VERNAL, Utah (June 28-29) – The second weekend installment of the 2019 Wild West Modified Tour ended a lot like the first.
Ricky Alvarado won the Friday night feature for IMCA Modifieds at Diamond Mountain Speedway while Zane DeVilbiss topped the Saturday show. They’d also paced $1,000 to win, Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying shows during the opening weekend of the tour at Aztec Speedway in May.
Alvarado’s tour-leading 33rd win, and seventh at Vernal, came from outside the front row pole and through heavy lapped traffic before the checkers flew. The last 10 circuits stayed green in the 25-lapper and Regan Tafoya and Michael hale completed the top three.
“The car was really good. I was able to make the top work,” Alvarado said. “Then when I got to lapped traffic, I was able to go lower on the track whenever I needed to.”
“It was a good weekend for us,” added Alvarado, who motored from ninth to third on Saturday. “The track was good and racy.”
DeVilbiss had similar sentiments, tuning up for Saturday’s IMCA Modified main by winning the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature … just his second-ever victory in the full-bodied class.
Dialing in a car for Brian Parker, DeVilbiss led much of the way before falling back to fifth. A caution with three laps to go set the stage for DeVilbiss, who got a good restart and raced his way back into the lead.
His 173rd career IMCA Modified win came in the weekend finale. Tafoya repeated as runner-up.
Ed Henderson was the Friday Stock Car winner, ahead of Aaron Spangler and DeVilbiss. Gene Henrie was second, Tyler Whetstone third on Saturday.
Brian Carey led Jason Wright and Cody Malcom across the stripe in the opening night Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod main. Josh Pate was the Saturday winner, with Morris Duncan and Carey in pursuit.
