Lion’s share of Hobby Stock Spring Nationals purse stays close to home with win by Nielsen

SPENCER, Iowa (May 17) – The Tuesday night crowd at Clay County Fairgrounds got to cheer on one of their own as the evening’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock Spring Nationals main event wound down. Cody Nielsen started fourth and led every time around the oval in the 20-lap, $2,000 to win headliner. “I went up to the top side. Up top was the faster line for me,” he said. “It was fun to win a big show like that in front of the hometown crowd.” “It was good to keep the money local,” added Nielsen, who counts events sponsors Spencer Office Supplies and H & N Chevrolet Buick – also his employer – among the sponsors for his own race program. Jason Kohl had his hands full before solidifying his second-place spot but ran out of laps in his bid to catch up with Nielsen. Cory Probst, Malik Sampson and Rusty Montagne completed the top five. Nielsen’s win was his fifth this season and first at Spencer. Matt Morrow won for the first time [Read More]

“A pretty good week” continues for Carter at Central Iowa IMCA Stock Car Showdown

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (May 17) – It might be tough to find a driver who’s had a better start to his racing week than Cayden Carter. The runner-up in Sunday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Quad City Speedway, Carter rocketed from 12th starting to win the Central Iowa IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Showdown and $2,000 at Hamilton County Speedway Tuesday night. Todd Inman, Kevin Opheim, Dan Mackenthun and Jay Schmidt were scored next in an all-star filled field. Carter made the most of the higher line and passed pole starter Derek Green for the lead before midway. He beat Inman to the checkers by all of a car length following a late yellow. “Back in my SportMod days, there were times when we won six or seven races in a row, but this was definitely a good week,” Carter said. “After finishing second in the Deery race on Sunday and tonight, it has already been a pretty good week for us.” Carter now has four wins and a second-place finish in five starts in [Read More]

Callahan cashes in at Quad City Deery

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 15) – What looked to be another night for a Deery Brothers Summer Series rookie to shine ended with veteran Joel Callahan in victory lane instead Sunday at Quad City Speedway. First-year IMCA Late Model tour driver Cayden Carter led the first 32 times around the East Moline oval before Callahan caught up and led to the $2,000 checkers. Carter ended in second while Tyler Droste, the winner at Quad City last July and 2015 series rookie of the year, took third. “We can usually run the low side when we need to and it worked well for us tonight,” Callahan said following his career fourth series victory, and first away from Farley Speedway. “There were a couple times at midway when I got alongside but couldn’t get past. I had the advantage of running second but he (Carter) was tough.” Carter had started outside the front row and set sail from the top side. Callahan drew the fifth starting spot and stayed glued to the bottom. The last 39 laps [Read More]

VanMil, Laudenschlager strike gold at Red River Valley Speedway

By Mike Spieker WEST FARGO, N.D. (May 13) – After nearly four long years, Red River Valley Speedway was resurrected Friday night to the delight of hundreds of dedicated race fans, who braved wind chills that approached 30 degrees. A stout field of 70 race teams were signed in to inaugurate a new era of racing at “The fastest track in the Upper Midwest” and winners of inaugural features for the sanctioned divisions were Rob VanMil in the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and Erik Laudenschlager in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Coming into the night everybody was asking, “Can anybody stop Rob VanMil?” The 2015 IMCA Modified national rookie of the year had picked up a convincing win the previous Sunday at Buffalo River Race Park and backed it up with a win Thursday at Norman County Raceway where he took the checkers with an advantage of 11.5 seconds. If VanMil was going to make it three in a row, he had a long way to go as he was mired back in the 10th starting position for the 25-lap [Read More]

Twin 20 triumphs for Linkenhoker, Worrell in Virginia Sprint Series Shenandoah show

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (May 14) – A rain delay on April 30 after the trophy dash meant a changeup format was put into play when Virginia Sprint Series drivers returned to Shenandoah Speedway Saturday night for a pair of twin 20-lap features. Anthony Linkenhoker became the first repeat winner for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars this season in the rescheduled race, Glenn Worrell earned his first pavement win in the nightcap and Bill Rice went home with two runner-up finishes. The first feature had Worrell and Tony Harris on the front row with Harris out first. Rice was strong up high right behind them and got Worrell first and then Harris on lap six, but Linkenhoker was coming on strong as well. Linkenhoker was in second by lap 10 and in the lead for good two laps later. Worrell was pressing Rice as laps ran out. Feature number two had Worrell and Harris on the point as the green waved with Worrell out front on the bottom and Harris mid-track. The two traded [Read More]
