Late heroics pay off for Irvine in Kossuth County Hawkeye Dirt Tour

ALGONA, Iowa (June 9) – He didn’t lead the most laps, just the most important ones. Brian Irvine caught up with race-long leader Corey Dripps in lapped traffic, took away the front spot with a deft move to the inside on the 29th of 30 circuits and drove to the $1,000 checkers in Thursday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour main event at Kossuth County Speedway. Traffic remained a factor as the evening’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified headline event ran green to checkered. “Once I got to Corey, I saw a line of lapped cars ahead of him and knew I’d have to make an angle. Rust looks for record third straight Hawkeye Dirt Tour win tonight at Kossuth County

ALGONA, Iowa (June 9) – Joel Rust looks to make Hawkeye Dirt Tour history tonight, when the series for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds travels to Kossuth County Speedway. Rust has won the first two tour events, on Memorial Day at Benton County Speedway and Tuesday at Marshalltown Speedway. A win at Algona would make him the first driver to win three straight events in the series’ 64-race history. “I’ve been to Algona once before, in a SportMod about five years ago,” the Grundy Center charger said this afternoon. “I’m anxious to get back there. It looks like a good place to race.” Tonight’s feature pays $1,000 to win, a minimum of $150 to start and is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying event. Guss dominates Deery feature at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 7) – It’s been a few years since the last time he won an IMCA Late Model series race there, but Ray Guss Jr. put on a Deery Brothers Summer Series clinic Tuesday night at Marshalltown Speedway. Guss started outside Joel Callahan on the front row, took the lead on the second circuit and ran the rest of the 50-lapper without serious challenge. The $2,000 victory was the series career 31st for Guss, also the Deery winner at Marshalltown in 1989 and 2009. His latest checkers came ahead of Tyler Droste, Ryan Dolan, Callahan and Cayden Carter. “We were pretty decent in the heat race. We only made a few adjustments to make the car turn better,” said Guss. “Once we did that, it worked. Rust makes momentum work for Marshalltown Hawkeye Dirt Tour win

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 7) – After he went back to what he knew, Joel Rust went back to victory lane following a second straight Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature. Rust became a rare repeat winner in the series for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, following up his Memorial Day victory at Benton County Speedway with the $1,000 checkers Tuesday night at Marshalltown Speedway. He became just the second driver in the series’ 63-race history to win back-to-back features and accomplished the feat at his home track by less than a car length over Brian Irvine. “We had run ninth in the weekly show Friday at Marshalltown. Noll, Miller sweep John Morris Classic IMCA features

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (May 28-29) – Jason Noll and Trevor Miller both went 2-for-2 at Arizona Speedway’s Memorial Weekend John Morris Classic. Noll picked up both $1,000 to win Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified features while Miller swept the $600 to win Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main events. Noll raced from 10th starting to win Saturday’s caution-free 20-lapper and earn a spot on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I had a pretty good car. We could go to the bottom to pass and then go back to the top,” said Noll, who worked his way past leader and eventual runner-up Mike Strobl seven circuits in. “We got into lapped traffic but had a pretty sizable lead so that wasn’t a factor.” Jeremy Thornton, Steven McCollough and Joey Moriarty completed the top five across the stripe. Burke, Hogge split Santa Maria Spring Nationals features

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (May 28-29) – Their 2-1/2 hour holiday weekend trips south on Highway 101 saw Salinas drivers Cody Burke and Bobby Hogge IV in victory lane at Santa Maria Raceway. Burke topped the Saturday Budweiser Spring Nationals main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds while Hogge paced the Sunday show. Both events paid $1,000 to win. The opening night checkers were the first of 2016 for Burke, who hoped the victory would help jump start an otherwise challenging early season, while Hogge scored IMCA win number seven on the year. After drawing the outside pole start on Saturday, Burke made the most of the lower line and led all 25 laps. Lawson leads the way in Virginia Sprint Series feature at Natural Bridge

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (May 28) – Brian Lawson won for the first time this season when the Virginia Sprint Series made its second visit of 2016 to Natural Bridge Speedway. After recording his first IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car tour heat win, J.D. Coats joined Bill Rice in pacing the Saturday evening field to the feature green. Rice took the early lead, riding his favorite high line. Daren Bolac was making ground up on Rice and on lap four he went to the front with Lawson close behind. Lawson got by Bolac for the top spot on lap nine and Jerald Harris got into the picture, running second at halfway. Reeser captures PASS win at Williams Grove

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (May 27) – Tyler Reeser rebounded from early-season engine troubles and returned to victory lane at Williams Grove Speedway Friday night after holding off Colby Dice for the Pennsylvania Sprint Series win. Donnie Hendershot led the first lap before Reeser took over following a close race back to the line. Reeser had just seen Colby Dice drive into second when the red flag appeared on the fourth lap for a second-turn flip by Zach Newlin. Dice challenged Reeser briefly when action resumed but Reeser was up to the challenge, opening up a near straightaway advantage at points to pick up the win. Dice rode home second followed by Jaremi Hanson, Ken Duke and John Martin. John Barnett was the Wee Bee Audio and Video Hard Charger in the event, finishing eighth after starting 22nd in the feature. Hard charger Wauge pockets $1,500 for Haudenshild Tribute win

(May 28) – With a $1,500 top prize and a berth on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational on the line, Mark Wauge impressed with his charge to the front of the pack for the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory at Southern Oregon Speedway’s Roger Haudenshild Tribute Race. Wauge started in the last row in a 30-lapper that ran with just one caution flag and a complete restart. He took the lead from long tow Darrell Hughes II on lap 20. Once in front, Wauge was not to be denied as he pulled away for the win. After a multi-car crash resulted in a complete restart, Brian Poppa shot into the lead on the opening lap. What proved to be the last caution of the contest flew on the next circuit. Hughes pressured Poppa hard for the lead before using an inside pass on lap five to gain the lead.
