Abelson aces Double Down Spring Nationals IMCA Modified feature

(April 18-19) – Chris Abelson and Karl Brewer were the big winners as Raceway Park kicked off its 2014 season with the WinnaVegas Casino Resort-sponsored South Dakota Double Down Spring Nationals. Abelson worked his way up from the seventh starting spot on Friday and flashed by Jason Schneiders to capture the $1,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature victory. Finishing close behind the new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier were Schneiders, Jay Noteboom, Chris Mills and Ricky Stephan. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature saw a last-lap pass for the win with Jason Ward sliding by Bo Lundquist. Aaron Cain topped Todd Gereau for the third finishing position. Brewer took the Karl Sport Modified feature win over Rusty Montange, Chance Bracht, and Todd Boulware. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature went to Adam Armstrong. Nichols races from 20th to $750 Great Plains Series payday

HUGOTON, Kan. (April 18) – Using a high line that got faster as the laps counted down, Mike Nichols raced from last to first in winning his fourth straight Dirt Track Central Jax Sports Grille Great Plains Series event. Nichols had drawn the 11th starting spot for Friday’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car tour headliner at Dirtona Raceway. Just five laps into the feature he had to check up when two cars ahead of him got crossed up in the corner. Contact from another car got Nichols sideways and when the caution came out, he was restarting at the back of the 20-car field. Staying on the high side, Nichols took the lead from pole starter Nick Tubbs with four to go, bringing Perry Misner along with him. Shute scores IMCA Modified Frostbuster honors at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (April 19) – Todd Shute shot to the front and made short work of his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified foes in Saturday’s Frostbuster feature at Boone Speedway. A single caution interrupted the 25-lapper. Eventual runner-up Troy Cordes stayed close on the initial green and then again on the restart, but Shute was unchallenged most of the distance in the $1,000 to win event. The defending Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational winner, Shute made the most of the high line and had no lapped traffic to slow him down. Mark Elliott, Russ Dickerson and Jimmy Gustin completed the top five. Also winning Frostbuster features postponed from April 5 and again from April 12 were Donavon Smith in the IMA Sunoco Stock Cars and Mike Pruitt in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Misner takes top IMCA Stock Car series honors at DCRP

(April 19) – Perry Misner raced from deep in the field to take the $750 winner’s share in Saturday’s 25-lap Dirt Track Central Jax Sports Grille Great Plains Series feature event for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars at Dodge City Raceway Park. After struggling with a tight car in his heat race, the former track champion won the “B” feature and then raced from seven rows deep to take command midway through to the added money win. “I really had to work for that one,” the Garden City racer commented afterward. Indeed he did, capitalizing on a tremendous lap eight restart and then fending off strong challenges from Jason Rogers over the final rounds. Smith sails to Saturday checkers at Eagle’s Ice Breaker Challenge

In what was arguably the best race of the Ice Breaker Challenge Weekend, Dylan Smith raced from 12th starting to win the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified finale, chasing down Chris Abelson for the $2,000 checkers. “That was pretty good after starting 12th. I made some good passes early and kept pushing,” said Smith, already on the ballot for September’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I’m sure glad that the Sprints widened out the track for our feature. With all of the beating and banging I decided to move up top. Neal adds to Deery Series success with fourth career win at Jackson County

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 19) – After four lead changes involving four different drivers, Terry Neal won a Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Jackson County Speedway for the fourth time Saturday night. Neal caught Andy Eckrich coming to the white flag in the 40-lapper, then held on to beat Eckrich to the checkers by not much more than inches. The IMCA Late Model tour victory was worth $3,000. Jeff Aikey, Nate Beuseling and Tommy Elston completed the top five. Neal had won the first of three straight Deery features at Maquoketa during his 2005 series championship season. Elston started from the pole and set the fast pace the first 15 circuits despite a couple early cautions that kept the field close. He gave way to Beuseling on lap 16. Elston, Neal, Aikey and Eckrich ran two and three wide behind Beuseling as the front five separated themselves from the field. Humphries wins first Fast Friday feature at Eastside

By Jim Haines WAYNESBORO, Va. (April 18) – Defending tour champion Tom Humphries proved the fastest in the first of four Fast Friday Virginia Sprint Series events of the season at Eastside Speedway. Humphries had to reel in Chad Worrell, taking advantage and the lead when Worrell got too high and then holding off Jerald Harris for the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car feature victory. Completing the top five were French Grimes, Worrell and Tony Harris. Charlie Ware and Chris Ware paced the field to green but Worrell found his way to the front on lap three. He stayed smooth up top and traffic was no problem as the laps clicked off but the bottom was slowly getting better and both Humphries and Jerald Harris began reeling him in. DeVilbiss is double winner in Border States Racing Series twin bill at Desert Thunder

PRICE, Utah (April 11-12) – Everything went right for Zane DeVilbiss in the inaugural Border States Racing Series doubleheader at Desert Thunder Raceway. DeVilbiss swept Friday and Saturday IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified features at Price, earning his career 96th and 97th feature wins in the division. After starting eighth on opening night, DeVilbiss finally got the best of Michael Hale after a back-and-forth battle for the front spot on the tacky oval. Aaron Spangler, Dylan Hatch and Dusty Safley rounded out the top five in the time-shortened show. Track conditions were on the slick side Saturday as DeVilbiss made his way from 11th starting to first in a fast-paced 30-lapper. Casey Delp, Aaron Spangler and Hale were going at it three-wide when DeVilbiss zipped by on the extreme high side. Delp, Hale, Brody Spangler and Safley finished second through fifth, respectively. Harris tops Virginia Sprint Series opener

(April 12) – As pilot of the North of Rome Farms sprinter, Jerald Harris raced his way to the front taking the opening race of the pavement season for the Virginia Sprint Series Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field with Charlie out first on lap one and Brian Lawson taking up the chase. Lawson went around Ware into the lead. Tom Humphries was up to second with French Grimes, Harris and Anthony Linkenhoker all close behind. Lawson still led at halfway after a quick caution for a slowing car. Lawson took off on the restart but Harris was on a charge and got to third and two laps later he was on Humphries. Like lightning, Springsteen streaks to Deery Series checkers at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (April 12) – With a thunderstorm in the forecast, Colby Springsteen proved lightning-fast on the track Saturday night at West Liberty Raceway. Springsteen caught Nick Marolf in traffic on the 10th circuit, then ran away with the win in the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event, leading the last 30 laps and taking the checkers nearly half a straightaway in front of Jeff Aikey. The IMCA Late Model tour feature was slowed by caution just once, on lap 12. Aikey and early leader Marolf swapped second following the restart; Aikey got the spot for good with 10 laps left but couldn’t muster a challenge to Springsteen, who earned $3,000 for the victory.
