Luellen, Lamberies lead the way in SportMod qualifiers

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – Clint Luellen and Lucas Lamberies earned front row starting spots in the Northern SportMod main event, with IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s qualifying feature wins Tuesday night. Luellen ran in front the final 19 of 25 circuits in the opener, pulling away from eventual runner-up Chad Shaw following three restarts over the last nine laps of the first qualifier. Lamberies won from the pole in the second qualifier, which opened with 15 green flag laps. That first caution erased Lamberies’ big lead. He crossed the stripe in front of Nate Meyer in a green, white, checkered finish. Lining up behind Luellen and Shaw in the middle row Saturday evening will be fellow top eight finishers Arie Schouten, 2014 runner-up Randy Roberts, 19th starting Brayton Carter, Jerry Hinton, 22nd starting Tory Mack and 21st starting Tyler Soppe. Coopman exorcizes Super Nationals demons with Sport Compact crown

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – Those September demons got put to rest Tuesday evening. Nate Coopman shook off the bad luck that had ridden with him in previous visits to Boone Speedway, winning the Sport Compact main event and becoming the first champion crowned at the 33rd annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. “I’ve been trying to win this race for four years and had nothing but bad luck,” said Coopman, who broke while leading late in last year’s event and had to be wondering if he’d be snakebit again after making early contact with the front stretch wall. “This has to be my biggest win, for sure.” His latest of nearly 200 sanctioned victories paid $250, plus a $230 Speedway Motors Weekly Racing bonus based on 46 starts this season coming into the night. No stranger to Boone

Tom Charles is no stranger to Boone Speedway but this is the first year he’s brought a teammate to Super Nationals. The Modified hotshoe from Basehor, Kan., is accompanied by 18-year-old grandson Austin, who made his Super Nationals debut in a SportMod on Monday. “Austin has been wanting to come to Boone all year,” said Charles, who owns 90-plus Modified wins in his IMCA career and doubles as his grandson’s crew chief. “The kid is in heaven.” Third in the points this season at Thunder Hill Speedway, Austin was born deaf and has a cochlear implant. He said his other senses kick in to make up for his inability to hear on the track. Having Tom Charles as a crew chief/grandfather doesn’t hurt, either. “I’ve learned a lot from him. Rick Ringgenberg is going out on top at the 2015 Super Nationals.

While he plans to get a street rod or cruiser to keep his foot in the racing door, the veteran from Kelley calls it a career this September. He’ll take the green flag in the 15th of 20 Northern SportMod heats this evening. “I’ve got all the wrenches, I might as well keep wrenching,” Ringgenberg said. “It’s been a long haul, 25 years. Record 64 Sport Compacts contend on day two of Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – The first car count record of the 33rd annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s comes courtesy of the Sport Compact division. Sixty-four Sport Compacts see action Tuesday at Boone Speedway. That’s one more than the previous record set two years ago. Sport Compact entries come from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas and Wisconsin. * Also on the schedule for day two of Super Nationals is race of champions qualifying for Northern SportMods and Hobby Stocks, two SportMod qualifying features and a single Hobby Stock qualifier. With the addition of a late SportMod entry on Monday, the overall car count for the first two days of Super Nationals is at 372. *

Prauner paces Super Nationals SportMod qualifier

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Kyle Prauner will start from the pole in Saturday’s main event for Northern SportMods at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Prauner drove high around defending champion Johnathon Logue on the 20th of 25 laps in winning the coveted starting position in Monday’s opening night qualifying feature at Boone Speedway. Tony Olson passed Logue for second; a late caution erased Logue’s bid to regain the lead and he chased Prauner and Olson the last three times around the oval. Completing the top eight finishers and the rest of the inside row were Matthew Looft, Jared VanDeest, Nelson Vollbrecht, Jacob Krone and Sam Wieben. Logue restarted inside row one following a caution on the initial start. The race was red-flagged after Brandon Williams got into the wall and rolled on the backstretch on lap 21. Pruitt, Watson are opening night Hobby Stock heroes at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Mike Pruitt and John Watson punched their tickets to front row starting spots in Saturday’s Hobby Stock main event, with qualifying feature wins on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Pruitt, the 2009 Northern SportMods champion, raced from 12th starting to win the first qualifier and earn the pole start in the big dance at Boone Speedway. He caught race-long leader Adam Armstrong on the 21st of 25 laps and took the checkers ahead of Myles Michehl. Watson took over the front spot just before midway in the second qualifier and held off Eric Stanton the last half of the contest. He’ll start in the middle of the front row on Saturday. Last year’s runner-up, Pruitt started sixth and reined in Nathan Ballard before catching Armstrong, who rolled in the first set of turn to bring a stop to the first qualifier with three laps to go.
