Rebels are bound for Belleville

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (July 17) – For the first time in history, the Mel Hambelton Ford Racing POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series competed at the Hutchinson Nationals. Taylor Velasquez of Liberal, Kansas captured his first win of the year with the series at the 64th event Friday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, becoming the ninth different winner in eleven races.  Jordan Knight and J.D. Johnson set the pace for the 20-lap feature. Knight took off with the early lead while Williams worked his way from fifth starting to second by lap 11. Knight and Velasquez battled hard and made contact with a few laps remaining. Velasquez got past Knight for the lead on lap 19. With counties and states slowly reopening, he has been on the phone contacting track promoters to give his “Rebels” a chance to hit the track.  He scored a marquee event as the tour will join the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All-Star Circuit of Champi­ons appearance at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., on Sunday, June 7.  This $700 to win, $200 to start event for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars will be only the second race on the 2020 race season that has suffered through event cancelations and plenty of reschedul­ing. OBERLIN, Kan. (Aug. 18) – Jake Bubak continued his winning ways in United Rebel Sprint Se­ries action Friday, topping the 25-lap feature Saturday at Oberlin Speedway’s Bob Salem Memo­rial. The win was good for $700. Bubak took charge from his outside front row starting spot from the onset and began stretching his lead, Jake Martens wrestled second from Mark Walinder on lap four and began the pursuit of Bubak in earnest. Bubak proved he was the master through lapped traffic in the caution-free event as he captured his third feature of the year with the URSS and Martens settled for second. Third went to a rim-riding J.D Johnson as he passed both Jeremy Huish and Zach Blurton coming out of turn four to the checkers. Blurton beating Huish to line as he was caught behind a lapped car. Johnson’s bold move earned him the Keizer Wheels hard charger award as he had started 13th.
