Lee County Drive For 5 schedule adjusted

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that took all of April’s and most of May’s scheduled race events at Pepsi Lee County Speedway, promoters Brian and Marcie Gaylord have announced several schedule changes to the Drive For 5 program for IMCA Sunoco Late Models. There will still be five $1,000 to win feature qualifying nights to help set the stage for a potential $5,000 IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 payday in mid September at the track. Four of the qualifying nights will take place on weekly Friday night events, on June 12, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 21, with one qualifying night on Saturday, Aug. 1. Drivers who compete in at least four of those events will be eligible to run for a top prize of $5,000 in the Saturday, Sept. 12 finale. Season opener with fans at Benton County Speedway Sunday, June 7

By Jerry Mackey VINTON, Iowa – The 2020 point racing season will take the green flag this Sunday, June 7 at the Benton County Speedway, The Bullring. Under the direction of the Dripps family, the Speedway located on the Benton County Fairgrounds has undergone many improvements and upgrades. The track is in excellent condition and with all the time and effort put into enhancing the surface, the track is going to be very conducive to extremely exciting racing. Sunday night’s racing under the IMCA sanction will see racing in the IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock divisions. “We are really excited to welcome the fans to The Bullring this Sunday,” stated Rick Dripps, “Our goal is to provide an exciting, fast-paced show that will be run in a timely fashion “ On Sunday, the warmup session will get underway at 4:30 p.m. with the first race scheduled to go green at 5 p.m.

Four IMCA divisions race Saturday at Bethany Speedway

By Chet Querry BETHANY, Mo. – Bethany Speedway returns to action on June 6 with a full night of racing at the Northwest Missouri State Fairgrounds. The Saturday program features IMCA Modifieds, IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods. Opening night of the 2020 season saw records broken with total of 128 cars and drivers traveling from as far away as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Arkansas and Arizona to race on the smooth, fast and always competitive Bethany oval. There are a lot of local names bringing cars to race and more cars being built. Lap after lap of the best side-by-side racing action is at Bethany Speedway.

Thomas County Speedway gears up for busy June

COLBY, Kan. – Thomas County Speedway will host its season opener this Friday, June 5 at the 3/8-mile speedplant. In action will be IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. with grandstands opening at 6:30 p.m. General admission tickets cost $10 for adults with children ages 12 and under admitted free when accompanying a paid adult. Racing action continues on Friday, June 12 with the same divisions and start times, before leading into a big doubleheader weekend June 26 and 27. The Friday night, June 26 card will again see sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods and Sport Compacts in action. The Saturday, June 27 card changes pace and welcomes the United Rebel Sprint Series as part of a one-of-a-kind show that’s never been seen before at Thomas County Speedway. Wilson tops stout Boyd field for Texas Sprint Series win

BOYD, Texas (May 29) – The higher line took Chad Wilson to the front of the Texas Sprint Series feature field Friday at Boyd Raceway. The lower line kept him there. Wilson started the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car 20-lapper from ninth, found a line to his liking higher up on the oval and passed Brandon Howle for the lead before midway. He moved to lower grooves from that point and won ahead of Lucas Scherb and Logan Scherb. Zane Lawrence and Jeb Sessums completed the top five. Thirty-six cars vied in the second TSS show of the season. “It was a stout field for sure and definitely one of the most fun races I’ve been in,” Wilson said following his first win of 2020. Paris, Zevenbergen prevail on Dirt Duel Night 1

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (June 1) – Shane Paris and Elijah Zevenbergen prevailed in their respective qualifying features on opening night of Stuart Speedway’s Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel. Qualifying for Wednesday’s 50-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature was set by four heats and two “B” features. Paris and Dylan VanWyk put on a show through lapped traffic until a caution bunched everyone up with just a handful of laps left, and it was Paris pulling away to the comfortable win. Cody Thompson finished second with VanWyk third and Carter VanDenBerg fourth. Those four drivers will make up the inside of the front four rows for the main event on Wednesday. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars followed the same exact format as the SportMods and this was a barnburner with Jake Masters setting the pace early. IMCA adapts point structure, track title bonuses to unique 2020 race season

VINTON, Iowa – IMCA will respond to the challenges of a unique race season with one-year adaptations to national and regional point structures, as well as the awarding of track championship bonus points. National standings for all eight IMCA divisions, as well as regional Modified, Stock Car and Hobby Stock standings will be based on drivers’ best 20 finishes out of their first 40 home region starts. Championships earned at tracks scheduling and holding a minimum of six weekly events will be worth as many as 15 bonus points; bonus points will be pro-rated at tracks holding four or five of six scheduled events. “The changes we are making for the current point season were made necessary by the pandemic and cancellation of approximately two months of racing,” explained IMCA President Brett Root. “These changes are in the best interest of our members and sanctioned tracks.” “We have no intention of reducing national or regional point funds, or the contingency award programs in place at this time,” he continued. Nelson repeats in Hobby Stocks, Sauerman, Schmidt, Sachau also post Boone wins

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (May 30) – Boone Speedway saw another big car count for its Saturday night racing program with 199 race cars checked into the pits and Dylan Nelson repeated his win from last week in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock division. The Hobby Stocks ended the night’s racing with their 15-lap feature event. Braden Richards led the troops in the early going of the race but Nelson was quickly up to challenge him by lap three. By lap five, Nelson had taken over the top spot and was successful in warding off Richards the rest of the way to the checkers. Richards held the second spot, Eric Knutson came from 11th starting to take third place, fourth was Solomon Bennett, and Shane Butler completed the top five. Cory Sauerman took home the victory in the IMCA Modified contest and it was 12th starting Jay Schmidt making a last-lap pass for the win in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division. Elston tops IMCA Late Model opener at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 29) – Opening night IMCA Sunoco Late Model honors belonged to Tommy Elston Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Ron Boyse and Elston led the field to green, with Boyse edging out Elston by a nose at the line to lead the first of 20 laps. But Elston used the momentum off the top of the track to grab the lead away from Boyse on lap two. Denny Woodworth, who started fifth, slipped past Boyse on lap three to take over the runner-up spot and from there Woodworth tried to stay in Elston’s tire tracks.
