Point races tighten at Heart O’ Texas

WACO, Texas (Sept. 13) – With only one race left in the 2013 season, point races tightened up in several classes Friday night at the Heart O’ Texas Speedway. Jason Batt used his second place finish in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature to take the lead by one point over Charles Cosper in the championship battle. Zach Riley won the feature and Tristan Carmen raced to third. Cosper finished in sixth. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature was won by Jeremy Oliver. Garrett Rawls took second, and point leader Cody Frank, finished third to maintain a narrow four point margin at the top of the standings. Brothers Kevin and T.J. Green stayed first and second in points after finishing second and third, respectively, in the Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod feature won by Chris Cogburn. Cogburn is third in points. DeYoung continues Great Lakes Nationals domination

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Sept. 14) – Front running drivers usually don’t like to see caution flags come out late in the race, especially when there’s big money on the line. That wasn’t the case Saturday at Crystal Motor Speedway, where Myron DeYoung drove to his third straight and fourth career Great Lakes Nationals title. The $3,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory put him on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. DeYoung started third in the 50 lapper and caught Brady Hollenbeck for the lead on the 12th circuit. Sweatman is Saturday winner at Grays Harbor

By Ben Deatherage ELMA, Wash. (Sept. 14) – The Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifieds had the race of the evening Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway, with Tom Sweatman prevailing in a tight three-car tussle. Jeff Foster initially had the car to beat but lost the lead after a restart just before the halfway mark. From there it would be a battle between several cars for the race lead. The battle would not stop until the final lap when three cars went side-by-side all together coming to take the checkered flag. Sweatman, of Cosmopolis, was determined to be the winner for his first checkers of the season. Defending track champion J.J. Hickle ran away with the 360 sprint feature. Jason Tole notched win number nine of 2013 in the Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks. Chase Goetz would continue to flex his muscle in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets. Beaumont busts through at Salina

By Justin Sly SALINA, Kan. (Sept. 13) – It took 13 months but Pete Beaumont found his way back to victory lane at Salina Speedway. Friday night’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature laurels went to the driver of the no. 88B out of Concordia. Neil Normandin commanded the field from the pole position for 13 circuits. From the fourth row, Beaumont charged to the front early and executed the winning pass with just two laps remaining. Aaron McBride rallied from the back of the pack and placed third. Point leader Mike Traskowsky had tire issues in the “A.” However, the Woodbine racer still has a comfortable margin over McBride in the standings. The turnaround time for Rodger Peck’s return to victory lane was much shorter. Leighton drives Dylan Smith’s ride to victory in Tiny Lund Memorial at Harlan

Just one week after Smith raced his way to victory in the 31st annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s, Smith loaned his car to Bill Leighton for the Tiny Lund Memorial at Shelby County Speedway. Leighton started inside of row two, which was also to the inside of Smith, who was driving a different car for the 22nd annual event. Smith took the lead a handful of laps into the 30-lapper while Leighton ran back in fourth and fifth until the caution flag waved at the midway point. Leighton went to work on the high side when racing resumed and started to challenge Smith before caution slowed action one more time with six laps to go. Murty motors to Border War win at Chateau

By Ryan Clark LANSING, Minn. (Sept. 13) – Damon Murty took advantage of a late restart to drive to victory in Friday’s Border War special for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars at Chateau Raceway. Murty, who started seventh, raced the low side into third place six laps into the event before a caution slowed action. After working his way through traffic racing the low groove, Murty restarted on the outside of row two following the final stoppage just past the midway point of the 20-lapper. He shot to the inside of race-long leader Scott Pippert when the frontrunner pushed entering turns one and two after the green flag was displayed. Murty escaped down the back stretch with the lead and then paced the field for the remainder of the event to earn the $1,000 payday. Ocean’s Pettit Memorial pays $15,003 to IMCA Modified winner

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (Sept. 15) – The biggest IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified payday of the season will come at Ocean Speedway’s third annual Pat Pettit Memorial Shootout this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21. The winner earns a hefty $15,003. The runner-up pockets $5,003 while third place is worth $2,003, fourth place pays $1,203 and fifth nets $1,103. A minimum of $503 will be paid to start the 22-car, 50-lap event. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Larry Shaw Racing Western Region, Allstar Performance State and local track points will be awarded. Callahan collects big time with career first Deery win

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 14) – The presents just kept coming Saturday for Joel Callahan. Callahan celebrated his 49th birthday with his career first Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win. The biggest payday on the 2013 IMCA Late Model tour was good for $7,500 and came during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway. “There are so many good drivers in this series I’m just happy to be able to compete with them,” said Callahan, who got under Chris Simpson on the 33rd of 75 laps and then led to the finish. “We’ve been pretty good this year. We try to set our sights in Deery races to make the top 10, for the competition that’s out there.” Simpson ran in front the first 32 times around the half-mile oval and ended in second. FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 14) – Richie Gustin celebrated a $2,000 feature win and Ronn Lauritzen celebrated a series championship Saturday night at Farley Speedway. Gustin led the last 28 of 30 laps in topping the Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour presented by XSAN main event for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, outdistancing Mitch Morris and Kurt Kile in the Yankee Dirt Track Classic dash to the checkers. Lauritzen, meanwhile finished fourth to win the series championship. Point standings are based on drivers’ best eight finishes over the course of the 11-race series and Lauritzen rallied to edge Mike Van Genderen by two markers for the crown.
