Kay continues Deery dominance with Cedar County checkers

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Justin Kay nearly had two trophies to show for his Tuesday night efforts at Cedar County Raceway. Kay won his sixth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature of the season, adding to his lead in the IMCA Late Model tour point standings. He’d run second in the Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature for Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds earlier in the evening. Dan Shelliam started outside row two in the 50 lap Deery Series main event and led the first 14 times around the Tipton oval. The third starting Kay drove by the next time around and was not challenged. Restarts at midway and on lap 39 took out lapped traffic and Kay’s margin of victory was most of 10 car lengths. The victory was Kay’s career 15th and paid $3,000. Southern Oregon to host $800 to win IMCA Modified race Aug. 15

By Ben Deatherage WHITE CITY, Ore. – On Saturday, Aug. 15, Southern Oregon Speedway will host the $800 to win Tune Up For The Lon Skinner Memorial special for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. This event will feature a promotion for children with kids 12 years and younger getting into the races for free. Modifieds are a staple at Southern Oregon Speedway with some of the most storied drivers coming from this region of the state. Jon DeBenedetti, Dane Smith, Bruce Rayburn, Mark Wauge, Monte Bischoff, Jeremy Richey, Brian Poppa, Albert Gill, Tom Glover and other chauffeurs have cut their teeth at this facility and went on to perform successful feats across the Western United States. The Lon Skinner Memorial is one of the crown jewels of IMCA Modified racing in the West and fans are guaranteed there will be some very talented drivers headed to White City on Aug. 15 to get valuable track time. Grandstand admission prices for adults are $14, juniors ages 13-17 are $12 and veterans and seniors are $10.

Barr wins at Abilene for career first SST victory

ABILENE, Texas (Aug. 8) – Even after Adam Barr won his Saturday night Sprint Series of Texas heat at Abilene Speedway, crew chief Josh Freeman saw room for improvement. Some tinkering produced a second place finish in the dash. Barr then went out and promptly won the 20-lap main event, his career-first SST victory. “It was amazing,” Barr said following the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car triumph. “To be able to pull something like this off against this level of competition was an honor, and something I’ll always cherish.” Barr started outside row four and was up to second just before a lap nine yellow. Howell best at Boyd again in Sprint Series of Texas show

BOYD, Texas (Aug. 7) – To absolutely no one’s surprise, Jason Howell was happy to see the Sprint Series of Texas pay a return visit Friday to Boyd Raceway. Howell motored from 10th starting to win his third IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour event of the season. The defending champion had also taken the checkers when the SST opened at his “home track” back in April. “I took the outside line to get to the front and passed teammate Danny Merrell on the bottom to take the lead about midway,” said Howell. “Luckily, there was enough room for me down there.” Merrell ended as the runner-up, close enough to keep Howell from feeling comfortable as the 20-lapper wound down. “I felt like second place was right behind me,” Howell admitted. “I ran like a dog with it’s tail stuck between his legs.” Cody Whitworth was third and Michelle Melton took fourth. Big Eagle jets to first night Can-Am checkers

WILLISTON, N.D. (Aug. 7-8) – Jett Big Eagle wasn’t quite sure on the date of his career first Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature win. You can bet he won’t forget the date of his second. The 15-year-old from Manor, Sask., started on the pole and led every lap of Williston Basin Speedway’s Can-Am Shootout opening night main event on Friday. He held off older brother Masen for the $1,200 checkers and Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth. “Masen got close on that last lap but I was able to close the door on him,” said Big Eagle, pumped at the prospect of being elected to the 2016 All-Star field. “It was great to get this win with him second and my other teammate, Joey Galloway, third.” The only caution of the 25-lap contest flew on the opening circuit. Snellenberger starts his own Stock streak at Seymour

By Dave Panske SEYMOUR, Wis. (Aug. 9) – Rod Snellenberger snapped Travis Van Straten’s winning streak and started one of his own Sunday at Seymour Speedway. Snellenberger wound up in the infield following contact late in the Coors Light IMCA Stock Car main. The other driver involved was called for the incident and Snellenberger was put back in front of the field. The battle continued for the final two laps with Snellenberger able to hold off Van Straten to capture his third feature win of the season and also end Van Straten’s string of three straight. Jay Matthias worked his way to the front of the Budweiser IMCA Modified field on the 17th circuit and drove to his first Seymour checkers since Aug. 18 of 2013. Championship contender Mike Wedelstadt was kayoed in an early six-car melee. Jeremy Cota was the O’Reilly Auto Parts IMCA Northern SportMod winner. All feature winners were presented with the five-foot tall tall, Kim Parsons Memorial trophy, to promote organ and tissue donation.

Sprint checkers fly again at I-90 for Eakin

By Steve Zwemke HARTFORD, S.D. (Aug. 8) – Nate Eakin was a powerhouse in the Coffee Cup IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car division Saturday at I-90 Speedway. Eakin won his heat race going away and then led all 20 laps of the feature for his third local win of the season. Several slide jobs were happening behind him, however. Dusty Ballenger and Colin Smith exchanged sliders before Ballanger eventually suffered mechanical problems. Ben Waxdahl then went back and forth with Smith and was able to finish ahead of the points leader by taking second.

Foulger, Ryland win IMCA features at Merced

(Aug. 9) – Gaining the lead when a slower car spun in front of Alex Wilson and collected him on lap 15, Troy Foulger scored the victory in the 20-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature Sunday at Merced Speedway. Wilson managed to salvage second by the finish. Fred Ryland drove a flawless race to win Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod 20-lapper.

$3,500 is top prize at Norman County Raceway’s IMCA Mod Challenge

ADA, Minn. (Aug. 5) – The Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified winner earns a $3,500 share of the $18,700 purse at Norman County Raceway’s Thursday, Aug. 13 Mod Challenge special. A qualifying event for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, the Challenge pays $2,250 for second place, $1,600 for third, $1,400 for fourth, $1,250 for fifth and $1,100 for sixth. Minimum start money is $250 and tow money is $50. Bonuses include the $250 clean sweep and $100 for longest tow, hard charger and tough luck. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Belleville Motorsports North Central Region and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded. Abelson repeats at Raceway Park

(Aug. 9) – With the track illuminated by lightning all around, Chris Abelson raced to his second straight Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory Sunday at Raceway Park. After being penalized for a restart infraction early in the race, Abelson charged from the rear of the field to the front of the pack with only a handful of laps remaining. Chasing Abelson to the checkers were Jim Thies, Ricky Stephan and Sean Barragan. Eighty-two year old Don Tank became one of a handful of drivers to win a sanctioned IMCA feature over the age of eighty when the first and second place Mach-1 Sport Compacts under the flag failed post race inspection. The win also drew Tank into the middle of the points championship race with only three weeks remaining.
