100th career IMCA Modified win is latest achievement for Dylan Smith

OSCEOLA, Neb. (May 8) – A driver who’s enjoyed his share of success and then some added another accomplishment to his IMCA resume Friday night. Dylan Smith won his 100th career IMCA Modified feature on May 8 at Boone County Raceway, his latest in a long line of achievements that also includes national and IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s championships. “There was definitely a little pressure. Jake Anson definitely didn’t let me win,” Smith said. “I’ve won a track championship at Albion and we have a lot of friends here. It was nice to be able to celebrate with them afterwards.” From Osceola, Smith followed older brother Damian into the division, a favorite with both his parents and grandparents, and won for the first time in 2006. Mother Nature wins again at Salina Speedway

By Dusty Wiegert SALINA, Kan. — A soaking rain shower Friday morning leaves Salina Speedway silent again on Friday, May 15. As of late Thursday evening, after more than an inch of rain the previous night, the pits and infield had begun to dry and things looked hopeful for racing to return after a two-week, weather-related hiatus. That all changed Friday morning when a developing system moved in and dumped a large amount of rain on the speedway in a short amount of time. With an ever-changing forecast and more cloud cover there would not be enough time to dry things out, so racing will have to wait another week. Next Friday, May 22 will feature the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Late Models, 1st Class Chassis IMCA Modifieds, Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Northern SportMods, Auto House Mod Lites, and Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks. The night will again be sponsored by Will Electric and Glass Masters.

Idaho Falls re-opens with inaugural Dirt Wars special

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – Idaho Falls Raceway roars back to life with the inaugural Dirt Wars special on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified features both nights pay $1,000 to win and are Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying events. Top prize in the IMCA SportMod features is $750. All applicable IMCA will be awarded each evening. Pit gates open at noon and the grandstand opens at 3 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m. both days. Grandstand admission for the weekend is $12 for adults, $5 for kids and free for three and under. Modified entry fee is $50 each night and pit passes are $15. Racing action will alternate with a truck pull, to be held behind the adjoining go-kart track. Hopkins starts last, finishes first in Bay Area Tour feature at Flomaton

FLOMATON, Ala. (May 9) – Greg Hopkins raced all the way from last starting to first at the finish of Saturday’s Bay Area Emerald Coast Tour main event at Flomaton Speedway. The victory was Hopkins series first and IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified career 36th. Jessie Barnhill shook off the recent bad luck he’s endured and followed his heat race win – ahead of brother Jason Barnhill – with a strong run to second place in the feature. Justin Galbreath, winner of the two previous tour events, was third. Joey Bartlett and Chris Bayhi completed the top five. Twenty-one different drivers have now purchased licenses to compete in the inaugural Bay Area Modified Tour. Duke drives to Pennsylvania Sprint Series win at Susquehanna

NEWBERRYTOWN, Pa. (May 9) – It was an exciting race on Saturday night with extra special significance on the eve of Mother’s Day. Ken Duke picked up the Pennsylvania Sprint Series win at Susquehanna Speedway Park for what to date is most significant victory in what is sure to be many future checkered flag runs. “That was the kid who used to race cars in the dirt in front of the grandstands,” proud father Ken Duke Sr. said after the race. Duke’s mother was also on hand as usual for a special Mother’s day trip to victory lane. Virginia Sprint Series checkers fly for Linkenhoker

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (May 9) – Anthony Linkenhoker used his smooth style to move up front and take his career first Virginia Sprint Series win Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway. The third different winner in as many IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver tour events this season, Linkenhoker took the landmark checkers ahead of Chris Ware and Charlie Ware. Chris Ware and Bill Rice paced the field to green with Ware out first by a nose but Rice came back to lead the lap as problems hit in turn one. Brian Lawson pushed up in to Tom Humphries, blocking the track and taking French Grimes with them. On the restart, Rice lead with Ware in second as Linkenhoker followed. Linkenhoker went around Ware and was off after Rice. On lap 10, Linkenhoker went under Rice and to the lead where he stayed for his first win at Shenandoah as Ware stayed close. Legit Speedway opens Saturday, IMCA Modifieds return to West Plains

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (May 7) – A former track champion is the new owner and promoter at newly re-named Legit Speedway. Gary Stolba completed his purchase of the 3/8-mile dirt facility this spring. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports headline weekly programs at West Plains beginning this Saturday, May 9. “The track is ready and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the rain stays away,” Stolba said. “We started working on the facility six weeks ago and are putting final touches on concessions and restrooms. We’re also working on getting a new tailgating area finished.” Stolba was a 21-year-old spectator for the first event held at the former West Plains Motor Speedway. He was the Modified track champion there in 2010, the 18th consecutive and most recent year the division was sanctioned by IMCA. “We had 30-35 IMCA Modfieds every night when this track was sanctioned before,” Stolba said. “Cost was the reason why. California’s Diamond Mountain Speedway sets 10 dates for IMCA Modifieds

SUSANVILLE, Calif. – IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds return to California’s Diamond Mountain Speedway for nine Saturday dates and another on Friday this season. The ¼-mile dirt oval is located on the Lassen County Fairgrounds and is the newest addition to IMCA’s Larry Shaw Racing Western Region. “There are other tracks in the area that are IMCA sanctioned,” noted Fair Manager Jim Wolcott. “Drivers at those tracks will be able to come here and race for points, too.” Opening night is this Saturday, May 9. Other Saturday shows are scheduled May 23, May 30, June 13, July 4, July 18, Aug. 1, Aug. 22 and season championship night on Sept. 5. The county fair race is July 18; the one Friday event is on June 19. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional, Allstar Performance State and local track points will be awarded each night. IMCA track champions were crowned at the former High Desert Speedway in 1995 and 1996. Most recently, Susanville was the site of three sanctioned events in 2013.

Woods returns to Abilene for Sprint Series of Texas feature win

ABILENE, Texas (May 2) – Dustin Woods earned his Sprint Series of Texas career first feature at Abilene Speedway last May. He earned his second when the tour for IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Cars returned Saturday night. Benefitting from changing track conditions and Reagan Reed’s ailing motor late in the contest, Woods finally gained the lead on the last of 20 laps. He’d fallen back a couple spots after starting ninth, then steadily advanced into contention. Two restarts during the last five laps preceded his move to the outside around Reed. “I was able to work the bottom of the track to my favor,” said Woods. “I was looking forward to racing with Reagan for the win but she had motor problems.” Kenny Elwood, Danny Merrell and Rodney Henderson were second through fourth, respectively.
