IMCA Modified sweep for Shaw during rare weekend visit to Central Arizona Speedway

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (Jan. 28 and 29) – A rare visit to Central Arizona Speedway saw Don Shaw sweep $1,000 to win IMCA Modified features at Casa Grande.  Shaw swept Friday and Saturday main events, taking the checkers ahead of fellow Minnesotan Matt Aukland both nights. He led all 25 laps from the outside pole on opening night, then worked his way up from ninth starting on night two.  “The car was really good and we were able to pull away again following a yellow later in the race on Friday,” said Shaw, newly eligible to qualify for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I didn’t know if I had what I needed to win it Saturday. I got stuck behind another car and fell back to about 12th before I found a good line in (turns) three and four and was able to pass some guys.” Restarts helped him stay close and ultimately catch Aukland for the front spot late in the contest. Cody Thompson, Devon Fouquette and Spencer Wilson followed the front pair across the [Read More]

IMCA STARS sanction new for North Texas Mod Lites

ROCKWALL, Texas – North Texas Mod Lites run under the IMCA STARS banner this season, with race dates at five tracks on the 2022 schedule.  The series travels to Lone Star Speedway, Big O Speedway, Heart O’ Texas Speedway, Abilene Speedway and Superbowl Speedway for 22 events during the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing Point season, then concludes with the Texas Mod-Lite Nationals Oct. 14-15 at Waco. “We kind of a family-friendly traveling series,” explained director, tech inspector and jack of many trades Mark Tunnell. “We try to schedule races every other week so our drivers can do other things with their families, or go to bigger races. That’s us in a nutshell.” North Texas Mod Lites trace its origins to a dwarf car club. Car counts have been on the upswing in more recent seasons and Tunnell sees the new sanction as one way to expedite that growth.  “We have 15-20 regulars now and already know of at least three more new cars,” said Tunnell, who had started his own on-track career in a [Read More]

Michigan racing peers pick Silver Bullet’s Hoonhout for promoter of the year award

OWENDALE, Mich. – Matt Hoonhout will have a second plaque to put on display in the new front entrance building at Silver Bullet Speedway.  Starting his 10th year in charge of the Owendale oval, Hoonhout is now recipient of 2020 Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club and 2021 Michigan Speedway Promoters Association promoter of the year awards.  “I did not expect to receive either of them,” he admitted. “The MARFC award is a great honor. We did not have a banquet because of Covid so I got it at my track. It’s a cool award, probably the second best you can get in the State of Michigan.”  “The MSPA award is the coolest because it’s voted on by your peers, your fellow track owners and promoters.”  He’ll get the MSPA plaque later this spring, in time to have both awards displayed on opening night in the combination ticket booth, restaurant, restroom, gift shop and museum at Owendale, where IMCA Modifieds are on Saturday race cards for a fifth consecutive season. IMCA Stock Car, Modified wins give Madrid first sweep at Central Arizona

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (Jan. 21) – Winning the first feature of the night helped Zachary Madrid win the last one. Madrid was a double winner in the 2022 lidlifter at Central Arizona Speedway, topping both the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event and the IMCA Modified headliner. While he’s won two IMCA features twice on the same night before at other venues, Friday marked the first time he accomplished the feat at Casa Grande.  “The track was heavy. Running the Stock Car feature first helped me a ton figuring out where to run and what line I should follow in the Modified,” Madrid said. “I ran high in (turns) three and four, the middle to bottom in one and two, and wherever I could to get through traffic.” He crossed the stripe ahead of Scott Sluka and Eric Lloyd in the Stock Car feature. Jacob Pace and Kelsie Foley ran 2-3 in the Modified finale. “Everything worked out for us pretty good,” said Madrid, who earned Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligibility along with the [Read More]
