IMCA Modifieds back in action Saturday at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (May 30) – Kenny Schrader took the early lead and then schooled the IMCA Modified field following a late restart Saturday at The Quick Quarter of the Springfield Raceway. For Schrader, the opening night win marked a special moment as the very popular driver celebrated to the date his first-ever race and first-ever win 49 years ago. He’d also celebrated his 65th birthday just a day earlier. Schrader, in his Federated Auto Parts Modified, took the early lead from Derek Watson after starting third in the 20-lap Bad Boy Mowers feature.  Out in front, Schrader opened a half-a-track lead until a late caution bunched the field as fast moving Steven Bowers Jr. was getting the chance to try and steal the thunder at Jerry Hoffman’s high banked racy oval.  With Schrader out in front on the Delaware Double File restart, Bowers elected to go to the top and close some ground. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – When it comes to Modified Racing in Missouri, the name Scott Drake comes to mind.  His son Trevor is following in Scott’s tire tracks as he took the lead on lap four and like a veteran held back Ash Flat, Ark., hard charger Shawn Walsh in a two-lap shootout to capture his first-ever IMCA Modified feature at the Quick Quarter Springfield Raceway.  The younger Drake started his career in the Midwest Modified class and moved to sportmod rac­ing before stepping aside to finish his engineering degree. He returned to racing around mid-sea­son last year.  Derek Watson had set the quick pace early. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (June 13) – Defending track champion James Thompson made a low groove move and then held back repeated charges from Dillion McCowan to capture his first IMCA Modified feature win of the season Saturday at The Quick Quarter of Springfield Raceway. Thompson got back on track after struggling in the first two races of the season. “We had some tough luck on opening night and last week we just flat missed it,” said Thompson, who became the third different winner in as many weeks at Springfield, following Ken Schrader and first-time winner Trevor Drake to the top of the podium.  The 20-lap feature saw six cars battling for the top spot during the first half of the race.
