Vowan victorious in return to Riverside for IMCA STARS Mod Lite Mid-South Nationals

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (Sept. 17, 2022) – Fans at the track where Bryce Vowan grew up in the grandstands to watch him win the inaugural Mid-South Nationals for IMCA STARS Mod Lites Saturday night. Vowan returned to Riverside International Speedway and completed a charge from the eighth starting position to the checkers, earning $2,000 along with a special edition Fender acoustic guitar trophy.  “Any time you can go back to where you started your career in racing, it’s really special,” he said. “I spent a lot of my childhood here at Riverside. I grew up wrenching for my stepdad Mike Campbell when he was racing sprints. Now he’s my crew chief and to come back and to win where it all started for both of us is just something special.”  Blake Wilson, Todd Minner, Troy Naeger and Kevin Simkins rounded out the top five. The 32-car field featured entries from as far away as California and a strong contingent of Tennessee drivers.  Early pole sitter Wilson jumped out to an early lead with John Pitts in second [Read More]

Sites is king in NY-Penn IMCA Series action at Penn Can

By Evan Canfield  SUSQUEHANNA, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2022) – Eddie Sites reigned when the Close Racing Supply NY-Penn IMCA Modified Series presented by Precision Hydraulic & Oil made its return Saturday for the King of the Can at Penn Can Speedway.  Rich Michael Jr and Tyler Stoddard kicked off the 25-lap, $1,000 to win feature for Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds from the front row, but the red flag would be displayed before the end of the first lap for a multi-car incident. Sites was part of that pileup and grabbed back onto the field in the eighth position once the lineup was reset. Michael then took off from the top spot, with Stoddard trying to stay close.  It didn’t take long for Sites to prove why he’s had the car to beat for much of the season as he charged to second by the time the caution flag flew again on lap four.  Sites took a look at every angle possible to make the pass for the lead following the ensuing restart. As the leaders battled, lapped [Read More]

Shenandoah checkers are VSS second straight for Harris

By Jim Haines  SHENANDOAH, Va. (Sept. 17, 2022) – Jerald Harris made it two Virginia Sprint Series feature wins in a row Saturday night, following his run to the checkers at Natural Bridge Speedway with the Saturday checkers at Shenandoah Speedway. The feature-only event had Caleb Harris and Bill Rice leading the field to green, with Rice out first and Harris closing in a couple laps while bringing Billy Hubbard along with him.  Rice had a good line and kept them off until lap eight when Jerald Harris went high and made the pass stick. Hubbard kept working on Rice to make sure Harris didn’t get away and got a big run to second as quickly as he could. Harris and Hubbard were going after the top spot lap after lap but at the cost of tire smoke. Harris used a higher line and Hubbard was trying a low line but with a few laps to go, Hubbard coasted to the infield, done for the night leaving Harris out front and nursing his tires to [Read More]

Reed snares Race to Hunting Season PASS win at Selinsgrove

By Frank Buhrman  SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2022) – Austin Reed captured his second major race of the Pennsylvania Sprint Series season Saturday, leading from start to finish to capture the Pennsylvania Game Commission-sponsored Race to Hunting Season at Selinsgrove Speedway. The win came 2-1/2 months after Reed’s victory in the Nittany 40 at Clinton County Speedway. Those have been the two highest-paying PASS events among the 33 run so far this year. That race had featured a furious battle between Reed and Garrett Bard, but while Selinsgrove was hardly easy, nobody got alongside Reed to attempt a pass, and his final margin of victory over runner-up Josh Spicer of Julian was 1.615 seconds.  The moment of uncertainty for Reed’s win came on lap 17, when Doug Dodson hit the wall in turn two, bringing out the race’s only caution and erasing a huge lead.  But Reed got a good jump on the restart and the crowd’s attention soon turned to a torrid battle for third place between Logan Spahr and Bard. For several laps they traded slide jobs [Read More]
