Kay nips Eckrich, Huston scores first win at West Liberty

By Jerry Mackey WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (June 11) – Saturday night’s racing action at West Liberty Raceway included close finishes and lots of wheel to wheel racing on a smooth and extremely fast race track. The headliner of the night was the 25 lap iWireless IMCA Late Model feature. The race saw Jonathan Brauns lead several laps before mechanical issues sidelined him on lap 18. Andy Eckrich took over the point and appeared to be on his way to his first win of 2016 at West Liberty. Justin Kay closed in on Eckrich as the feature wound down and Kay was able to move inside of Eckrich as the frontrunners headed to the checkered flag. Kay led the final 100 feet and took the checkers just ahead of Eckrich. Nick Marolf came under the checkers in third. Gaylord opens Shoot Out with Southern Oregon victory

(June 11) – Ryan Gaylord came oh-so-close to winning the Wild West IMCA Modified Shoot Out feature last summer at Willamette Speedway, leading most of the way before coming up second in a photo finish to Alex Stanford. He was in the picture again when that the 2016 tour opened Saturday at Southern Oregon Speedway, this time in victory lane. More than 40 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified entries filled up the pit area for an event that would entertain fans from start to finish. Polesitter Collen Winebarger seized the initiative in the main event and took the lead on the opening circuit. Winebarger found himself in a battle with Gaylord around lap 20. Gaylord eventually secured the lead but wasn’t quite out of the woods quite yet. The Lakewood, Colo., traveler had his hands full in the last 15 laps with Californian Kellen Chadwick. Boone checkers fly for Dickerson

BOONE, Iowa (June 11) – Russ Dickerson took charge by lap five of Saturday’s 20-lap main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and drove to his first win this season at Boone Speedway. Dickerson started eighth and was content to let the others duke it out behind him. He took the checkers by a comfortable margin. Denny Pittman held back point leader Mike Van Genderen until the final lap, when Van Genderen surged past to finish second, Pittman taking third. A close fourth went to defending track champion Jimmy Gustin, and Matthew Meinecke was fifth. The race went caution-free after an initial no start. Rookie Cody Gustoff took advantage of his pole starting position, jumping to the immediate IMCA Sunoco Stock Car lead. Craig Carlson, who had started right behind Gustoff, began pestering him and took over as leader at lap six. Wolla checks out in Dacotah feature

MANDAN, N.D. (June 10) – Jason Wolla made Friday’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature at Dacotah Speedway a race for second place as he led all 25 times around the oval. Wolla pulled away quickly as John Corell had his hands full trying to hold off Marlyn Seidler for second. The low line was the fast line as Tracy Domagala tried to find a way around Drew Christianson for fourth. As Wolla started catching lapped traffic with 12 laps to go, Domagala passed Christianson for fourth place. While racing for sixth place, Donald Robinson got into Travis Ulmer, bringing out the caution with eight laps to go. However, Wolla pulled away once again on the restart. Point leader Seidler passed Corell for second, bringing Spencer Wilson with him. Wilson, working in the highline, passed Seidler with four laps to go. Second-year driver wins career first Virginia Sprint Series feature

By Jim Haines ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (June 10) – Second-year driver J.D. Coats showed his heat race earlier in the evening was no fluke as he raced to his career first Virginia Sprint Series win in a Fast Friday Feature at Dixieland Speedway. Coats and Bill Rice paced the IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green before a full house of fans at the coastal Carolina speedway. Coats was out first with Rice up high but on lap three Mike Leraas made his way to second. The pack from the back was starting to pressure the lead duo with Daren Bolac getting there first and getting to second on lap 15 as traffic came into play. Jerald Harris was on Leraas for third as Bolac was pressuring Coats, but it would be for naught as Coats stayed fast and smooth taking the win. Tri-City’s Greased Pig special pays $1,066 to IMCA Modified winner

AUBURN, Mich. – Tri-City Motor Speedway’s sixth annual Greased Pig special is Friday, June 17 and pays the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified winner $1,066. The main event will be 38 laps, pays a minimum of $146 to start and is a qualifying event for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Dirt Works Eastern Region, Allstar Performance State and local track points will be awarded. There is no entry fee. Pit gates at Auburn open at 5 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m., hot laps are at 6 p.m., with Break The Track Record to follow. Deery Series, IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour at West Liberty for June 14 twinbill

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (June 10) – The Deery Brothers Summer Series and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour pack another 1-2 Tuesday night punch, this time on June 14 at West Liberty Raceway. While the IMCA Late Model tour has made 13 previous visits to West Liberty, most recently when the 30th annual series opened on April 9, next Tuesday’s event marks the first-ever visit there by the tour for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. The Deery feature pays $2,000 to win and minimum $300 to start while the Dirt Tour pays $1,000 to win and a minimum of $150 to take the main event green. IMCA Mid-Iowa Topless 50 plays out June 14 at Hamilton County Speedway

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa – Both Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods shed their roofs for the Tuesday, June 14 Mid-Iowa Topless 50 at Hamilton County Speedway. Modifieds race for $2,000 to win their Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier while Northern SportMods chase a top check of $1,000. Thirty cars will start each main event. Tow money is $100 for Modifieds and $65 for the SportMods. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded in both divisions, as will BMS North Central Region points for the Modifieds. Forecast promising for Sunday show at Seymour

SEYMOUR, Wis. – Seymour Raceway Park is getting set to host a full night of racing on the 1/3-mile banked clay oval on Sunday June 12. A very positive forecast promises the best weather conditions of the season, which has seen three out of four events rained out. The three regular weekly divisions, Coors Light IMCA Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Street Stocks will be joined by the INEX Dirt Legends cars, making their second appearance of the season.
