feature, with Ray McClure starting to his outside. Once the green flag waved, Lamphere took the race lead. McClure faded back as Rodney Morgan slid up to second, bringing David Stremme and Brad Sites along with him. The caution waved on lap four as Shawn Bruce found the turn one wall. Olson drives borrowed car to victory at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (June 19, 2022) – One driver didn’t think he’d be able to race while another wasn’t sure he’d even make it to the track. Both ended up in victory lane in an unlikely turn of events Sunday at Benton County Speedway. After suffering extensive damage to his own ride Saturday night, Kyle Olson wasn’t planning on racing Sunday. That all changed when Brandon Tharp asked him to drive his car. Tharp, who underwent an emergency appendectomy early Sunday morning and was sidelined for the evening, offered his ride to Olson for Sunday’s racing program at The Bullring. By night’s end, both drivers were posing for victory lane photos after Olson raced Tharp’s #B21 to the winner’s circle in the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods. Kenawell Makes it a Double Weekend with Hagerstown win

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (June 18, 2022) – Stevie Kenawell stared the weekend winning with the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series at Dog Hollow Speedway and then followed it up at the Annual Dad’s Night Out weekend at Hagerstown Speedway by wiring the feature from pole to checkers. The Hagerstown event has been a highlight since the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series, PASS and Virginia Sprint Series got together at Hagerstown a few years ago for the once a year three series race. Kenawell and Dylan Shatzer paced the feature field to green and Kenawell took off with Shatzer in tow. The whole field was dicing for positions in all grooves behind them. MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 18, 2022) – Saturday, June 18th provided perfect weather for the racing action at Maquoketa Speedway. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature win went to fourth row outside starter Tim Current. Current wheeled his #12T to the front quickly taking the lead from Steve Johnson on lap number four. Current’s teammate Ryan Duhme ran second on Saturday night ahead of Travis Denning. A strong field of Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods ran a caution-free 15 lap main event on Saturday night. Brown gets Modified win, Spaw stays hot at CJ Speedway

Brown chased down race leader Kurt Kile making the pass at the midway point of the feature and went to score the win ahead of Matt Werner and Kile. Johnny Spaw has made three visits to CJ Speedway in 2022 and has scored the win every time he has raced in the very tough IMCA Sunoco Stock Car class. Spaw took the lead early from Kenny O’Donnell and went on to score an impressive win ahead of Matt Picray, who advanced from the third row and scored his best finish of the season.
