James is 2-for-2 at Tri-State following Spooker feature win

POCOLA, Okla. (Oct. 15) – Jeff James’ second competitive trip to Tri-State Speedway resulted in a second big payday. James, winner of the Spring Kegger special at Pocola, led all 30 laps of Saturday’s $3,000 to win Spooker main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. “Isn’t that crazy? I won the spring one and the fall one. That’s $5,000 in two races,” said James. “It’s a long ways (a little over 450 miles from his home in Stanton, Iowa) but it’s a nice payday.” As a bonus, the win put James on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Jeff Taylor, Steve Holzkamper, Todd Van Eaton and William Gould rounded out the top five. James had won his qualifying feature on Friday night and started outside pole. Taylor, Holzkamper and Gould all challenged from the inside after early restarts but could not get past. He’d won the Kegger and the Friday qualifier running the lower line, but James followed the high side to the checkers in the main event. “I didn’t know [Read More]

Green earns redemption and $2,000 at Southern Challenge

By J.M. Hallas ABILENE, Texas (Oct. 15) – A long green flag run at Abilene Speedway’s Ryan Bard Memorial Southern Challenge ended with Kevin Green in victory lane. Green caught Monte Bolton late in the 25-lap main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and gained a bit of redemption along with his career-best payday in the division. “We’d been running second before hitting an infield tire at 85 Speedway’s Bryan Mize Memorial. We were fast at Ennis but ended up not finishing,” Green said, “so this was kind of redemption for me.” The $2,000 win put Green on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He’d raced a Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod at Abilene previously and drew the outside pole start for the weekend’s Modified main event. The one caution of the race came out before the first lap was scored as a five-car pileup brought out a quick red flag; Bolton took the lead on lap two but Green stayed close throughout. With five to go Green turned up the [Read More]

Bakersfield Budweiser Nationals IMCA Modified wins go to Dotson, Childress

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 7-8) – Ethan Dotson and Ricky Childress Jr. took different routes to $1,500 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified wins at Bakersfield Speedway’s Budweiser Nationals. Dotson started on the pole in Friday’s 40-lapper and led every lap, pulling away from Bobby Hogge IV and Robby Sawyer in the late going for the victory. Childress had to work his way up from 10th starting on Saturday. He was running third, just a couple car lengths off the pace when frontrunners Mike Johnson and Brad Pounds tangled late in the race. Their respective wins put both drivers on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Dotson and Hogge both moved from the lower line to the top side after seeing Sawyer use that line to advance in the opening night show. “There were a couple cautions that took out the lapped traffic so that worked in my favor,” Dotson said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better night to get my first win of the year here.” Pounds and Logan Drake completed the top [Read More]

Hogge sails to IMCA Modified sweep at Ocean’s Pat Pettit Memorial special

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) – Bobby Hogge IV found himself riding with an uneasy feeling of déjà vu late in the Pat Pettit Memorial main event at Ocean Speedway. But after working his way through lapped traffic, Hogge backed up his $1,003 Friday night win at Watsonville with the $3,003 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event checkers on Saturday. “Last year I had about a half a lap lead before a late restart and Alex Stanford passed me,” he said. “This year I started 11th, got to the lead and was able to get through lapped traffic. After that it was smooth sailing.” Hogge ran three-wide with front-row starters Stanford and Nick DeCarlo for the lead, catching Stanford first and then driving past DeCarlo two laps later. Stanford, DeCarlo, Cody Burke and Robby Sawyer completed the top five in the 33-lapper. Ryan McDaniel, Kellen Chadwick, Ethan Dotson and Stanford were second through fifth, respectively, in the Friday show, also 33 laps. Eastern Region contenders Ward, Cole split wins at Outlaw’s IMCA Fall Nationals

DUNDEE, N.Y. (Sept. 23-24) – The top two drivers in the Dirt Works Eastern Region were both winners at Outlaw Speedway’s season-ending Fall Nationals. A.J. Ward made another long tow from Michigan to win the Friday opener and $1,000 at Dundee. Matt Cole topped the Saturday show, which doubled as an Atomicwraps.com Empire State Series event, and $1,500. Their victories put both drivers on the ballot for next September’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Ward won for the third time in as many New York starts on Friday. He took the green flag outside Jake Maynard on the front row and led all 25 laps on a track he found challenging due to its configuration. He was leading by close to a straightaway before a lap nine yellow; further cautions kept lapped traffic from becoming a factor and Ward stuck to the middle to higher line, getting the win ahead of Cole, Beau Ballard, Keith Lamphere and Tim Sebring. “I just tried to stay smooth and hit my marks, and was able to pull away,” Ward said following [Read More]

Alex Stanford was second and Ryan McDaniel ended in third. “This was the first time I’d even seen the track,” said Hogge, who drew the pole start. “I ran the lower line and Alex and Ryan were pretty close behind.” “When I got to lapped traffic, I just made sure I knew where they were going,” he added. “I figured with those two behind me, I didn’t have a lot of room to make any mistakes.” Second place paid $2,000 and third paid $1,000.
