Ed Turnbull tops IMCA Modifieds at Estevan’s Race For Life

ESTEVAN, Sask. (Sept. 21) – Ed Turnbull banked $3,000 after a mistake-free run to the checkers in Sunday’s Race For Life main event for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Estevan Motor Speedway. Turnbull started the 25-lapper from the sixth spot and passed Jett Big Eagle and then Mason Big Eagle for the lead on lap 11. He led to the finish, putting some distance on Mason Big Eagle in the late going. Steven Pfeifer, Travis Hagen and Jett Big Eagle completed the top five. “Late in the race I met lapped traffic in my line and went lower to get by,” Turnbull said. “Not knowing how far Mason was behind me, I figured one mistake and the party would be over. Thornton, Noll top Canyon’s Desert Classic main events

By Lonnie Wheatley PEORIA, Ariz. (Sept. 19-20) – Ricky Thornton Jr. and Jason Noll were $1,500 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature winners at Canyon Speedway Park’s Desert Classic. Thornton’s 13th win of the year at Canyon came on Friday, opening night of the 26th annual special. Noll became a 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational candidate when he collected the Saturday checkers. Chased to the line by ninth-starter George Fronsman, Thornton had drawn the outside front row spot on the grid for Friday’s feature. Mike Strobl raced from 19th to take the show position. Mark Stewart and Jason Noll rounded out the top five. Noll put a stop to Thornton’s CSP domination on night two. He raced from the third position to snare his first CSP feature win since topping the Winter Classic opener on Jan. 24. Kay nears Deery Series title with win at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Sept. 20) – Justin Kay took a big step toward another IMCA championship with his fifth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win of the season Saturday at Davenport Speedway. With a second straight national title already secured and a 30-point advantage over Andy Eckrich, Kay can clinch his career first series title by starting his heat race when the IMCA Late Model tour concludes in a two-day event Oct. 3 and 4 at West Liberty Raceway. Kay’s latest win paid $3,000 and came by reining in Eckrich, who had started on the pole and led the first 27 of 35 laps on the half-mile oval at Davenport. After working his way up from 10th starting, Kay was inside and almost side-by-side with Eckrich, one groove higher and always ahead when the two crossed the stripe. Johnny DeYoung wins “awesome” Great Lakes Nationals

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Sept. 13) – Johnny DeYoung was the first and the final leader in Crystal Motor Speedway’s season-ending Great Lakes Nationals. Saturday’s $3,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory Saturday night put him on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Chad Wernette was second, a couple car lengths off the pace, and Vern Buskirk, Kenny Playter and Jimmy Hale Jr. rounded out the top five. “We had a pretty good season to say the least,” DeYoung exclaimed, following his sixth checkered flag run of the year at Crystal. “It was an awesome race and it was awesome to win it.” He’d rocketed from dead last to win his heat race, then drew the outside front row starting spot for the 50-lap main event and led the first four circuits. IMCA’s Friesen Chevrolet Empire State Series returning to Skyline

CORTLAND, N.Y. (Sept. 17) – Round five of the Friesen Chevrolet Empire State Series takes touring IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds to Skyline Raceway for a Turbo Blue Championship Weekend show. Modifieds race for $400 to win and a minimum of $75 to start their 25-lapper this Saturday, Sept. 20 at Cortland. Matt Cole of Binghamton tops the current standings, just a single point ahead of Port Crane’s James Cornell. Pit gates and the grandstand both open at 3 p.m. Hot laps are at 5:45 p.m. and racing is at 6:30 p.m. There is no entry fee; pit passes are $35. Spectator admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students and free for kids nine and under accompanying a paid adult. Chris Fleming was the winner when the series visited Skyline during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Cornell, Cole and Gary Roberts have also won Empire State Series features this season. Tire tests complete, Yankee results are official

VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 17) – Feature results are now official for both Saturday, Sept. 13 Deery Brothers Summer Series and XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour events held during the 37th annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway. Tire samples were taken from the top five finishers in the IMCA Late Model tour main event and from the top two in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main. All met the criteria for baseline Hoosier tire samples in the respective divisions. Checks have been mailed to all seven drivers.

Borgen is spectacular at Buffalo River Fargo Tractor special

GLYNDON, Minn. (Sept. 13-14) – A driver who is no stranger to victory lane at Buffalo River Race Park found his way to that hallowed ground again Sunday night. Bryce Borgen topped the $1,000 to win IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event in the 2014 season finale. The two-time BRRP track champion earned a spot on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational along with the Fargo Tractor IMCA Spectacular checkers. Deveryn Malmlov, Saturday winner Justin Jones, Michael Greseth and Cody Erickson completed the top five. Borgen had started fourth and was most of a straightaway behind Jones before starting his drive to the front. “All of a sudden my car just came alive,” Borgen said following his third sanctioned win of the season. “I’d run second on Saturday night. IMCA Modifieds join Sept. 19, 20 Stock Car Stampede at Jamestown Speedway

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds join the Stock Car Stampede special at Jamestown Speedway, racing for $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start this Saturday, Sept. 20. Heat races begin on Friday, Sept. 19 with “B” features preceding Saturday’s main event, a qualifier for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Belleville Motorsports North Central Region and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded. Phillips County Raceway crowns track champions

HOLYOKE, Colo. (Sept. 13) – Phillips County Raceway wrapped up the last race of the season with a double feature ending with the track championships for each division. The night started off by running four features postponed from Aug. 23 due to inclement weather. Garrett Sporhase checked out and won the first IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main, followed by Zach Hilzer and Jesse Taylor. The Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main was taken by Chad Dolan ahead of of Brandon Clough and Mike Lininger. Justin Bussell collected the checkers in a dandy of a first feature for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Kyle Clough and Gregory Gutt completed the top three.
