Pepsi Lee County crowns track champions

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Aug. 1) – Mark Burgtorf became the first two-time Shottenkirk Parts Ex­press Drive For 5 IMCA Sunoco Late Model winner on a rare Saturday night of racing at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Nick Marolf and Andy Eckrich drew front row starts for the $1,000 to win main event and Marolf grabbing the early lead over Burgtorf and the youngster C.J Horn. Burgtorf tried to work under Marolf over the next three laps, but Marolf was able to hold him off at the line each lap.  Coming off turn four to complete lap five, Burgtorf was able to get under Marolf and edge him at the line by inches to take over the top spot. Just after the lap was scored complete, the first and only caution of the race slowed action. On the restart, Burgtorf jumped back out front with Marolf and Horn close behind. By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 12, 2023) – Wins in back-to-back starts at Lee County Speedway saw CJ Horn capture his first Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For 5 IMCA Sunoco Late Model victory on Friday night. Horn and Jeff Guengerich drew the front row for the 25-lap feature, with Horn jumping out into the lead on lap one over Guengerich and Jeremy Pundt. While Horn started to pull away, Denny Woodworth, Dalton Simonsen, who started 8th, Jay Johnson, who started 9th, and Tommy Elston battled Guengerich and Pundt in the top seven. Despite heavy lapped traffic late in the race, Horn went on to claim his second win in a row at the track, with this one worth $1,000. Woodworth won the battle for second, Simonsen was third, Elston was fourth with Johnson coming home fifth. Austen Becerra led from lap 11 to the finish in repeating as Friesen Performance IMCA Modified winner from a week ago. By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that took all of April’s and most of May’s scheduled race events at Pepsi Lee County Speedway, promoters Brian and Marcie Gaylord have announced several schedule changes to the Drive For 5 program for IMCA Sunoco Late Models. There will still be five $1,000 to win feature qualifying nights to help set the stage for a potential $5,000 IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 payday in mid September at the track. Four of the qualifying nights will take place on weekly Friday night events, on June 12, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 21, with one qualifying night on Saturday, Aug. 1. Drivers who compete in at least four of those events will be eligible to run for a top prize of $5,000 in the Saturday, Sept. 12 finale.  Shottenkirk Parts Express, local sponsor of the division, is the title sponsor of Drive For 5 as well.
