SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 14, 2023) – Five IMCA drivers won feature events and five more wrapped up IMCA.TV Winter Nationals in the Saturday night finale at Cocopah Speedway.

Chaz Baca topped the rain-delayed but caution-free Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event, earning $1,000. Career win number 88 for the defending track and state champion, already Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible, came ahead of Brady Bjella and Brandon Beckendorf.

Tim Ward’s 10th place run was just enough to give him the Winter Nationals title.

Veterans Curt Lund and Mike Albertsen tussled ‘til midway of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car headliner, before Dylan Thornton motored by. 

A late-race restart gave Thornton a clear track ahead and he sped to his second $750 checkers in as many nights. Albertsen ended in second, Shelby Williams was second and always-consistent Chase Berkeley wrapped up the title with his ninth place showing.

Levi Kiefer turned back the clock in dominating the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod finale, taking the lead on the opening stanza and, despite lapped traffic and four stoppages, kept the rest of the field in check. The Winter Nationals win, Kiefer’s career third, was his first since 2016. 

Miles Morris and Jacob Mallet Jr. completed the top three. Shane Paris was 12th in repeating as Winter Nationals champion.

Brandon Bombardo led the charge from the start of the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main and felt some heat from Thomas Daffern before capturing his second win of the week. 

Thomas Daffern and Brycen Daffern ran 2-3 and Zack Tate wrapped up the Winter Nationals crown in fourth.

After emerging from a three-car battle, Jacob Cordova drove to the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact checkers ahead of D.J. Werkmeister.

Kevin Reuter, an active dusty U.S. Navy service member, sailed to third and earned the Winter Nationals crown for the 4-cylinder class.

As was the case the previous six race nights, the finale brought 200-plus IMCA entries to the Somerton speed plant.

Hobscheidt conquers IMCA Modified field on Winter Nationals Night 5 at Cocopah

By Ben Deatherage SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 12, 2023) – Night number five of the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals saw four drivers make their first trips of 2023 to victory lane at Cocopah Speedway. Thursday’s 25-lap Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature was a caution-free affair and Nebraskan Jacob Hobscheidt conquered the field after dealing with traffic at midway, earning $1,000 and Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligibility. Jeremy Mills was the runner-up, with third going Andrew Pearce.  Gregory Muirhead led from the start of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event. Zachary Madrid challenged the Texas racer shortly after a lap four restart, the first of five stoppages during the contest. With two to go, the green flag waved for the final time, Gregory got on the gas and took his carriage to  victory lane. IMCA Hobby Stock winner cashes $1,600 check Saturday at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. – With money added from top to bottom of the purse, the winner of Saturday’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature at Cocopah Speedway goes home $1,600 richer. Included in the expanded purse are $200 prizes for a mystery position finisher and the hard charger of the Bobby’s Territorial Harley Davidson Night at the races event. IMCA Modifieds, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts complete the March 6 card, with IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Shaw Race Cars Western and Big Daddy Race Cars Southern region, KMJ Performance State and track points to be awarded. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Racing starts at 7 p.m.  Spectator admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors 55 and over and military, and free for kids 12 and under. Pit passes are $35. Saturday’s show at Somerton will be broadcast by IMCA.TV.

Cochrun gets confidence boost and $1,000 from IMCA STARS Mod Lite win at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. (April 10) – Californian Kaden Cochrun got a big confidence boost and a check for $1,000 for his fourth straight IMCA STARS Mod Lite win in Arizona. The national points leader pocketed a grand for his Saturday Yuma Auto and RV Night victory at Cocopah Speedway. He’d started ninth, passed A.J. Whisler for the lead on the fourth circuit and led to the end of the 25-lapper. Cochrun led by almost a straightaway before the green, white, checkered finish. J.D. Brown was second and Colin Bender third. “I raced with some of the fastest dudes in Arizona,” said Cochrun, headed next to Bethany, Mo., to spend the summer racing in the Midwest. “It was a huge confidence booster to run so good here.”  He’d won twice at Arizona Speedway and once at Canyon Speedway Arizona before taking the Cocopah checkers.  Cochrun had raced in the Midwest last season when many of the tracks in his home state were idled by Covid-19.
