Opening night attracts 100-plus cars to Kossuth County

ALGONA, Iowa (May 21) – It was opening night at Kossuth County Speedway May 21 without any specta­tors in the grandstands but that did not deter a grand total of 103 cars from dotting the pits at Al­gona. 

While the IMCA Modified featured was a heated battle throughout, pole-sitter Cody Knecht led the whole way to earn the win. Just a caution flag on lap number five delayed the Whittemore driver trip into the win­ner’s circle.

Austin Wolf and Jeremy Mills both challenged Knecht but he refused to give up the lead.

Thirty-one IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars vied for spots in their main event grid. Devin Smith grabbed the early but Jeffrey Larson pulled even at midway and took the lead on the following lap. 

Both Troy Swearington and Smith kept pressure on Larson but he went onto the win with Smith second and Swearington third.

Zack Smidt paced the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Jared Boumeester was the Karl Kustoms North­ern SportMod winner.

Kaytee DeVries topped the Mach-1 Sport Compact main.

While fans were not allowed, each driver could have a maximum of 10 people in their pit area with social distancing procedures in place.

Burns wins barn burner at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (Aug. 17, 2023) – James Burns made an exciting pass coming out of turn four with one lap to go for the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature win Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway. Micah Lavrenz was the leader after the first lap. Burns edged ahead but fell all the way back to seventh after getting a little tag on the tail from Lavrenz that got him loose and his car sideways. Jay Sidles took advantage of the front two getting together and led for the next five laps as Brandon Nielsen, Josh Sidles and Burns slowly reeled him in. Nielsen took over the top spot on lap eight as Josh Sidles and Burns went door-to-door for the runner-up spot in the race. Burns constantly made up ground on entry into the corners and got past Josh Sidles and went to work on passing Nielsen. Salute to Veterans checkers fly for Logue following first Kossuth County feature win 

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (July 21, 2022) – It was great night that started early with a loud bang that most people thought was fireworks and ended in the wee hours of the next morning with a louder bang after a great evening of dirt track racing.  The sixth annual Salute to Veterans Hunting with Heroes Night on Thursday at the Kossuth County Speedway was another home run. The event that has become the biggest event of the year of the track took place in front of a grandstand full of veterans and fans. Johnathon Logue and Randy Brands were $3,500 winners in the evening’s headline events, the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, respectively. Logue and Jesse Rogotzke brought the 24-car Modified field to the flag stand for the green flag and while  Logue led all 25 laps, his first-ever trip to victory lane at Algona did not come easily. Jones, Fett are grand winners at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 11) – They did it in different fashion, but both had $1,000 paydays as Devin Jones and Colby Fett won features at the Kossuth County Speedway Thursday night. Jones led almost the whole way in the in the Bayer Crop Science Bumble Bee Nationals Mach-1 Sport Compact main event while Fett only led two laps, but they were the most important laps to take the resched­uled Wyffels Hybrids special for Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods. A season-high car count of 100 was on hand, including 25 SportMods and 21 Sport Compacts. After a complete restart in the 4-cylinder event, Jones grabbed the early lead and held that advantage most of the race. With five laps to go, Nate Coopman took over as the new leader.  Jones stayed right with Coopman and came across the finish line for the double checkered flags less than a car length ahead.
