IMCA Stock Car Challenge is Aug. 2 at Dawson County Raceway

LEXINGTON, Neb. – The winner of Dawson County Raceway’s Sunday, Aug. 2 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Challenge earns at least $1,500 and possibly as much as $2,500. Sponsored by Alfred Ward & Son, Elite Sports and Wraps by Wells Design, the Challenge totes a $10,000 main event purse, with a minimum of $200 to start the 25-lap feature. The top 12 out of the heats transfer to a 10-lap pole dash. The lineup for the big show will be set by the finish of the pole dash with a kicker: The dash winner can split $1,000 ($500 each) with the runner-up and invert the 12 spots. The dash winner also has the option of starting on front row along with the runner-up and each of the third through 12th place finishers in the dash get $100. Thomas County Fair Races feature five IMCA divisions 

COLBY, Kan. – A check for $1,000 and a spot on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational go to the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature winner at the Friday, July 31 Thomas County Free Fair Races. A minimum of $125 will be paid to start the Modified main event. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $750 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks both for $500 to win. All applicable points, including local track points, will be awarded in all four divisions. There is no entry fee. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. at Colby. The grandstand opens at 6:30 p.m., hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 8 p.m. Spectator admission is $12 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and free for five and under. Pit passes are $30. St. John rules Arlington Sport Compacts

ARLINGTON, Minn. (July 25) – Brock St. John broke the winning streak of Nate Coopman in Satur­day’s Coors Light IMCA Compact feature at Arlington Raceway. Coopman had won 10 of the past 12 feature events at Arlington. St. John led the entire distance from his front row spot. Coopman started ninth and worked his way through the field of cars but didn’t have enough time to catch St. John. Alan Lahr took third. There were three different leaders in the Eckblad Trucking IMCA Hobby Stock feature, Dakota Robinson, Shane Honl and finally Cory Probst, who took charge with two laps left and went on to win his sixth consecutive feature. The Unhinged Pizza IMCA Northern SportMod feature also saw three different leaders, Tom Malchow, Tim Bergerson and then Matt Looft, who set the fast pace the last three times around the oval. Smith avoids late-race obstacle at I-90

(July 25) – The biggest Saturday night obstacle at I-90 Speedway for Colin Smith was a car exiting to the pits with just two laps to go in the Coffee Cup IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature. The close call came as Elijah Johnson left the track via the backstretch exit as Smith was about to lap him. Smith picked up his fourth win while Jeff Edgington crossed in second. The first-year I-90 Speedway driver has now finished in the top two in each of his last six starts.

Streaks continue at Shawano 

SHAWANO, Wis. (July 25) – Two streaks continued Saturday at Shawano Speedway. Travis Van Straten raced to his 10th consecutive IMCA Sunoco Stock Car victory, taking the checkers in front of Dan Michonski for the fourth straight week. Dustin Loberger was third. Marcus Yarie led the final two circuits in topping the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event ahead of Jerry Wilinski and Mitch Stankowski. The IMCA Sport Mods began with Tyler Thiex leading the pack to the line. Brandon Nygaard would grab the lead on lap one and pace the field for the first few laps until Thiex took the spot on lap four. The lead was short lived as Jordan Barkholtz took the top spot on lap six and would show the way until lap 11 when Wyatt Block caught up with Jordan Barkholtz and battled for a few laps before Block broke away and cruised to an easy Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod win. Dowell tops Dodge City Stocks 

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 24) – Randy Dowell made a late move around race-long leader Trevor Schmidt to capture his first IMCA Sunoco Stock Car win at Dodge City Raceway Park. Schmidt led from the outset after starting on the pole but soon had Dowell and Brett Copeland nipping at his heels in the non-stop 15-lapper. Dowell’s persistence paid off, as he slipped under Schmidt exiting turn two on the 14th round and held the point the final lap-and-a-half to post the win.  Schmidt crossed the stripe a close second with Copeland third. In Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified action, Bucklin’s Clay Sellard rallied past Jack Kirchoff on the high side for the point at the midway point of the 20-lapper and checked out for his fourth DCRP score of the year. Taylor adds second Governor’s Cup trophy to IMCA awards collection

MANDAN, N.D. (July 24-25) – Jeff Taylor added a second Governor’s Cup trophy to his collection on night two of the 25th annual special for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds at Dacotah Speed­way. Taylor pulled away from Jason Grimes and Robert Hellebust following a series of restarts, then checked out on the field after the last restart. His win was good for $1,600 and a spot on the bal­lot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Jeremy Keller and Grimes battled for the lead early in the main event. Keller got the best of that battle while Hellebust passed Taylor for third. Taylor rallied to retake the position and quickly chased down Grimes in pursuit of second. On lap seven, Taylor blew by Grimes and two laps later passed Keller for the lead. While running second, Keller had mechanical problems and brought out the first caution as he limped back to the pits. Ward scores sixth of season at Tri-City

AUBURN, Mich. (July 24) – Tri-City Motor Speedway win number six on the season came Friday for A.J. Ward. Lucas Small led the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified field to green but Mitchell Hunt found room on the backstretch down low and took the lead on lap one. Ward made his way from the middle of the pack and found his way to the lead on lap four. Point leader Myron DeYoung followed up to the second position but did not have the car to keep up with Ward. DeYoung finished second and Chad Wernette was third.

Rigsby repeats at Thunder Hill 

By Larry Lowrey Jr. MAYETTA, Kan. – Bryan Rigsby held off challenges from Matt Haid and Mat Stallbaumer in winning his second straight Repair Service IMCA Stock Car main event Saturday at Thunder Hill Speed­way. Stallbaumer, previously the only repeat winner this season, owned the top spot early and went door-to-door with Rigsby. As they came down the front stretch, the two made contact and Stallbaumer spun to bring out the yellow. When the race went back to green, it was Marvin Griffith Jr.’s chance to take the top spot from Rigsby but a couple yellows halted his momentum. A late-race restart saw mechanical issues plague the former champ. Haid pulled along side Rigsby in the late laps while Stallbaumer worked his way from the back of the field. Ward tops Modified main at Harken Memorial 

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 25) – Tim Ward was the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified winner at Satur­day’s Gary Harken Memorial, when Kossuth County Speedway honored a long-time track employee who passed away earlier this year. One of the highlights of the evening came as Harken’s grandson Alex Christensen of Nevada, Mo., displayed the American flag around the track during the national anthem and led the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods for their parade lap. Ward held off Tad Reutzel, Mike Jergens and Jesse Hoeft for his third local win of the summer. Hoeft used a late-race pass of Reutzel to place second with Reutzel third. Kevin Opheim rocketed from 10th starting to the front spot just five laps into the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature and he held onto the lead the rest of the way.
