North Star Series checkers fly for five, Benson best in Arlington Sprint tour field

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Sept 13) – Six drivers won IMCA special events features Saturday at Arlington Raceway. Redline Racing Parts North Star Series victories went to Brandon Beckendorf in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, Dan Mackenthun in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Eric Larson in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, Justin Luinenburg in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Nate Coopman in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Clint Benson made another long tow from Nebraska pay off with the RaceSaver Sprint Series of Minnesota triumph. Chad Porter had the early lead in the Modified feature but on the fifth lap, Beckendorf got around him and led the remaining 15 laps. The tour win was his second straight and career sixth, matching Beckendorf with Eric Dailey for the all-time lead in the division. Curt Lund was a distant second and Jerry Wren took third. Humphries cruises to Sprint Series win at Eastside

By Jim Haines WAYNESBORO, Va. (Sept. 12) – Tom Humphries won the final Fast Friday event of the year at Eastside Speedway to close out the dirt schedule for the Virginia Sprint Series. The IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour win was Humphries’ fourth this season. Chris Ware and Anthony Linkenhoker paced the field to green and Linkenhoker was out first with Brian Lawson and Humpries already on the way by lap one. Humphries was by Lawson on lap three and all over Linkenhoker by lap seven. Humphries saw a gap with the rear of the field coming up and shot through into the lead, then cruised to the win. Linkenhoker, Lawson, Ryan Price and Daren Bolac completed the top five. McCollum wins 100th career Stock Car feature at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Aug. 30) – Jeff McCollum made history at Arlington Raceway on Saturday night when he won the B&B Racing Chassis IMCA Stock Car feature. The victory was McCollum’s career 100th in the sanctioned division. Chris Meyer was the early leader, ahead of Brent Uecker. Lap six saw a yellow flag for a spun car in the first turn. McCollum restarted in the third row and shot through the field to take third place; he was then battling with Uecker, Dan Mackenthun and Shaun Bruns for the lead. By lap nine, McCollum was the leader with Mackenthun close behind. Uecker fell out on lap 10 but Mackenthun wasn’t giving up. Another caution flag came out on lap 16. On the restart Mackenthun got too high in turns three and four, losing two spots. McCollum was then challenged by Bruns but held on for the landmark win. Hale hauls from back to win EQ Wild West Tour feature at Atomic

ATOMIC CITY, Idaho (Aug. 23) – Michael Hale was quick to credit the track crew at Atomic Motor Raceway with an assist following his Saturday night EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour victory. The Friday night event for traveling IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds had been lost to rain, which left flooded track and pit conditions in its wake. A long day of work made the 1/3-mile dirt oval raceable, however. The chief beneficiary of those efforts was Hale, who restarted at the back after exiting early in the 30-lapper to fix a broken tie rod. Fastest down the backstretch, he quickly worked his way toward the front to challenge leader Tony Steward, taking the lead and bringing the 20th starting Casey Delp along into second near midway. “The car worked really well coming out of (turn) two,” Hale said of his career third Wild West Tour checkers. “It was a fun race and I appreciate how much work went into getting the track ready. Sobbing is tops in Tipton XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 19) – And then there were nine. Jesse Sobbing became the ninth different winner in as many XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour events this season on Tuesday night at Cedar County Raceway. He bested a stellar field of 45 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds for the victory that paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Brad Diercks, 16th starting Brian Webb, Darin Duffy and Kyle Brown completed the top five. Steve Stewart drew the pole start and battled back and forth with Sobbing much of the first half in the 30-lapper. Stewart used the low line while Sobbing stayed on the high side, finally finding his way past near midway. Duffy then gave chase, also up top, while Diercks and Stewart contested for third. Two late cautions interrupted the action when Richie Gustin and Dustin Kraklio went off the top of the oval in the second set of turns. Kay is convincing in Deery Series feature win at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 19) – Justin Kay continues to do his best to take the suspense out of the Deery Brothers Summer Series points battle. Kay started on the pole and led every time around the track in winning Tuesday’s IMCA Late Model tour main event at Cedar County Raceway. The feature ran green to checkered and probably took less time than Kay will need to deposit his $3,000 check, the fourth he’s endorsed this season. Kyle Hinrichs ran second most of the way at Tipton and eventually crossed the stripe four car lengths behind Kay. Tyler Bruening pressured Hinrichs before ending in third. Brian Harris and Brian Beaudry completed the top five. Scott Fitzpatrick won the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing. Gustin takes XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers at Benton County

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 18) – Richie Gustin raced to his career seventh XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature win on the night Tyler Droste nearly raced to his first. Gustin caught Droste with two circuits left in Monday’s 30-lapper for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, then pulled ahead to take the $1,000 checkers by four car lengths. He’s now the eighth different winner in as many tour events this season. Defending series champion Ronn Lauritzen, early leader Vern Jackson and Joe Docekal completed the top five. Jackson started outside the front row and led the first 19 laps. Droste had drawn the pole and wasn’t much more than half a car length off the pace much of that distance. Getting a good run out of the fourth turn, Droste took the lead on lap 20, right before a quick succession of three yellow flags. Gustin sped along the lower line. Reed makes SST history with 281 feature win

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Aug. 16) – Reagan Reed raced to a couple of firsts Saturday night at 281 Speedway. And she had to regain the lead from a former national champion to accomplish both feats. The 16-year-old junior-to-be at Waco’s Connally High School earned her career first IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car feature win at Stephenville. She became the first female driver to win a Sprint Series of Texas main event as well. “I couldn’t believe it,” admitted Reed. “I was excited for my dad and my crew and wished my brother (who was racing in Michigan) could have been there to see it.” Reed campaigned five seasons in the mini-sprints. She had just nine starts under her belt during her rookie Sprint Car season before getting the Saturday win. Dolan dominates State Fair Show for career first Deery win

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Ryan Dolan took home one of the biggest prizes from the Iowa State Fair Monday night: A check for $3,000. Dolan won his career first Deery Brothers Summer Series event, topping the 35-lap IMCA Late Model tour event at the State Fairgrounds Speedway. “My dad (Roger) has won races at Des Moines. If you’re going to win a Deery Series race, that’s the one,” said Dolan, who started outside Joel Callahan on the front row. “It was just a fantastic night of racing.” “I followed Callahan for a couple laps and took the lead when he pushed up,” he continued. “The track was fast and I thought with the way the car was handling, I’d be tough to pass.” Scott Fitzpatrick was a career-best second. Brown is best at 85 for 100th IMCA Modified career win

SCURRY, Texas (Aug. 9) – A guy who never intended to be a race car driver drove to his 100th IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified career win Saturday night. Scotty Brown cruised to the landmark checkers at 85 Speedway. He‘s the 40th driver in division history and the fourth to do so this season. Very possibly, Brown is also IMCA’s first 100-time feature winner who got into the sport with no intention of ever actually racing. “I really got into this by accident,” he explains. “I had never been around racing until I was about 17 and a friend I met at high school asked me to help him.” “We were at the track when his mom found out what he wanted to do. She let us know that he would not be racing,” Brown continued. “I was handed the keys, I jumped in the car and I’ve been hooked ever since.
