Becker starts holiday weekend with Sprint win at Dodge City

(July 2) – The Independence Weekend got off to an early start at Dodge City Raceway Park with Brett Becker picking up the $1,000 winner’s share in the Mel Hambelton Ford Racing POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series vs. DCRP Sprint Car Clash. Becker gridded the feature outside the front row but it was 16-year-old pole starter Kyler Johnson gunning into the initial lead of the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car main event. Fourth starting Jake Bubak handled Becker on lap two to move into the runner-up spot. By lap five Becker found the bottom to his liking, moving back by Bubak and taking the lead one lap later from Johnson. Working through traffic much of the way, Becker fought off a bid from Bubak at the midway point and then had Johnson on his tailtank again after a Bubak miscue on the 16th lap. Gould inherits opening night Red River Tour win

ARDMORE, Okla. (July 1) – It’s not the way he wanted to win but William Gould went home with the $1,000 IMCA Modified checkers from Wednesday’s Red River South Tour opener at Southern Oklahoma Speedway. Gould was third across the stripe but inherited the win when Tyler Stevens and Chaz Baca were both disqualified in post-race tech for front suspension violations. Gould had gotten caught up in a fender bender in his heat race, won his ‘B’ feature and started the main event from 11th. “This was the first time we’ve even had a good run in the tour. It seems like we’ve always had motor problems or something before,” said Gould, who changed two flats on the trailer and got home about the time the sun was coming up the next morning. “The top of the track stayed dominant. Off Road hosts Wednesday Don Weyrich Classic

(July 1) – There was plenty of action on the track during the Don Weyrich Classic on Wednesday night at Off Road Speedway, an event held to honor Norfolk’s long-time driver and member of the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame. Three of the feature winners started in the front row and won handily, among them the father and son combination of Jason (IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks) and Cameron Wilkinson (IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars) and Brian Osantoski (Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods) while Cory Dumpert checked out on his IMCA Sunoco Late Model foes. Off Road Speedway will not hold races on Saturday, but will return to action on July 11.

Braaten wins third straight at Yreka

(June 27) – The Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod division at Siskiyou Golden Speedway has been the realm of Jorddon Braaten in 2020 and such was again the case Saturday night. The Central Point, Ore., chauffeur won his third straight race of the campaign at Yreka. Medford, Ore., racers Mike Medel and Merissa Henson were second and third, respectively. Siskiyou Golden Speedway returns for a doubleheader Independence Day weekend presented by Hoppes Motorsports. Friday, July 3 will feature IMCA Modifieds and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods, while Saturday, Independence Day, has sanctioned SportMods on the ticket.

Winebarger, DeVolder ring up wins at Diamond Mountain Speedway

By Stephanie Deatherage SUSANVILLE, Calif. (June 26-27) – Their dominating IMCA Modified runs put Collen Winebarger and Shane DeVolder in victory lane at Diamond Mountain Speedway’s weekend Showdown. Winebarger led every circuit to win his fourth overall feature of 2020 and earn $1,500. Already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, he was chased to the checkers by fellow Oregon racers John Campos and Jeff Lovell. Robert Miller ended the night in fourth and Ryan McDaniel was fifth. On Saturday, DeVolder led every lap but the first one to earn a huge victory at the Lassen County Fairgrounds and gained his second overall win of the year, good for $1,500 and an All-Star ballot berth. McDaniel ended in second with Winebarger getting third. Jim Pettit II posted a fourth-place finish with Riley Simmons rounding out the top five. Springfield streak continues as Tillman tops IMCA Modified main

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (June 27) – Veteran Jody Tillman showed everyone he hasn’t forgotten the way to victory lane Saturday at Springfield Raceway. Tillman took advantage of a lap 16 caution and then rode the top groove to pass defending IMCA Modified champion James Thompson to keep the new winners streak going at The Quick Quarter of Jerry Hoffman’s Springfield Raceway. On the initial start, Thompson quickly shot from seventh to overtake Shawn Duncan and Andrew Smith to take control by lap three and began to open ground on the field. Tillman, who started ninth in the 20-lap feature, began to pick his way forward by searching both the high lane and low lanes. The turning point of the feature occurred on lap 16 when Smith went off the end of turn three while in a three-wide battle for position. Tillman picked the high groove on the restart. Sweigart adds PASS win no. 2 at Selinsgrove

(June 28) – Nick Sweigart became a multiple 2020 Pennsylvania Sprint Series winner Sunday when he captured the 20-lap feature run as part of Speedweek at Selinsgrove Speedway. Sweigart, who started fourth and took the lead from Ron Aurand on lap five, was never seriously challenged after that, working lapped traffic perfectly. The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car win was his second of the year and his seventh overall with PASS. “I didn’t really know where I needed to be, top or bottom,” Sweigart said in victory lane of the lapped traffic situation, “so I was kind of floating back and forth, and I figured I’d run the top until I felt pressure, and I really didn’t feel any pressure. Walp dominates in BAPS RaceSaver Sprint feature

(June 27) – All John Walp wants is a little improvement from his second place finish in 2019 BAPS Motor Speedway Pennsylvania Sprint Series standings for to first in 2020. He’s off to a solid start toward that goal. Walp wired the field to win the 20-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature Saturday at BAPS. The Wapwallopen driver has now scored two of his three career PASS victories at York Haven. In victory lane, he noted that he was able to keep the car low on the track and thwart efforts by defending national champion Ken Duke to move up. The track was slick and tricky, with drivers having to “slow down to go fast,” and Walp was able to extend his lead after every restart. Duke ran second the whole race and clearly had a strong car but couldn’t get by Walp. Hard charger Olson holds of Arlington Hobby Stock challengers

ARLINGTON, Minn. (June 27) – Passing seven cars and taking the quick lead wasn’t even the most challenging part of Matt Olson’s run to the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers Saturday at Arlington Raceway. Once in front, Olson had to hold off Jed Trebelhorn and then five-time and defending track champion Cory Probst to stay there. Probst ended in second while Luke Trebelhorn got around his brother Jed to take third. Tenth starting Zach Davis caught Matt Looft in the final turn for the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod victory and Bill Johnson led the last five circuits in a caution-free IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car contest. Brandon Beckendorf also started 10th, and won the IMCA Modified main event. Dan Mackenthun led start to finish in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main and Nate Coopman took the Mach-1 Sport Compact checkers.

Schulte, Docekal dash to first wins of season at Benton County Speedway

By Jerry Mackey VINTON, Iowa (June 28) – Mark Schulte and Joe Docekal scored first local wins of the season on the night Benton County Speedway hosted the world’s largest candy dash. Mark Schulte took the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature win ahead of two of the most accomplished drivers to ever strap into a Modified. Greg Kastli had a great night with a heat win and a second place finish in the main. Troy Cordes followed Kastli under the checkers in third. Joe Docekal has been a frontrunner in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod division this season but the wins have eluded the Dysart driver. Docekal was not to be denied on Sunday night however as he took the lead from early leader Kyle Olson and went on to score the feature win ahead of Brady Hilmer and Jason Doyle.
