Dodge City Modified checkers fly for Gray

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (May 5) – Kevin Gray battled into the lead on the fifth circuit then held off Arizona’s R.C. Whitwell over the closing rounds to post his first local IMCA Modified win since August of 2015 on opening night Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. Gray gridded the feature outside the front row, but it was pole starter Ryan Heger gunning into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Gray kept the heat on and raced back into the lead on the fifth lap. While Gray slipped away, Whitwell worked his way into second just past the mid­way point and closed in to challenge over the final circuits.  Whitwell poked his nose under Gray in turns three and four on the white flag lap and then took a shot on the high side on the final round, but Gray held steady to post the win. Dodge City opener set for Saturday night

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – With spring in full swing at long last, it’s time for the methanol to flow and the dirt to fly at Dodge City Raceway Park. The 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas gets the 2018 season under way in grand style with three must-see events over the course of the month of May. This month’s events at DCRP include the season-opener, the rescheduled Modified Stampede and the first appearance of the season for the United Rebel Sprint Series. It all begins with this Saturday night’s season-opening championship card on May 5.  After an idle weekend, action continues with the sixth annual Modified Stampede on Saturday, May 19.  The month of May then wraps up with a Memorial Day weekend special featuring the URSS Sprint Cars taking on the DCRP Sprint Cars on Saturday night, May 26. Inclement weather postpones Modified Stampede at Dodge City 

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – Mother Nature continues her domination of Dodge City Raceway Park in 2018 with Saturday’s scheduled event atop the 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas postponed due to inclement weather. With forecasts of excessive rain and frigid temperatures, Saturday’s sixth annual Modified Stam­pede has been rescheduled for Saturday night, May 19.  The event will feature a $750 winner’s share for IMCA Modifieds with Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks in action as well. With the opener nixed for a third consecutive time, Dodge City Raceway Park will now kick off the 2018 season on Saturday, May 5, with a full card of championship chase action.

Saturday practice precedes Dodge City season opener

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – Activity is picking up around the Dodge City Raceway Park 3/8-mile clay oval with opening night just 10 days away. But first, an open practice session is on tap for this Saturday, March 24 from 6-9 p.m. Grandstand admission is free with a $20 fee per person for admittance to the pit area. The practice session is open to all. Saturday’s practice session precedes the 2018 season opener by seven nights, with the Dodge City Raceway Park season officially getting under way on Saturday night, March 31. The March 31 season opener will feature a full card of championship racing action including IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. The March 31 event fires off at 7:30 p.m. with tickets $15 for adults while children 11 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes are $30. In total, the 2018 season at Dodge City Raceway Park is slated for 17 nights of action following Saturday’s open practice session.

Dodge City primed for big 2018 season with awards banquet in the books

(Jan. 27) – Setting the stage for a stellar 2018 racing season, Dodge City Raceway Park competitors and fans celebrated the recently-completed 2017 season with Satur­day night’s annual Awards Banquet. More than 200 attendees took in Saturday night’s festivities at the Western State Bank Expo adja­cent to the 3/8-mile Dodge City clay oval with the top contenders in each of the track’s five champion­ship chase divisions recognized during the evening. Taking top accolades in each division were Clay Sellard in the IMCA Modifieds, Jeff Kaup in the IMCA SportMods, Angel Munoz in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Reagan Sellard in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Taylor Velasquez in Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars, While others among the top 10 and each champion also picked up their hardware and point fund monies, Munoz picked up an extra $100 and the 2017 DCRP Feature Winner board for racking up the most feature wins over the course of the season. Munoz racked up six wins to top the over­all win charts [Read More]
