Spaw celebrates birthday with CJ Speedway win

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 3, 2024) – The 2024 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing season got underway on Friday night at the CJ Speedway on a nice night for racing. 

The headliner of the night was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event with a stellar field of drivers set for the 16-lap feature. Kirk Kinsley led in the early going before sixth starting Johnny Spaw was able to put his no. 00 out front.

With Spaw out front, Corey Strothman and Dustin Griffiths joined in a three-car breakaway battling for the lead. Spaw took the win and Strothman crossed under the checkers in second but failed post-race inspection giving second to Griffiths. John Oliver Jr. came on strong in the late going to take third. 

The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature saw Washington driver Brandon Banks score the win. 

Banks shot into the lead from the outside front row start but was quickly challenged by CJ Speedway hot shoes Kurt Kile and Jarrett Brown. The three put on quite a race for the lead but as the laps wound down it was Banks holding off a late-race charge by Brown to score the win. Jadin Fuller was able to just get by Kile in taking third at the checkers. 

The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod main event was another good race to the finish as Shaun Slaughter outdueled Colton Livezey for the win.

Livezey led early before Slaughter was able to take the point. Slaughter went on to record the opening night win ahead of Livezey and Dylan VanWyk. 

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature field took the green with Jason Schutterle leading lap number one before a caution for Ryan Havel, who had come to a stop on the back chute.

On the restart, third starting Luke Phillips took over the lead and went on to record the win despite a late-race charge by Preston McDonald who turned in a great opening night run in taking second ahead of Shane Richardson. 

Racing will continue at CJ Speedway on Friday, May 8 with Superior Steering Wheels and Graphics Night at the races. Hot laps will get underway at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.

CJ Speedway hosts Friday night finale of 2020

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (Aug. 28) – The weekly Friday night racing season at CJ Speedway came to a close with a great night of racing on the perfectly prepared multi-groove race track on the Louisa County Fairgrounds.  The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars put on their usual side-by-side thrilling racing with the winner in doubt until the checkers waved in the 20 lap main event. David Brandies scored a hard-fought win over track champion, Adam Bell.  Brandies led the entire race but was hounded by Jason See and Bell and all three drivers had a shot at the win as they took the white flag in tightly bunched pack. Murty tops star-studded field at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 7) – Friday provided another thrilling night of racing at CJ Speedway.   The headliner of the night was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature which had the fans on the edge of their seats as the non-stop feature saw a pack of 10 drivers in the early going trying to all battle to the front.  Dallon Murty made a rare appearance at CJ, started 12th and joined the gaggle of drivers in the charge to the front. Murty broke out of the pack by overtaking early leader Dustin Griffiths as the 20 lap main event passed the midway point.  Murty stretched the lead as the battle for second was waged again involving several drivers. Brown repeats, Spaw returns to CJ Speedway victory lane

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 20, 2022) – Friday night racing was held at CJ Speedway with a large increase in car count and an action packed night of close racing on the slick and smooth 4/10-mile dirt track on the Louisa County Fairgrounds. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature saw Jarrett Brown make his way to victory lane for the second consecutive week. Brown steadily worked to the front from a fifth row start and made the winning pass on lap 12 of the 16-lap feature. Brown slipped by race leader Dakota Simmons by using multiple lines on the very racy track. Simmons took second at the checkers ahead of early leader Jonathan Huston. Johnny Spaw has been so busy building race cars that his racing schedule has been very limited.
