Marolf leads IMCA Late Model finish at Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (July 1, 2023) – Despite lingering sprinkles Saturday afternoon, the racing program went on as scheduled at the Maquoketa Speedway and six IMCA feature events were held in a swiftly run program which saw the final checkered flag of the night wave at 9:30 p.m.

The night kicked off with the conclusion of the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event halted due to weather a week ago with one lap in the books. The rescheduled feature went off very quickly with Charlie Mohr picking up his second consecutive win. Mohr held off Mark Schulte and Ray Cox Jr. in scoring the 20-lap victory.

The regularly scheduled program then got underway with the qualifying heats run in very quick fashion.

The IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature saw 18 drivers take the green with Nick Marolf setting a blistering pace at the onset.

Marolf led the caution-free 25-lap main event the entire distance and the win was his first at Maquoketa in several attempts. Evan Miller made his first appearance at Maquoketa in 2023 and came away with a second place finish ahead of CJ Horn. 

Saturday’s scheduled IMCA Modified feature belonged to Jeff Larson, who raced well out front while a spirited battle for second was waged. At the finish it was Cox taking second ahead of Chris Zogg and Schulte. 

The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature began with an outstanding field of 24 drivers taking the initial green flag. The pack put on an impressive showing with the main event going caution free green to checkers.

Jarett Franzen got out font early and went on to record the win by holding off the constant challenges of Ben Chapman. The 1JR of Chapman was able to show his nose on several occasions but Franzen drove a flawless race in taking the checkers ahead of Chapman and Jacob Arp. 

IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars never disappoint as the action is always very competitive and Jason Bahrs scored his second Maquoketa Speedway win of the season by topping the 15-lap feature.

Bahrs took the win ahead of Kewaunee, Wis., visitor Aiden Gretz with Jacob Ellithorpe crossing the finish line in third. 

Randy LaMar added another feature win to his resume in 2023 by scoring the win in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. LaMar held off a strong run by Jimmy Doescher, who took second ahead of Kile Vohringer. 

IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing will continue at Maquoketa on Saturday, July 8 with a full program that includes the IMCA Late Models. It will be Kunes Nissan Night with Christmas in July being celebrated. 

The Red Line Oil Kids Club will host Mr. and Mrs. Claus plus a special appearance by The Grinch. Hot laps will be set to get underway at 6 p.m.

Lemke, Larson, Franzen, LaMar are All Star Night winners

The race hungry fans were treated to an exciting night of racing.  Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds saw Illinois un-retired driver Scotte Lemke pick up the win. Lemke was a fixture at Tri-State tracks in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s before sitting out for 16 years. Ellithorpe throws slider to win thriller at Maquoketa

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 13, 2023) – Saturday was another one of those race days the weatherman threatened to throw a curve ball at the plans for a night of racing at Maquoketa Speedway. The threat of wet weather moving in was not realized and racing went on as scheduled.  The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature provided lots of exciting racing with the final laps run with the win up for grabs. Jerry Miles rode the high side of the quarter mile for the first 13 laps in the lead. A late-race caution set up a two-lap dash to the finish. Jacob Ellithorpe threw a hard slider at Miles in turn one and the 72 of Ellithorpe and the 4 of Miles raced down the back chute wheel-to-wheel coming to the white flag. Ellithorpe was able to nose out front and take the win by less than a car length. Bodin, Nelson, Stamm, Richardson all score first Maquoketa wins 

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (Aug. 5, 2023) – Regular IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing returned to Maquoketa Speedway following the Jackson County Fair and several drivers scored their first-ever Maquoketa wins during a program that saw a huge field of 122 drivers take part in the action.  The IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature saw a new driver make his way to victory lane following the action-packed 25-lap feature. Jesse Bodin made the jump into the Late Models after racing a Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod the last few years. Bodin raced to the front from his third row start and went on to score his first-ever win at the Maquoketa Speedway topping a strong 21-car field.  Bodin took the win ahead of a couple of very strong weekly contenders at the Maquoketa Speedway. Dalton Simonsen nipped Andy Nezworski for second at the line.  Jeff Larson is closing in on a career milestone in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds and scored his 99th career feature win in the division on Saturday.
