Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Marolf is the main man in Deery Series opener at 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 1) – Nick Marolf will have much memories of his second visit to 34 Raceway than he will of his first. Marolf passed Darrel DeFrance and led the last 30 times around the track in winning Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series opener at West Burlington, earning $2,000 for his IMCA Late Model tour efforts. His one previous outing at 34 came at the Pepsi USA Nationals 17 years ago when his drive shaft broke during hot laps. “That was early in my career and we were just trying to make laps. That night was forgetful. I’d like to not remember it at all,” Marolf said. “We got lucky tonight with the redraw and got to start close to the front (third). I ran with Jay Johnson and then was able to pass Darrel in (turns) three and four for the lead.” While drivers swapped positions behind him, no one could find a way past Marolf before the checkers flew. DeFrance, competing in his 468th consecutive series event, ended as the runner-up and [Read More]

Marshalltown postpones IMCA World Nationals

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (March 29) – Due to already wet track conditions, impending steady heavy rains today and colder temperatures not allowing for any track drying, Marshalltown Speedway officials have announced postponement of this weekend’s IMCA World Nationals special. “We feel it is best to postpone the World Nationals as conditions will not allow us to prep the track to the standards for which we are known,” explained Promoter Toby Kruse. “With that said, the World Nationals will be held Oct. 12-14.” “It’s a downer because there was so much interest in this event,” he added. “These are always tough decisions but they are made with the best interest of the racers, crews and fans in mind.” Plans are for the format to remain the same on the postponed date: IMCA Modifieds race for $10,000 to win and a minimum of $500 to start their 2018 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. Two $1,000 to win features are slated for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods with a pair of $500 to win [Read More]

Bowers gasses up, sweeps Sunflower Classic Weekend

HAYS, Kan. (March 24-25) – The guy who ran out of gas on the way to the track for practice was the same IMCA Modified driver who ran away from everybody both nights of RPM Speedway’s Sunflower Classic. Steven Bowers Jr. topped $1,000 to win features Friday and Saturday at Hays and afterwards could laugh about the needle hitting empty on Thursday, half a mile from the gas station in Junction City. “I thought that night might have thrown a curve ball into the weekend. It was not a good way to start,” said Bowers, who made it to the pumps after friend who’d been waiting at the station delivered a can of gas. “But it turned out awesome. It was one of those deals where we would have been happy with a top five but came out with back-to-back wins.” The defending Kansas state champion and already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Bowers started sixth, passed Cody Gearhart for the lead on the second circuit and led to the finish of Friday’s [Read More]

Koch utilizes high side to capture Sprint Series of Oklahoma opener

By David Smith Jr. ARDMORE, Okla. (March 25) – The Sprint Series of Oklahoma IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series presented by Smiley’s Racing Products opened its 2017 race season Saturday night and when all said and done it was Chad Koch leading the final five laps to capture his first-ever victory with the series at Southern Oklahoma Speedway. This event was co-sanctioned with the Sprint Series of Texas IMCA Racesaver Sprint Series. The fourth starting Koch quickly moved into the runner-up position, utilizing the top of the oval while leader Jake Martens worked the bottom. The leader began approaching slower cars on lap 11. Martens built a full-stretch lead that was erased by the final caution of the night, on lap 13. Koch got a run around Martens to take the lead on the next circuit. From then on there was no stopping Koch as he led the rest of the way unchallenged to capture the victory aboard his home-built sprinter. “Man, what a night,” said an elated Koch. “We had ignition issues and didn’t [Read More]
