Five IMCA feature winners decided on final laps at CJ

By Jerry Mackey

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 2, 2023) – All five IMCA feature events came down to the final laps, with winners being determined on the final straight away Friday at CJ Speedway.

The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event came down to the final corner as race leader Kurt Kile encountered lapped traffic and shot to the extreme high line of the speedway in turn four. This allowed an opening on the bottom side of the track and Jarrett Brown was there to take advantage of the opening.

Brown was able to get to the checkers less than a car length ahead of Kile. The 77 of Kile led the majority of the race only to be bested by Brown on the last lap. Kile took second ahead of Dakota Simmons.

The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event was another action-packed event that saw close racing, some bumps and a driver racing from the back twice.

When the checkers flew it was Adam Bell parking in victory lane for the first time this season. Known to be an around the tires racer, Bell used two different lines around the track to take the lead from Norman Bean Jr.

Bean had led since the dropping of the green before Bell took over the top spot. Johnny Spaw was involved in an incident early in the race and was forced to the pit area to pull sheet metal away from the tires. That would be the first of two visits to the pit area for Spaw, who still recovered and raced back through the field to take second at the checkers.

Dustin Griffiths won the battle for third ahead of Bean.

One of the most successful Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod drivers in the area of late, Dylan VanWyk added another trophy to his collection on Friday night.

Van Wyk had to throw two sliders at race leader Justin Becker before he was able to secure the lead. On the second slider, Becker checked up slightly which avoided contact and VanWyk was able to race away to the win. Carter VanDenberg raced with the leaders the entire race and took second just ahead of Becker.

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main event saw Luke Phillips break out of a pack battling for the lead and race on to another win at CJ Speedway. Phillips has been having a great season at Columbus Junction and the win will allow him to gain on point leader Randy LaMar who ran second on Friday night. Billy Stanford crossed under the checkers in third.

And the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact 10-lap main event win went to Kolby Sabin.

Sabin, who makes the tow from Des Moines on Friday nights, took the win just ahead of Caleb Giese, who was celebrating his 19th birthday on Friday. Darin Smith finished third.

IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing will return to CJ Speedway on Friday, June 9 with racing in all five IMCA Weekly racing divisions. Hot laps will take to the track at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.
