Green earns redemption and $2,000 at Southern Challenge

By J.M. Hallas ABILENE, Texas (Oct. 15) – A long green flag run at Abilene Speedway’s Ryan Bard Memorial Southern Challenge ended with Kevin Green in victory lane. Green caught Monte Bolton late in the 25-lap main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and gained a bit of redemption along with his career-best payday in the division. “We’d been running second before hitting an infield tire at 85 Speedway’s Bryan Mize Memorial. We were fast at Ennis but ended up not finishing,” Green said, “so this was kind of redemption for me.” The $2,000 win put Green on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He’d raced a Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod at Abilene previously and drew the outside pole start for the weekend’s Modified main event. Winter Nationals this weekend at Longdale Speedway

By Shawn Miller LONGDALE, Okla. – The Winter Nationals is developing into a strong event that helps close each season at Longdale Speedway. The third edition of the marquee event is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16 and will feature three IMCA sanctioned divisions. The first night will be the standard purse for each class with the Oct. 16 event paying $1,000 to win and $200 to start for both the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and IMCA SportMods and $800 to win and $100 to start for the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Sunday’s feature for the Modifieds is a 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying event. The opening night of the doubleheader will feature a full race program with the top 12 drivers in each class locked into Sunday’s starting grid. Bakersfield Budweiser Nationals IMCA Modified wins go to Dotson, Childress

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 7-8) – Ethan Dotson and Ricky Childress Jr. took different routes to $1,500 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified wins at Bakersfield Speedway’s Budweiser Nationals. Dotson started on the pole in Friday’s 40-lapper and led every lap, pulling away from Bobby Hogge IV and Robby Sawyer in the late going for the victory. Childress had to work his way up from 10th starting on Saturday. He was running third, just a couple car lengths off the pace when frontrunners Mike Johnson and Brad Pounds tangled late in the race. Their respective wins put both drivers on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Scott scores $5,000 IMCA Modified win at RPM Fall Nationals

By Mike Hughes HAYS, Kan. (Oct. 8) – Johnny Scott was the $5,000 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified winner at RPM Speedway’s Fall Nationals. Scott led all 40 laps of the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier at the 10th annual special. A few cautions kept the field close but Scott was able to outrun his brother Stormy to the checkers for the win. Jeff Taylor, who won the event in 2012, was third, followed by 2009 winner David Murray Jr. Cole Traugott rounded out the top five. Two hundred and sixty race teams from across the country were on hand at Hays. It was a three-way battle for all 30 laps in the $3,000 to win IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event between Jason Rogers, three-time race winner Mike Nichols and Casey Woken. JAMESTOWN, N.D. (Oct. 10) – Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds chase a $2,000 top check at Jamestown Speedway’s Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15 Stock Car Stampede. The Stampede is a qualifying event for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. The runner-up earns $1,500 with $1,000 paid for third; drivers taking the main event green earn a minimum of $300. Heat races begin at 7 p.m. on Friday with “B” features preceding Saturday’s main event. What’s new at the 45th annual Stampede is a $500 to win, minimum $120 to start race for the top 24 Modified non-qualifiers. Other non-qualifiers who finish their “B” race will be paid $50. ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Speedway rolls out the red carpet for four IMCA divisions at its 22nd annual Ryan Bard Memorial Southern Challenge special Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds race for $2,000 to win, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMods both for $1,700 to win and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $650 to win. The Modified feature is a 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. An open practice runs from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Lagroon, Grabouski are IMCA Modified winners at Salina’s Mid-America Clash

SALINA, Kan. (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) – When Mid-America Clash checkers flew at Salina Speedway, Corey Lagroon and Jordan Grabouski both went home with $1,500 checks for their Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature wins. Lagroon worked his way up from seventh in topping the Friday night feature, passing Derrick Brown following a restart after midway in the 25-lapper to earn a spot on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Grabouski, the 2016 national champion, also used a restart to his advantage on Saturday, motoring by Lagroon with 10 circuits left. “Friday was my fifth win at Salina this season,” noted Lagroon. “There were a couple late yellows and Derrick made it close.
