Noll, Miller sweep John Morris Classic IMCA features

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (May 28-29) – Jason Noll and Trevor Miller both went 2-for-2 at Arizona Speedway’s Memorial Weekend John Morris Classic. Noll picked up both $1,000 to win Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified features while Miller swept the $600 to win Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main events. Noll raced from 10th starting to win Saturday’s caution-free 20-lapper and earn a spot on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I had a pretty good car. We could go to the bottom to pass and then go back to the top,” said Noll, who worked his way past leader and eventual runner-up Mike Strobl seven circuits in. “We got into lapped traffic but had a pretty sizable lead so that wasn’t a factor.” Jeremy Thornton, Steven McCollough and Joey Moriarty completed the top five across the stripe. Win number two on season and on the weekend saw Noll draw the outside pole and lead every time around the track on Sunday, as well as dodge the spinning car that brought out the first of bang-bang-bang [Read More]

Burke, Hogge split Santa Maria Spring Nationals features

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (May 28-29) – Their 2-1/2 hour holiday weekend trips south on Highway 101 saw Salinas drivers Cody Burke and Bobby Hogge IV in victory lane at Santa Maria Raceway. Burke topped the Saturday Budweiser Spring Nationals main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds while Hogge paced the Sunday show. Both events paid $1,000 to win. The opening night checkers were the first of 2016 for Burke, who hoped the victory would help jump start an otherwise challenging early season, while Hogge scored IMCA win number seven on the year. After drawing the outside pole start on Saturday, Burke made the most of the lower line and led all 25 laps. He was catching up with the back of the field when the only caution of the contest waved on lap 17, then pulled away from Randy Brown following the restart. “I’d never won this race before. I think my best finishes were fourth and fifth last year,” said Burke, new to the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, “and I wasn’t sure [Read More]

Hard charger Wauge pockets $1,500 for Haudenshild Tribute win

By Don Martin II WHITE CITY, Ore. (May 28) – With a $1,500 top prize and a berth on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational on the line, Mark Wauge impressed with his charge to the front of the pack for the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory at Southern Oregon Speedway’s Roger Haudenshild Tribute Race. Wauge started in the last row in a 30-lapper that ran with just one caution flag and a complete restart. He took the lead from long tow Darrell Hughes II on lap 20.  Once in front, Wauge was not to be denied as he pulled away for the win. After a multi-car crash resulted in a complete restart, Brian Poppa shot into the lead on the opening lap. What proved to be the last caution of the contest flew on the next circuit. Hughes pressured Poppa hard for the lead before using an inside pass on lap five to gain the lead. Wauge was already sixth by then and raced his way into the top four two laps later. [Read More]

Rust races from ‘B’ feature to Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers

VINTON, Iowa (May 30) – Once he made the Memorial Day main event, Joel Rust figured he had the car to be a contender. He figured right. Rust qualified for Monday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener at Benton County Speedway by running second in his “B” feature, started 16th in the field of 28 and promptly raced to his career-first Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Series victory. Rust passed fellow “B” qualifier Todd Shute with 13 circuits left in the 40-lapper and led to the $1,000 checkers. “I haven’t run a lot of features that long. I knew my car was good on the bottom and I got to fifth by midway,” the new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier said. “I’d had success here in a SportMod but last night was the first night here with this car. It was cool to be able to win this race especially with the caliber of cars.” Forty-eight Modifieds, the most-ever for an HDT event at Vinton, were on hand for the holiday show.  Shute, Tony Snyder, Chris Abelson [Read More]
