Donnelly wins 1st, Yeager wins 15th in EQ Wild West Tour opening twinbill

DELTA, Utah (May 2-3) – A first-time winner and a regular visitor to victory lane prevailed when the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour opened at Millard County Raceway. Jake Donnelly regained the lead from Justen Yeager and took the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified checkers for his career first tour triumph on Friday. Yeager, a three-time series champion, battled Casey Delp and Randy Artz en route to the front, then captured his 15th career WWMT win ahead of Michael Hale on Saturday. Both 30-lap features paid $1,000 to win. Donnelly is new to the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot while Yeager was already vote eligible. The high line took Donnelly to the front twice. He used the top to pass Bryan Wordelman for the lead on the first lap, then built up a big lead before becoming mired in lapped traffic. Yeager caught up and passed Donnelly before the pair came up on a lapped car late in the race. Yeager went low while Donnelly found better grip higher up on the oval and [Read More]

Czarneski collects $1,000 in first Red, White & Blue race at 141

By Greg Aregoni FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (May 3) – Tim Czarneski stepped up to win round one of the Red, White and Blue Series and $1,000 Saturday night at 141 Speedway. The victory in the first of three RW & B specials for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at 141 this season put Czarneski on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. It also gave him an early leg up in the race to win a 604 crate engine from series sponsor Gandrud Chevrolet. Traveler Darin Duffy found himself the early leader of a race that saw cautions slow the early going. Duffy put distance on the field through the first five laps. Czarneski then found the high line and started to reel in the frontrunner. “I wanted to pass him off of turn two when I caught him but he pushed in (corners) three and four, so that’s when I dove inside for the lead,” Czarneski said of what proved to be his race-winning pass on lap eight. Czarneski then moved back [Read More]

Carter pulls off second straight at Salina

SALINA, Kan. (May 2) – After a strong opening night last week, everyone was waiting to see if Salina Speedway could follow up on the magic from week one. Yes, they could. One driver in particular, Austin Carter, is enjoying the 2014 season. After Friday night at Salina Speedway Carter remains undefeated on the season in the M&H Motors IMCA Northern SportMod division as he won his second straight feature. It wasn’t an easy win for Carter. He started 10th on the grid and there were some tough competitors in the 20-car main. Tyler Post looked to have the win all but locked up. Post started eighth in but by virtue of picking drivers off one at a time he found himself at the front of the pack. Post, unfortunately, had to deal with a late-race yellow. As the restart got underway Carter found a way to take over the lead and go on to the win. A good old fashioned barn burner had the fans on their feet for the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stock [Read More]

New winners in week two at Riviera Raceway

By Randy Pospishil sports@norfolkdailynews.com NORFOLK, Neb. (May 3) – Four different drivers made it to victory lane at Riviera Raceway in week two … in fact, none of the four had been in the top three the week before. Ramsey Meyer of Pierce won the feature for the Mach-1 Sport Compacts, while three Norfolk drivers took home trophies in the other divisions, including Jim Kimmel in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks race, Nelson Vollbrecht in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod, and Robert Osborne in Grand Nationals. For Meyer, last year’s national champion, this season’s first win at Riviera is his sixth first-place finish so far in 2014, well ahead of last season’s pace when, at this same time, he had no wins. “We’ve won races in three different states so far,” Meyer said. “We won specials in Kansas and South Dakota. At one time we were the points leader in three different states. We’re ahead of schedule so far, we just need to keep it up. We did well in the specials, so we’re just [Read More]

Kay challenged, but not caught in Quad City’s Roberts Memorial Deery

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 4) – Justin Kay was challenged but never caught in Sunday’s Hershel Roberts Memorial Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Quad City Speedway. Kay started on the pole and led all 58 laps of the IMCA Late Model tour event, held in memory of the popular East Moline driver and car owner. Sticking to the lower line all around the oval, the tour point leader took the $3,000 checkers in front of a very full grandstand and ahead of Jeff Aikey, hard charger Joel Callahan, Mike Murphy Jr. and defending series champion Brian Harris. Jason Rauen nipped at Kay’s heels before falling back. Aikey came from 12th starting and Callahan from 17th to join Murphy and Harris in their pursuit of the leader. Restarts gave each the opportunity to challenge Kay but none could catch up after the green flag came back out. Tyler Bruening took a provisional and also advanced 14 spots, to eighth. Aikey won the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing. Random tire samples were taken following [Read More]
