Ricketts stars in IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Smackdown

KILGORE, Texas – John Ricketts was the winner when a pair of former national champions battled it out Saturday at Lone Star Speedway. Ricketts caught up with Chad Wilson 17 circuits into the 25-lap Smackdown main event for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars, then worked lapped traffic en route to the $1,200 checkers. “With the people in front of me, I didn’t think I had a shot at winning but we had luck on our side,” said Ricketts, who had started seventh. “It’s not every day you can pass Chad in clean air. Usually when he gets up front, he’s gone.” Wilson, IMCA’s 2015 national champion, was running second when the lead car and a lapped car tangled and restarted at the front. Ricketts stayed in the high line to chase down Wilson and get the lead two laps later. He passed two cars on the final lap and had a half a straightaway advantage at the end. “We had a good car and we’re excited about the win,” said Ricketts, the 2013 national king. “Getting [Read More]

IMCA Modifieds, Northern SportMods return to Fernley

FERNLEY, Nev. – Seven race nights are on the schedule this season at Fernley 95A Speedway for IMCA Modifieds and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Opening night at the 3/8-mile clay oval is April 7. Both divisions are on May 27, July 21, Aug. 11, Aug. 24 and Sept. 15 programs before IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing season championship events on Sept. 29. Sanctioned Modifieds last ran at Fernley in 2016. Northern SportMods ran there a single season, in 2013. “We took last season off to do maintenance and upkeep to the facility,” explained first-year promoter Matt Sherman. “The one race we had was for a touring sprint car group.” Another four inches of a clay/gypsum mixture was added all the way around the track and new restroom facilities were built during the hiatus. “Taking the season off gave some drivers the chance to build new cars,” said Sherman, who has worked at Fernley 95A since 2003. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from the community and from racers.” “Drivers are excited about being able [Read More]

New promoter finds ‘hidden gem’ in 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa –Bradley Stevens will be in charge of weekly programs at a track he likens to “a hidden gem.” Stevens has purchased 34 Raceway from Jeff and Amy Laue. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and newly-sanctioned Mach-1 Sport Compacts run Saturday nights at the Southeast Iowa speedplant. The IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season begins April 7 and continues through Sept. 29 at the 3/8-mile dirt oval. “This track ranks right up there with the best tracks in the Midwest. It’s a hidden gem – there are still people who don’t realize what we’ve got here,” said Stevens, whose purchase of the track began with a casual conversation with the Laues and was encouraged by significant other Jessi Mynatt. “We’re just going to tweak some things.” “We’re going to do everything we can to get families to the track,” he emphasized. “We’re going to be real keen on prices with a family pack deal and we’ll run four classes every week and two others every other week. Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are new at Estevan Motor Speedway

ESTEVAN, Sask. – Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods become the fourth IMCA division on weekly race programs at Estevan Motor Speedway. Opening night is May 5. “We have looked into this for a long time. One of the things we like best about Northern SportMods is that they are a fast-growing class,” said Byron Fichter, president of the Estevan Auto Racing Club. “We felt it would be a good time to add this class, especially for younger drivers looking for a progression from our slingshot class to the Modified division.” “We have done a ton of research and with Nodak Speedway and Williston Basin Speedway close, we have been able to see the class grow,” he continued. “It’s exciting and inexpensive to get into.” Estevan also sanctions the IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock divisions. A dozen race nights are scheduled this season, most of them on Saturdays, with season championship night penciled in for Aug. 25. “Our Northern SportMod division is a natural complement to sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and [Read More]

Wolla outruns Marriott for Dirt Dominator win at Canyon

By Mike Spieker PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 13) – The Karl Performance Arizona IMCA Modified Tour made its way to Canyon Speedway Park Tuesday for a practice night in preparation for rounds five and six. Following the night’s test and tune session was the second round of the Dirt Dominator bracket race. The final round came down to a heavyweight matchup between defending IMCA Modified national champion, Jason Wolla, and defending tour point champion Hunter Marriott. Marriott won the coin toss for lane choice and elected the inside line, which was where the majority of the rounds were won throughout the event. That didn’t matter to Wolla, however. Marriott and Wolla got the green flag down the backstretch and were door-to-door into turns three and four. Wolla put his no. 27 machine up on the cushion and used his momentum to carry him to the lead on the front straightaway. Marriott was forced to play catch up the remaining two circuits but stayed within striking distance. Wolla left the bottom lane open for Marriott in the [Read More]
