Smith sails to Saturday checkers at Eagle’s Ice Breaker Challenge

In what was arguably the best race of the Ice Breaker Challenge Weekend, Dylan Smith raced from 12th starting to win the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified finale, chasing down Chris Abelson for the $2,000 checkers. “That was pretty good after starting 12th. I made some good passes early and kept pushing,” said Smith, already on the ballot for September’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I’m sure glad that the Sprints widened out the track for our feature. With all of the beating and banging I decided to move up top. Neal adds to Deery Series success with fourth career win at Jackson County

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 19) – After four lead changes involving four different drivers, Terry Neal won a Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Jackson County Speedway for the fourth time Saturday night. Neal caught Andy Eckrich coming to the white flag in the 40-lapper, then held on to beat Eckrich to the checkers by not much more than inches. The IMCA Late Model tour victory was worth $3,000. Jeff Aikey, Nate Beuseling and Tommy Elston completed the top five. Neal had won the first of three straight Deery features at Maquoketa during his 2005 series championship season. Elston started from the pole and set the fast pace the first 15 circuits despite a couple early cautions that kept the field close. He gave way to Beuseling on lap 16. Humphries wins first Fast Friday feature at Eastside

By Jim Haines WAYNESBORO, Va. (April 18) – Defending tour champion Tom Humphries proved the fastest in the first of four Fast Friday Virginia Sprint Series events of the season at Eastside Speedway. Humphries had to reel in Chad Worrell, taking advantage and the lead when Worrell got too high and then holding off Jerald Harris for the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car feature victory. Completing the top five were French Grimes, Worrell and Tony Harris. Charlie Ware and Chris Ware paced the field to green but Worrell found his way to the front on lap three. He stayed smooth up top and traffic was no problem as the laps clicked off but the bottom was slowly getting better and both Humphries and Jerald Harris began reeling him in. FARLEY, Iowa (April 16) – Too much rain and not enough time to get the half-mile dirt oval race-ready get the blame for postponement of Friday’s scheduled Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Farley Speedway. DeVilbiss is double winner in Border States Racing Series twin bill at Desert Thunder

PRICE, Utah (April 11-12) – Everything went right for Zane DeVilbiss in the inaugural Border States Racing Series doubleheader at Desert Thunder Raceway. DeVilbiss swept Friday and Saturday IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified features at Price, earning his career 96th and 97th feature wins in the division. After starting eighth on opening night, DeVilbiss finally got the best of Michael Hale after a back-and-forth battle for the front spot on the tacky oval. Aaron Spangler, Dylan Hatch and Dusty Safley rounded out the top five in the time-shortened show. Track conditions were on the slick side Saturday as DeVilbiss made his way from 11th starting to first in a fast-paced 30-lapper. Harris tops Virginia Sprint Series opener

(April 12) – As pilot of the North of Rome Farms sprinter, Jerald Harris raced his way to the front taking the opening race of the pavement season for the Virginia Sprint Series Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field with Charlie out first on lap one and Brian Lawson taking up the chase. Lawson went around Ware into the lead. Tom Humphries was up to second with French Grimes, Harris and Anthony Linkenhoker all close behind. Lawson still led at halfway after a quick caution for a slowing car. Lawson took off on the restart but Harris was on a charge and got to third and two laps later he was on Humphries.
