Season champions crowned at Kossuth County

ALGONA, Iowa (Aug. 20) – In the final evening of dirt track racing of the summer Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway, unofficial season champions were crowned in each of the divisions.

Kaytee DeVries overcame a three-point deficit by earning her fourth feature win of the season to edge Lucas Parsons by one point for the Mach-1 Sport Compact championship. 

The early leader in the 12-car feature was A.J. Myott as the caution came out on lap five with Myott still in the lead. Off the restart, DeVries grabbed the lead and went onto the victory. 

Myott held on for a runner-up finish as Jade Lange was third. 

The closest feature of the evening was in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Jake Masters kept the heat on Kelly Shryock for the final two laps but the Fertile driver wrapped up the season championship in the class with his fifth feature win. 

Alec Fett used the high side of the track to grab the lead in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main. Fett went from 11th to first as the hard charger and Matt Looft ended as champion.

Josh Sidles’ first trip to victory lane this summer was delayed only by a yellow flag on the ninth lap as he cruised to the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock win. Cody Nielsen was the hard charger as he went from 11th to third and was also point champion for the class.

Jeremy Mills was lurking behind Nick Meyer for the final 11 laps but could not get past as he earned his third IMCA Modified win of the season. Despite not winning a feature all year long at the track, runner-up Mills’ consistency throughout the year earned him the modified point title. 

All 2020 IMCA point standings become official on Oct. 26.

Nelson hustles to $1,000 Hobby Stock win

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (June 14) – Along with talent, winning a special in dirt track racing frequently in­volves two other factors, a little luck and a good draw. Dylan Nelson used all those things to top a big field of IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks in a $1,000 to win main event Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway. Nelson started on the outside of the front row and led all 20 laps. The caution flew on four occa­sions to regroup the field, but each time Nelson pulled away from the pack. Cody Nielsen ended up in second place with Chanse Hollatz placing third. Leah Wroten took fourth and Greg Sidles was fifth. Kyle Sidles went from 22nd starting to eighth as the hard charger. Other feature winners during the evening were Rob Hughes in the IMCA Modifieds, Calvin Lange in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, George Nordman in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Oliver Monson in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Nielsen thunders to rich Hobby checkers at Algona

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (June 13) – Cody Nielsen made like lightning in winning Thursday’s Thunder­dome IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock Shootout at Kossuth County Speedway. The victory paid $1,000 and came ahead of defending race winner Dylan Nelson.  Josh Sidles and Jamie Weishaar brought the feature field to the flag stand as Sidles took the ini­tial lead.  Cautions came out on laps two and eight to bunch the field back up; Nielsen grabbed the lead at halfway and went on to his second feature win of the season at Algona.  Keeran Sampson, national points leader Leah Wroten and Josh Sidles completed the top five. Nielsen also scored hard charger honors after starting 11th.  Jeremy Mills raced to IMCA Modified career win number 99 and Heath Tulp topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature.  Alec Fett was first to the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod checkers while Jay DeVries was the Mach-1 Sport Compact winner. Burns earns first career feature win

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (July 16) – James Burns won his first career feature race to highlight an exciting night of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday. The big night of racing drew another nice crowd count of 104 cars filling the pit area looking for a tune up for the upcoming Salute to Veterans show. Burns took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature holding off a late challenge from Brandon Nielsen. The Al­gona driver was racing with a heavy heart as his grandmother had passed away earlier in the day and in a victory lane interview, dedicated the race to her.  Jay Sidles grabbed the early lead before an early caution. The race resumed as Burns used the high side to get past Sidles on lap four. He built a comfortable lead only to see Nielsen closing fast, but Burns slammed the door to set off a wild celebration in victory lane with his first career victory.  Brandon Nielsen took the runner-up spot as Cody Nielsen was third.
