I-37 checkers fly for Carroll

By J.M. Hallas PLEASANTON, Texas (May 19) – After some early season bad luck, Chris Carroll parked his IMCA Modified in the winner’s circle Saturday at I-37 Speedway. Thanks to his wife, son and a couple grand in repairs, Carroll got by point leader Rick Green for the lead. Talon Minten was able to show him the nose after a late restart but Carroll was able to hold him off. “It’s my wife and son supporting me, first off,” commented Carroll. “Colin put the car together and he made it come off the turns. It rotated through the middle real good. Rick (Green) slipped up a little bit and let me go.” “My son put the car back together after the crash earlier this year. There was about $2,000 in damage,” he continued. “We basically torn the right front off and bent the bird cages, tires and wheels. Luckily, I have a kid that loves this stuff and got it all back together. He’s a pretty good mechanic.” Minten ended in second and Green took [Read More]

Thornton stars at Central Arizona

By Jeff McSpadden CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (May 19) – Jeremy Thornton was the IMCA Modified star Saturday at Central Arizona Speedway. Starting seventh in the sixteen car IMCA Modified field, Thornton quickly made his way into the fourth spot diving low on the speedway entering turns one and two after the drop of the green flag, sixth starting Trevor Miller also made a bold move into the second spot behind pole starter and early leader, Mike Strobl. Trevor Miller drove by Mike Strobl for the lead on lap two while Thornton was working his way up from seventh starting to third. Thornton made quick work of Strobl for the runner up position and set out after Miller. Taking advantage of a lap five restart, Thornton pulled even with Miller and edged ahead as the sixth lap was scored. Thornton got a great jump on the next restart and began to put some distance between himself and Miller, with Tyler Mecl climbing into the third position. Thornton’s advantage of better than a second held up until the caution waved again with two laps left. [Read More]

Jones repeats at Tri-City Motor Speedway

By Roger Williams AUBURN, Mich. (May 18) – Despite his 10th place start, Nate Jones was quickly in the lead and on his way to a second straight Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified victory Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway. Twenty-two Modified drivers took the green flag for their 20-lap main event with Don Sautter leading the opening laps. It only took IMCA rookie and former pro stock champion Jones three laps to go from 10th to the lead. Once there, he checked out from the field as everyone else would fight for second. A late caution bunch the field for one last shot for hard-charging Chad Wernette to snatch away the lead and possibly the win. However, Wernette’s bid fell short as Jones picked up his second win in a row by two car lengths. Craig Vance had a stellar run marching from 13th to third. Toby Steele and Matt Szecsodi rounded out the top five. A regular season record of 129 cars poured into the pits Friday at Auburn.
