Monson crosses Bumble Bee Nationals off IMCA bucket list

ALGONA, Iowa (July 6, 2023) – Go ahead and cross the Bumble Bee Nationals off Oliver Monson’s races to win bucket list.

Monson raced all the way from 11th starting to win Kossuth County Speedway’s 4-cylinder special Thursday night, topping a who’s who type field of Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact drivers.

The win was good for $1,000. The feeling of accomplishment that came with those checkers was worth more.

“We just put the car up top and let it go,” said Monson, who had the lead seven circuits into the 25-lapper and handled half a dozen restarts and some lapped traffic before crossing the stripe ahead of 10th starting Mick Rykhus and 14th starting Nate Coopman.

“And obviously everything ended pretty well.”

Michigan visitor Trever Cronick and Kaytee DeVries rounded out the top five. Drivers from four states filled the 22-car main event grid.

“This win was huge,” said Monson. “I’ve been trying for it for a long time. There are a couple more big races to win (most notably the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s) and now we’ll look forward to those.”

Jeremy Mills was the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified winner Thursday at Algona. Kevin Opheim topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Mike Smith charged to the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock checkers and Matthew Looft led the way for the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods.

Nielsen thunders to rich Hobby checkers at Algona

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (June 13) – Cody Nielsen made like lightning in winning Thursday’s Thunder­dome IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock Shootout at Kossuth County Speedway. The victory paid $1,000 and came ahead of defending race winner Dylan Nelson.  Josh Sidles and Jamie Weishaar brought the feature field to the flag stand as Sidles took the ini­tial lead.  Cautions came out on laps two and eight to bunch the field back up; Nielsen grabbed the lead at halfway and went on to his second feature win of the season at Algona.  Keeran Sampson, national points leader Leah Wroten and Josh Sidles completed the top five. Nielsen also scored hard charger honors after starting 11th.  Jeremy Mills raced to IMCA Modified career win number 99 and Heath Tulp topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature.  Alec Fett was first to the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod checkers while Jay DeVries was the Mach-1 Sport Compact winner. Opening night attracts 100-plus cars to Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (May 21) – It was opening night at Kossuth County Speedway May 21 without any specta­tors in the grandstands but that did not deter a grand total of 103 cars from dotting the pits at Al­gona.  While the IMCA Modified featured was a heated battle throughout, pole-sitter Cody Knecht led the whole way to earn the win. Just a caution flag on lap number five delayed the Whittemore driver trip into the win­ner’s circle. Austin Wolf and Jeremy Mills both challenged Knecht but he refused to give up the lead. Thirty-one IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars vied for spots in their main event grid. Devin Smith grabbed the early but Jeffrey Larson pulled even at midway and took the lead on the following lap.  Both Troy Swearington and Smith kept pressure on Larson but he went onto the win with Smith second and Swearington third. Shryock, DeVries are repeat winners at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (June 6) – Kelly Shryock and Kaytee DeVries both won for the for the second time this season at Kossuth County Speedway, in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and Mach-1 Sport Compact divisions, on June 6. Shryock started on the outside of the fourth row as Derek Green was the early leader in the Stock car feature. Cautions on the eighth and 10th laps brought the 17-car field back together as Shryock slowly reeled in Green. Shryock passed Green with two laps to go to park his no. 3 car in the winner’s circle for the second straight week at Algona. DeVries had the early lead before an early incident that brought out the yellow flag and gave Megan Sandvig the front spot.  DeVries battled back to the front to regain the lead and held off Jade Lange for the win. Jacob Bleess was the IMCA Modified winner and 10th starting Leah Wroten topped the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main. Colby Fett was first to the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod checkers.
