Drive For Five Late Model honors to Eckrich, Long is IMCA Modified winner at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (July 2) – Dave Eckrich proved the fastest in a field of 27 IMCA Sunoco Late Models, earning $1,000 for his Friday night Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For Five qualifying feature win. Ron Klein and Eckrich drew front row starts for the 25-lapper, with Klein out ahead of Eckrich and Jay Johnson after a couple early restarts. Eckrich used his momentum off the top of the track coming out of turn four to take the lead on lap two. The pace Eckrich set put him into lapped traffic on lap nine, which allowed Klein, Gary Webb and Johnson to close in. Disaster struck fourth running Johnson on lap 11 as he spun under the flag stand and collected eighth running Logan Duffy. On the restart, Eckrich jumped back out front, with Klein and Webb close behind. Then just after the lap was scored complete, Kevin Peters spun in turn 4 and collected Ray Raker to bring out the caution. Eckrich again grabbed the lead on the restart with Tommy Elston, who started [Read More]

Abelson is successful in home track defense as Midwest Madness Tour visits Buena Vista

ALTA, Iowa (June 30) – A track that’s been very good to Chris Abelson in the past was good to the Sioux City speedster Wednesday night. Abelson got the best of Anthony Roth for the lead early into the IMCA Modified main event, then led to the finish of the 30-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod Midwest Madness Tour/Kyle Suter Memorial show at Buena Vista Raceway.  “I’ve raced at Alta a long time. I did have a home track advantage and that goes a long ways,” said Abelson, a seven-time Modified track champion at BVR. “It’s always good to win here – You never want somebody to come beat you at your home track.” That “somebody” Wednesday night was Californian Cody Laney, who worked his way up from ninth starting to second. A caution with eight laps left bunched the field back up by Abelson was able to stay in front to the checkers. Roth, Tuesday winner Kyle Brown and Dakota Sproul completed the top five.  One thousand dollars richer, Abelson was already a Fast Shafts [Read More]

Good lap, good line good for Brown, Green in IMCA Midwest Madness Tour at Clay County

SPENCER, Iowa (June 29) – A really good lap put Kyle Brown in victory lane while a really fast line did the trick for Derek Green on night two of the Karl Kustoms Midwest Madness Tour. Brown got the best of Cody Thompson in a green, white, checkered IMCA Modified finish Tuesday at Clay County Fair Speedway. Green put on a show of his own in racing to IMCA Sunoco Stock Car career win number 98. Both $1,000 feature wins carried September bonuses, putting Brown on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot and making Green eligible for B & B Chassis All-Star Invitational qualifying. Top-notch rookie contender Thompson had passed Chris Abelson for the Modified lead, then swapped the front spot with Brown before the late caution. Brown restarted on the inside, caught Thompson the next time around and then focused on becoming an All-Star candidate. “I just made a really good lap. It was a really good race. It was fun,” he said. “I know Cody is always good on the top side and [Read More]

Six new winners find victory lane at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (June 24) – For the first five weeks at Kossuth County Speedway, a handful of drivers have dominated the six weekly divisions. That all changed as six different drivers found victory lane for the first time this summer at the track on Thursday, June 24.  The main attraction of the night was the $1,000 to win Wyffels Hybrid sponsored Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod special as Gerald Curry and Alex Smith brought the 17-car field to the flag stand.  Curry jumped out front early and kept his no. 32 rig out front with Austin Schrage lurking  two to three car lengths behind but seemingly could get no closer. Every time Schrage inched a little tighter, Curry increased his lead the next lap and went onto to claim the first place prize money in the biggest win of his racing career.  Schrage held on the runner-up slot as Alec Fett was third, Matt Looft was fourth and Smith rounded out the five cars. Izac Mallicoat earned an extra $200 as the hard [Read More]

Bard is bullish in PASS win at Path Valley

By Frank Buhrman SPRING RUN, Pa. (June 26) – It’s not that Garrett Bard doesn’t race well at Path Valley Speedway. In his last seven starts there, he had finished second four times, third once and fourth once.  But his only previous win in a full-sized sprint car had come in September of 2019, and since then he had won 14 Pennsylvania Sprint Series features, plus non-PASS victories, at other tracks.  That picture got brighter Saturday night when Bard emerged from a furious three-way battle to win the 25-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature at the quarter-mile Spring Run bullring.  Bard was swapping the lead in traffic with hard-luck Kenny Heffner, with Jared Zionkowski looking for an opening, when Heffner dove to the inside on lap 23 and spun. Freed of traffic after the ensuing caution, Bard held off Zionkowski for the win, his second of the season. Zionkowski held on for the runner-up finish, .895 seconds behind Bard but ahead of Steve Kenawell, prior Path Valley winner Mikell McGee and John Walp. The PASS [Read More]

Becerra roars to East Moline Mix Memorial cash

By Rob Hinckley  EAST MOLINE, Ill. (June 27) – Lap after lap, Austin Becerra did not change his strategy and knew he would not. The Carthage, Ill., ace went to the top groove and stayed there the entire 20 laps of the Mike Mix Memorial SportMod Shootout Sunday evening at East Moline Speedway. Becerra wheeled around Cody Calam and Adam Birck, then held off Jarett Franzen for the $1,000 Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod win. “The track had some character and you have to (be able to) run the top like that,” Becerra said in the Winner’s Circle. “I’m not a bottom feeder so I had to make the top work.” Becerra waited out a couple cautions, but always pulled away from the field. Franzen, Birck, Nathan Balensiefen and Logan Veloz rounded out the top five. “Franzen is the class of the field here and I saw his nose under me a couple times. I knew running the top I could have the momentum.”  Not to be overshadowed, Hall of Famer Gary Webb put on a [Read More]
