Becerra wins IMCA Modified thriller at Lee County

DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 5, 2023) – His last-lap momentum made the difference for Austen Becerra in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature at Lee County Speedway.

Bill Roberts Jr. moved to the outside of the front row after Levi Smith was unable to answer the call and took advantage to grab the initial lead over Jadin Fuller and Dennis LaVeine.

Three early yellows slowed action but once back to green Roberts, Mark Burgtorf and Becerra put on the early candidate for race of the year as the three raced two- and even three-wide at times for the top spot, with Roberts holding them off at the line to be scored the leader.

Coming to the white flag, Becerra went to the bottom to show Roberts his nose. Going into turn three to get the checkered, Roberts came off the top to block Becerra, only to have Becerra use the momentum off the top of four to grab the checkered flag.

Burgtorf then edged Roberts at the line for second.

CJ Horn was the IMCA Sunoco Late Model winner, ahead of Jeremy Pundt and Dennis Woodworth.

Brayton Carter won another Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature and Jason Cook topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars.

Chevy Barnes held off a last-lap challenge from Chandler Fullenkamp, who started seventh, to claim his first career Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact feature win. Brandon Reu came from ninth to finish third.

Coming up on Friday, May 12 will be the second of seven qualifying rounds of the Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Late Model Drive For 5, presented by Floyd’s Waste Systems, JJ Nichting Company Case IH Company, Ideal Ready Mix, Triple 777 Trucking, Woodworth Attorney at Law, Triple R Performance Engines, B&B Propane, Budweiser, Conrad Trucking, Donnellson Tire & Service, KQ92, and Big Country 103.1.

 
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing to follow.

Oliver repeats at Pepsi Lee County Speedway

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 7) – John Oliver Jr. went back-to-back with his second consecutive Budweiser IMCA Modified feature win Friday at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Levi Smith and Mitch Boles led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 18-lap event, with Boles grabbing the early lead over Smith and Jeff Waterman. Boles held the top spot until lap three, when Waterman got under him. The second of two restarts saw Waterman jump back out front, John Oliver Jr., who started eighth, and Brandon Lennox, who started ninth, close behind. Oliver followed in Waterman’s tire tracks over the next seven laps, waiting for an opportunity to get the lead away from him.  Coming off turn four to complete lap 16, Waterman slid up the track, which allowed Oliver to shoot under him for the lead. $250 Sunoco bonus moves to Pepsi Lee County Speedway this Friday night

VINTON, Iowa – The payday gets even better this week for the IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature winner at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. As part of a regular points night of racing, the IMCA Late Model winner pockets an extra $250 courtesy of Sunoco Race Fuels. Sunoco bonuses are being presented at IMCA Late Model sanctioned weekly tracks this year. Drivers are eligible for only one bonus during the 2020 racing season. If the feature winner is a previous Sunoco winner, the bonus moves to the next eligible position. 2020 winners have been Jeff Aikey at Independence Motor Speedway, Matt Ryan at 34 Raceway, Joel Callahan at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway, Eric Pollard at 300 Raceway, Justin Kay at Davenport Speedway and Dalton Simonsen at Marshalltown Speedway. Last weekend Ben Sukup, Cory Dumpert and Jim Johnson claimed the bonus money with wins at US 30 Speedway, Boone County Raceway and Off Road Speedway respectively. IMCA will announce mid-week before the dates bonuses are to be awarded at each track.

Woodworth tops Drive for 5, Profeta wins career first feature at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 23, 2023) –  Dennis Woodworth won the headline race and Nicholas Profeta won for the first time Friday at Lee County Speedway. The 25-lap Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For 5 IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature took the green flag with Woodworth and Nick Marolf on the front row. Woodworth edged Marolf to lead lap one over Tommy Elston. While Woodworth worked the bottom of the track, Marolf work the top and used the momentum off the top of turn four to edge ahead on Woodworth on lap four. Marolf pulled away from Woodworth before encountering lapped traffic on lap 12. This allowed Woodworth to close back in. Woodworth used lapped traffic to slip back by Marolf for the top spot on lap 16, only to have Marolf get the lead back on the next lap.
