Trip to Desert Thunder yields 100th career win for DeVilbiss

FARMINGTON, N.M. (May 9) – After a relatively short five-hour tow, one of IMCA’s most traveled drivers could cross off another item on his racing to-do list. Zane DeVilbiss journeyed the Desert Thunder Raceway in Utah to win the Friday, May 9 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature. The victory was the career 100th for DeVilbiss, the 2010 national champion and four-time defending king in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region. “Winning the national championship is the biggest thing I’ve done in IMCA but getting 100 wins is the next. Frye starts his own win streak at Salina

By Larry Lowrey Jr. SALINA, Kan. (May 9) – For the first two races of the season in the M&H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mod division at Salina Speedway, Austin Carter came away with the victories. The big question Friday night was could he get three in a row? If so, someone forgot to let Tyler Frye in on it that Carter was supposed to get the hat trick. From his third row starting spot, Frye wasted little time getting to the front of the pack. At the front he would click off lap after lap while the 11ith starting Carter systematically worked his way up. Frye was too strong and he had built up enough of a lead that he wasn’t going to give it up, however, and picked up his first local win of the season. Woods makes most of late race restart in SST feature at Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (May 10) – A restart with five laps left proved to be the opportunity Dustin Woods needed Saturday night at Abilene Speedway. Woods went all the way to the top of the oval after the Sprint Series of Texas main event went back to green, passed Sean Mayfield for the lead and stayed in front to the finish of the 20-lapper. The victory was his IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour first and second of the season. He’s in the same Triple X Chassis as last year while armed with a new Russell Shoulders Racing Engines package. “I finally got it figured out,” Woods said following the win. Whitman masters IMCA Modifieds at 141 Speedway

By Greg Aregoni FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (May 10) – Johnny Whitman gambled and came up with the Friday night IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature win at 141 Speedway. With five laps remaining and everyone trying to run the bottom of the track, Whitman and Benji LaCrosse drove to the top of the track in their pursuit of leader R.M. VanPay. Both seemed to hook up like a draft and move past everyone to focus on VanPay. Whitman charged to the lead with LaCrosse in tow with three laps remaining. LaCrosse tried multiple times to dethrone Whitman but was denied after trying every way around the leader. Whitman took the checkers in front of LaCrosse to earn his first win of the season. VanPay came in third. Once in front of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car field, there was no catching Dustin Loberger. Brandon Long cruised to his second victory of the season in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main.

Wilinski, Frederick, Wassenberg are IMCA winners at Shawano

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (May 10) – Jerry Wilinski, Kyle Frederick and Tracy Wassenberg were winners of IMCA feature events Saturday at Shawano Speedway. Pole sitter Matt Oreskovich took the lead at the start of the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature. Wilinski had moved from his seventh place starting position up to second by lap three and put a pass on Oreskovich for the lead on lap six. Oreskovich continued to pressure Wilinski and took the lead back on lap nine. Wilinski battled right back though on the following lap and regained the point. He was able to fend off Oreskovich for the win, while Jerry Muenster prevailed over son Eddie for third. Jet Racing renews title sponsorship of IMCA’s Central Region

BEATRICE, Neb. – Modified drivers in IMCA’s Central Region chase point fund shares furnished in part by Jet Racing again in 2014. The Beatrice, Neb., chassis builder’s 17th season of IMCA sponsorship is also its third consecutive as title sponsor for the Central Region, which includes sanctioned tracks in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and eastern Colorado. A $6,000 point fund will be paid to top 10 drivers in official point standings for the region, with the champion’s share at $2,500. Savage dominant in Quincy Stock Car win

(May 11) – Brandon Savage dominated the Powder Coat Plus IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature event Sunday at Quincy Raceway as he was never seriously challenged by the rest of the field. Terry Houston scored the second spot followed by Beau Tayler in third, Abe Huls in fourth and Jim Lynch in fifth. The Summy Tire and Auto Center IMCA SportMod main event was marred by the caution flag during the opening laps but the race to the checkered flag was a great one as the field found its rhythm. Smith battled past defending track champion Austin Allen on the second lap and led the rest of the way in the 25-lapper. “I’ve been trying to win one of these here for ten years now,” the happy victor exclaimed in victory lane. While Smith started the feature from the pole position, Allen led the opening round from the second row outside only to have Smith battle back into the lead the next time and stretch out a comfortable advantage until the race’s only caution with just five laps to go closed Allen back up to his rear bumper. Defending champion scores SportMod win at Eagle

By Greg Soukup EAGLE, Neb. (May 10) – Defending track champion Gary Saathoff won his first local NAPA IMCA Northern SportMod feature of the season Saturday at Eagle Raceway. Saathoff moved under Joey Feyen on the 10th circuit for the lead before Benji Legg vaulted all of the way up to 2nd after another lap. “I got a good start for the feature and that’s the key here at Eagle. The track ended up slick in the ‘A’ but there was some moisture down on the bottom,” Saathoff said. “So I put my left rear in it and stayed there.” Dylan Smith won his second straight Kaplan University IMCA Modified main while Eric Reichwaldt was promoted to the top spot in the Mud In America IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car feature after the apparent winner failed post-race tech.
