Kay gets first IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour win at Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 21) – Justin Kay has got his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified figured out.

Just ask the rest of the main event field in Thursday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Knoxville Raceway.

Kay, best known for his Late Model success, led all but one lap in winning the Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel special. The victory was Kay’s tour career first and third in the sanctioned division this season, and paid $1,500.

“It was fun. We unloaded the car and it was great, and that track is so big and fast,” said Kay, who’d had limited success in three previous Late Model starts at Knoxville. “It was really cool to win there, especially since it was my first Hawkeye Dirt Tour win and because of the relationship we have with Dynamic Drivelines. We were one of their very first customers.”

Forty-four Modifieds and 52 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods saw action on a muggy night at Knoxville. Curtis VanDerWal topped the $1,000 to win SportMod feature.

Kay started from the pole and had the field covered from the start. He caught up with the back of the back just after midway in the 25-lapper and was most of a straightaway ahead before the caution flag came out with six circuits left.

That was the opportunity the 10th starting Chris Abelson was looking for. He took over up front on lap 21, but saw Kay speed by on the next circuit and pull away to the finish.

Abelson settled for runner-up honors. Jacob Murray ran in second most of the night and ended in third while Kelly Shryock and Richie Gustin rounded out the top five. Kay’s win put him on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

VanDerWal led the last six times around the track in winning a Northern SportMod feature slowed by just a single caution.

Brett Lowry and then Tim Plummer showed the way before the eighth starting VanDerWal worked his way to the front.

Plummer, Lowry, Jarrett Brown and Matt VanGelder completed the top five.
