Burns earns first career feature win

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (July 16) – James Burns won his first career feature race to highlight an exciting night of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday. The big night of racing drew another nice crowd count of 104 cars filling the pit area looking for a tune up for the upcoming Salute to Veterans show. Burns took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature holding off a late challenge from Brandon Nielsen. The Algona driver was racing with a heavy heart as his grandmother had passed away earlier in the day and in a victory lane interview, dedicated the race to her.  Jay Sidles grabbed the early lead before an early caution. The race resumed as Burns used the high side to get past Sidles on lap four. He built a comfortable lead only to see Nielsen closing fast, but Burns slammed the door to set off a wild celebration in victory lane with his first career victory.  Brandon Nielsen took the runner-up spot as Cody Nielsen was third. Family time on the track: Jorgensen, grandsons square off in IMCA Late Model main at Harlan

HARLAN, Iowa – When the checkers flew at the conclusion of the June 20 IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature at Shelby County Speedway, the happiest driver in the race was probably the guy who finished ninth. Veteran Dave Jorgensen of Elkhorn, Neb., turned laps with grandsons Robbie and A.J. for just the second time this season that evening – a third racing grandson, Jakes, was on a fishing trip that Father’s Day weekend – and there were smiles all around before and after the show. “Racing binds us together. I get to see them more so it’s time well spent,” said Jorgensen. ”When I’m 75 or 80 it will be fun to look back, and I’m sure they’ll feel the same way.” Jorgensen’s son Dave Jr. retired after winning a track championship of his own and now serves as crew chief for his dad and boys. Robbie started racing in 2014 and was joined by A.J. in 2015 and Jake in 2019. “There are times you want to give them extra room but I try [Read More]

Gaylord finds glory at Dacotah, Zevenbergen wins 5th

MANDAN, N.D. (July 15) – When Tripp Gaylord drew the pole position for the IMCA Modified “A” feature on the Moritz Sport & Marine Dakota Classic Tour presented by Bismarck Motor Company at Dacotah Speedway, the real test began. A week with many frustrations for the Colorado racer finished out with a feeling of euphoria. Gaylord did double duty in the Modified and Stock Car all week long until Dacotah Speedway, handing the reins over to brother Ryan in order to focus on the Modified. He had made every feature in both classes until that point. Gaylord was a rocket from the drop of the green flag in Mandan, leading by over three seconds at one point and maneuvering lapped traffic to grab the $2,400 win. Already on the Fast Shafts Al-Star Invitational ballot, Gaylord was followed across the stripe by Jake O’Neil, Robert Hellebust, Shawn Strand and Alex Stanford. Consistent Austin Arneson captured the tour championship. Elijah Zevenbergen is the best accomplished IMCA Sunoco Stock Car driver the tour has seen, winning for the [Read More]
