Opening night attracts 100-plus cars to Kossuth County

ALGONA, Iowa (May 21) – It was opening night at Kossuth County Speedway May 21 without any specta­tors in the grandstands but that did not deter a grand total of 103 cars from dotting the pits at Al­gona. 

While the IMCA Modified featured was a heated battle throughout, pole-sitter Cody Knecht led the whole way to earn the win. Just a caution flag on lap number five delayed the Whittemore driver trip into the win­ner’s circle.

Austin Wolf and Jeremy Mills both challenged Knecht but he refused to give up the lead.

Thirty-one IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars vied for spots in their main event grid. Devin Smith grabbed the early but Jeffrey Larson pulled even at midway and took the lead on the following lap. 

Both Troy Swearington and Smith kept pressure on Larson but he went onto the win with Smith second and Swearington third.

Zack Smidt paced the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Jared Boumeester was the Karl Kustoms North­ern SportMod winner.

Kaytee DeVries topped the Mach-1 Sport Compact main.

While fans were not allowed, each driver could have a maximum of 10 people in their pit area with social distancing procedures in place.

Briese breezes to Kossuth County checkers

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (May 28) – Jason Briese led a fast field of IMCA Modifieds to the flag stand and all the way to the checkered flag Thursday night at Kossuth County Speedway.  Briese built a comfortable advantage early as there was a four-car battle for second between Nick Meyer, Jeremy Mills, Brandon Beckendorf and Kelly Shryock. Austin Wolf joined that group to create a six-car breakaway through the first half of the race. Mills took over the runner-up spot at the half way mark of the feature as it was a three-car breakaway by then with Briese, Mills and Shryock.  Briese continued to hold the top spot and the only delay to his appearance in the winner’s circle was a yellow flag on nine as the Cleghorn driver gladly took the double checkered flags from flagman Logan Kelly first. Salute to Veterans show at Kossuth County draws 137 cars

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 27, 2023) – It was the eighth annual Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans night at Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday as the event just continues to break more records every year. An event-high 137 cars signed in the pit shack to compete for an increased purse but more importantly a hand-carved trophy and an opportunity to give a veteran a prize worth at least $300 with a top three finish. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature saw a veteran driver win what he said in the winner’s circle was the biggest victory in his racing career. Todd Stinehart took the top spot early and built a lead but the yellow flag came out lap number three and again three laps later. But after that, the feature went non-stop as emotional Stinehart was elated in victory lane with the biggest win of his 28-year career and a nice $3,500 first place check helped a little bit, too. Night number three at Kossuth County draws 93 IMCA entries

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (May 23) – A season-high 93 IMCA entries visited the oval on night number three of rac­ing this season at Kossuth County Speedway. Jake O’Neil came from back in the pack to win the IMCA Modified feature after early runs at the front by Aaron Benson and then Kelly Shryock. O’Neil took the lead with five laps to go and never looked back. Jeremy Mills was the runner-up with Shryock taking third.  Jeramie Faber was the early leader in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature before Alec Fett grabbed the lead after a caution on the third lap.
