Burns wins barn burner at Kossuth County

ALGONA, Iowa (Aug. 17, 2023) – James Burns made an exciting pass coming out of turn four with one lap to go for the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature win Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway.

Micah Lavrenz was the leader after the first lap. Burns edged ahead but fell all the way back to seventh after getting a little tag on the tail from Lavrenz that got him loose and his car sideways.

Jay Sidles took advantage of the front two getting together and led for the next five laps as Brandon Nielsen, Josh Sidles and Burns slowly reeled him in.

Nielsen took over the top spot on lap eight as Josh Sidles and Burns went door-to-door for the runner-up spot in the race. Burns constantly made up ground on entry into the corners and got past Josh Sidles and went to work on passing Nielsen.

The Algona driver continued to put pressure on the back bumper on the veteran Spencer driver and pulled a great move coming out of turn number four to take the lead with one lap left.

Burns stayed smooth on his line and went onto his second victory of the season and just his third overall of his career with probably the best race of his seven-year career.

Nielsen finished second followed by Josh Sidles, Mike Smith and Jay Sidles.

Charlie Stevens and Justin Raymond brought the field of Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods to the flag stand and Raymond edged ahead of Stevens after the first trip around the oval.

As the feature progressed, Alex Smith, Matt Looft, Jake Simpson, Stevens and Raymond put on quite a show for the nice crowd in the stands.

Looft took over the lead on lap number eight and never gave up that top spot to go onto his 10th feature win of the season at Kossuth County Speedway. Raymond held on to the second spot closely followed by Simpson, Smith and Stevens.

The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature saw pole sitter Todd Ahrenstorff lead the first two laps before Donovan Smith took over the top spot.

Once out in clean air, Smith pulled away from the field to earn his third feature victory of the season in Algona this summer. Zayn Feaster had another strong run to place second as Kevin Opheim won an entertaining battle for third over Bruce Wickman and Chad Palmer.

Todd Stinehart has been strong in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds the second half of the season and he was again on Thursday night.

He took the lead right off the green flag and never trailed in the 15-lap feature to earn his second feature win of the season to go along with his big Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans victory at the track in July.

Jeremy Mills made a late run at Stinehart to finish as the runner-up as Nick Meyer was third, Sam Hoffman ended up in fourth and Cody Knecht rounded out the top five.

Kaytee DeVries dominated in winning her first local Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact feature of the season.
