IMCA addresses wheel spacers, rear end components and weight

VINTON, Iowa – IMCA wheel spacer and rear end component rules have undergone a fine tuning. “Last week we clarified weight rules regarding axle tubes for Modifieds and Late Models,” explained IMCA President Brett Root. “We continue to field phone calls and are expanding that clarification to other rear end components and try to head off some of the unnecessary direction the market is taking.” Effective immediately, wheel spacers used in the Modified, Stock Car and Southern SportMod divisions must be aluminum with a maximum outside diameter of 7-1/4 inches. Late Models will only be allowed to compete with aluminum wheel spacers as well. Wheel spacers are not allowed in the Hobby Stock, Northern SportMod and Sport Compact divisions. “We are doing our best to avoid being walked into putting weight rules on suspension components,” Root said. “Executive Director of Competition Dave Brenn is doing an excellent job researching this issue and writing rules that racers can understand and inspectors can effectively enforce.” Additionally, rear end components including calipers, hubs, drive plates and axle tubes [Read More]

IMCA clarifies Modified, Late Model rear end weight rules

VINTON, Iowa – Weight rules for both IMCA Modified and IMCA Late Model divisions are not to be taken lightly. Rear end rules for the two divisions were clarified for the 2017 race season. The Modified rule specifies that a standard weight steel axle tube is allowed, the Late Model rule that standard weight aluminum or steel axle tubes only can be used in sanctioned competition. “This is a performance issue and one that is important for maintaining fairness,” noted IMCA President Brett Root. “By no means do we believe the disqualification of the defending champion at the Independence Deery Series event was a result of intentional cheating of this rule, but it must be enforced regardless of who the driver is or their previous success. That particular disqualification leads us to believe there remains confusion regarding IMCA’s position on this rule.” Quick change rear ends are available with three variations of axle tubes (light weight, standard weight and heavy weight) and IMCA uses these industry terms to define expectations for that component. “The wall [Read More]

Chevrolet Performance renews lucrative cash bonus program with IMCA through 2019

GRAND BLANC, Mich. – Chevrolet Performance has renewed a lucrative cash bonus program rewarding IMCA drivers and sanctioned tracks through the 2017-2019 race seasons. Drivers winning track championships while competing exclusively with 602 or 604 crate engines receive a $250 bonus. Tracks sanctioning any combination of the Modified, Hobby Stock and SportMod divisions and displaying Chevrolet Performance banners become eligible for cash bonuses of their own. “This is a program that paid cash back to our drivers and sanctioned tracks to the tune of $75,000 last year. It is easily our biggest cash bonus program for drivers,” emphasized IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder. “This is a big deal. A lot of money will get paid directly to drivers and tracks that support IMCA and Chevrolet Performance.” Driver bonuses will be paid after point standings become official; track bonuses will be paid throughout the season. The Chevrolet Performance IMCA crate engine bonus program originated in 2005 with cash awards to eligible Northern SportMod drivers finishing in the top five in track standings. It expanded to include [Read More]

Kay flexes Deery muscles again at Dubuque with $2,000 Sunday checkers

DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 23) – After the fifth lead change of the night, a driver who knows a thing or two about getting around Dubuque Speedway was the winner of Sunday night’s Deery Brothers Summer Series 50-lap feature. And a driver making his first-ever visit to Dubuque was a very close runner-up in the final installment of the weekend’s Highway 20 Triple Crown. Justin Kay led the last 11 circuits in winning the IMCA Late Model tour main event, picking up his second $2,000 check in three nights for his career 21st Deery victory. Nebraskan Jake Neal led nine laps before Kay got by but never gave up the chase, finishing just a car length back. Matt Ryan, Chad Holladay and Cayden Carter, the top driver in Triple Crown point standings, completed the top five. Joe Zrostlik led the first two laps from his outside front row start. Carter started seventh and led laps 3-20 and 22-29, with the eighth staring Kay scored first across the line on lap 21. Back-to-back cautions came out on laps [Read More]

Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Change of plans leads Gustin to first Deery Series victory

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (April 22) – Richie Gustin is glad he reconsidered his plans Saturday. After initially expecting to take the night off from racing, Gustin decided to make the trip to Independence Motor Speedway for the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models. By night’s end, he was standing in victory lane celebrating the first series win of his career. Gustin made his way past race-long leader Justin Mitchell with 11 laps to go in the 40-lapper to drive to the milestone victory. Pole-sitter Mitchell assumed command early with Gustin in tow. The leader reached slower traffic after just 10 laps with Gustin remaining in pursuit the entire time. Gustin stuck with him and was eventually able to work the low side past Mitchell exiting turn two on lap 29. He led the rest of the way to secure the $2,000 payday ahead of Mitchell. Travis Denning, Luke Goedert and Curt Martin completed the top five in the caution-free feature. Tyler Bruening crossed the line third, however his rearend axle housing failed post-race inspection.
