Montezuma County looks forward to solid car counts with return to IMCA

CORTEZ, Colo. – Kevin Faddis saw bigger grandstand numbers when he focused on promoting events at Montezuma County Fairgrounds Speedway last season. With the return of IMCA sanctioning, he’s confident of much better car count numbers in 2017. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA SportMods return to the 3/8-mile oval at Cortez this season with half a dozen Friday-Saturday doubleheaders on the initial schedule. All three divisions have a lengthy history at Montezuma County. The Modifieds and Stocks were last sanctioned in 2015, the SportMods in 2014. “Last year, we went USRA after Aztec Speedway (an hour and a half to the southwest in New Mexico) sanctioned with them and it killed our Modified class,” Faddis said. “Guys didn’t want to run the high-dollar stuff. Beatrice Spring Nationals moved forward one day

BEATRICE, Neb. (March 7) – Racing at the 24th annual IMCA Spring Nationals at Beatrice Speedway has been moved to Thursday and Friday, March 9 and 10. The open practice now runs from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, with the $500 to win Race of Champions for previous Modified winners at Spring Nationals set for 9:15 p.m. Hot laps will start at 5 p.m. with the first heat race at 6 p.m. both Thursday and Friday. Volatile weather forecasts are the reason for the change in schedule, promoter Toby Kruse said. The event will be broadcast live on Speed Shift TV. IMCA Modified features Thursday and Friday both pay $2,500 to win, a minimum of $250 to start and are Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying events. Tomlinson tops HOT’s Jack Bagby Memorial IMCA Modified main

WACO, Texas (March 3) – Prior to Friday night, Eric Tomlinson had never won an opening night feature. He ended that streak and earned $1,000 along with the IMCA Modified checkers in this year’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway lidlifter, adding his name to the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot with the Jack Bagby Memorial victory. “We’ve got one win in one race and we’re on the All-Star ballot. It’s a heck of a way to start the season,” Tomlinson said. “I’d never won on opening night and never imagined I’d win the Jack Bagby Memorial.” Tomlinson drew the pole start after finishing third in his heat and led all 20 laps. He kept William Gould and Chris Elliott at bay following a restart with two laps to go and beat Gould across the stripe by four car lengths. Jones kicks off 2017 campaign with IMCA RaceSaver Sprint win at KSP

KENNEDALE, Texas (Feb. 25-26) – The pace for the first half of Saturday’s IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature at Kennedale Speedway Park was to Kyle Jones’ liking, as he worked his way toward the front of the Spring Kick-Off field. Once he got in the lead, however, the laps didn’t seem to click off nearly as quickly. Baca earns redemption, takes IMCA Modified title at Desert Classic

(Feb. 24-25) – The 29th annual IMCA Desert Classic at Canyon Speedway Park is in the record book and Chaz Baca Jr. wrote his own chapter with the win in the 40-lap headliner for IMCA Modifieds. Baca powered his way from dead last in his heat race early in the night to victory lane in the $3,000 to win main event. “I’ve won at Canyon multiple times in a mod-lite but this is the first time in Modified,” Baca said following the top paying checkers of his career in the sanctioned class. “We had a caution with four to go and I was nervous because I knew Cody Laney was right behind me and Hunter Marriott was coming up quick.” After a post race tech violation had gotten Baca disqualified from his second finishing position in Friday qualifying, he started last in his heat race and 13th in the feature field. 2016 Sprint Series of Texas champion is new IMCA RaceSaver tour owner, director

GREENVILLE, Texas – Last year’s tour champion is the new owner and director of the Sprint Series of Texas. Jeff Day is in charge of an IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series that visits six tracks in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana in 2017. The first nine of 11 tour dates are scheduled during the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season. “I want to see this series thrive and continue the tradition of great Sprint Car racing in this area,” said Day. “We want to find more ways to get fans, especially the kids, involved and get more publicity for drivers following the series.” The Sprint Series of Texas takes its own command trailer and fire trucks to each event. Gould nears 100 IMCA Modified career wins with Ice Breaker sweep

ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 17-18) – William Gould had planned to crew for teammate Matt Guillaume at Abilene Speedway’s season-opening Ice Breaker. He borrowed an engine from Guillaume instead and raced to $700 IMCA Modified checkers Friday and Saturday night, upping his career win total in the division to 98. “Normally when I go to Abilene I run up front or I break,” Gould said. “The track was fast both nights and the preferred lane was on the bottom.” Gould started fourth on opening night and had the lead three circuits into the 20-lapper. CRSA announces 22 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint dates in New York, Pennsylvania

The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car tour has 22 race nights slated, and another three dates to be announced. The standard purse sees a minimum of $325 paid to win and $140 to start. National and New York or Pennsylvania state points will be awarded for CRSA events through Sept. 22. The first-ever Allstar Performance State Champion New York state champion will be crowned in the IMCA RaceSaver division this season. The traditional kick-off of the 2017 season will once again be at the New York State Fairgrounds for the 31st annual Gater News Motorsports Exposition and Trade Show on Saturday and Sunday March 12 and 13.
