Port Royal checkers are PASS fourth of season for Bard

(July 18) – Garrett Bard notched Pennsylvania Sprint Series win number four of the season at Port Royal Speedway Saturday, coming from seventh starting spot – the biggest advance to a win since the season opener May 30 – and holding off a determined veteran Nathan Gramley at the end. With defending IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car national and PASS champion Ken Duke Jr. and Gramley, both former Port Royal champions, on the front row, it might have seemed that things would be settled there, but Bard and several other challengers had other ideas. Gramley built a nice little lead in the early laps, but a caution bunched the field again, looking to improve on three straight runner-up finishes. Mayden, Bloom, Ashley find the right groove at The Grove

(July 18) – For the second occasion in 2020, the engines roared at Cottage Grove Speedway with a full pit area at the historical ¼-mile clay oval Saturday night. More than 30 IMCA Modifieds inhabited the house for their second race of the year and Jake Mayden had his way with the field in earning his first local checkers of 2020. John Campos wound up second with third going to Bricen James. The Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods would witness a giant-slaying as Hunter Bloom was large and in charge of the main event. The Eugene racer took control of the lead on lap one and remained there after the final circuit. It marked the first occasion that Bloom has graced victory lane in the division at The Grove. Eaton, Topper get first Bethany feature wins

BETHANY, Mo. – Again, a great car count filed into the pit area at Bethany Speedway Saturday night and fans were treated to an unpredictable and exciting night of racing. Jacob Blair took the point at the drop of the green in the IMCA Modified feature over Dustin Miller. They battled until a yellow came out. Steven Bowers Jr. has been on absolute tear the last few weeks and on the restart drove around both into the lead. Shayne Bailey followed Bowers to the front but couldn’t deny Bowers another win. Sixteen IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars lined up for their feature which came to an early halt when Carson Masoner went for a ride and rolled in turn two. Anthony Whitham led for a couple laps until Thomas Roberts took control. Mich Ross worked high and low but could never clear Roberts. Steve Starmer saw all that in front of him and found his line. Carter collects Eagle IMCA Hobby Stock checkers

By Greg Soukup EAGLE, Neb. (July 18) – After he was in and out of the lead, Dave Carter stood in victory lane following Saturday’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature at Eagle Raceway. Carter got the front spot for good on the 12th circuit and led Michael Hansen and Tyler Jackson across the stripe. Jordan Grabouski motored to the front of the IMCA Modified field with five laps to go and paired that victory with a runner-up finish to Jason Danley, who earned the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car victory with a last-lap pass. Matt Andrews was the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod winner and Tyler Masek topped the Mach-1 Sport Compact main event. Next weekend is Junior Fan Club Salute, presented by Colby Ridge. All fans 12 and under receive free front gate admission. Front gates open at 5 p.m. with adult admission being $12. Hot laps start at 5:45 with racing at 6:30.

Berry scores Sunday IMCA Modified win at Benton County

By Jerry Mackey VINTON, Iowa (July 19) – A beautiful July night greeted a nice crowd at the Benton County Speedway, The Bullring Sunday night. Well over 100 cars took part in the fast-paced racing program that saw the final checkered of the night wave before 9:30 p.m. The IMCA Modifieds saw a 20-car starting field take the green flag. Ethan Braaksma took off from his pole position start and went on to lead the first half of the main event. Tom Berry Jr. worked to the front from his seventh position start and took over the point as the event passed halfway mark. Berry went on to score another Bullring win over Braaksma and Mark Schulte. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars have turned into the Murty family show on Sunday nights. This week it was Damon Murty taking advantage of a great starting position on the outside front row, leading the race flag to flag. Virginia Sprint Series win at Shenandoah goes to Leraas

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (July 18) – On the hot, humid, summer day, the real heat was on the track as Mike Leraas won his first Virginia Sprint Series race of the season by a few feet. Saturday’s feature-only pavement show for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars at Shenandoah Speedway had Chris Ware and Leraas pace the field to green with Leraas out first and Jerald Harris on his bumper. Bill Rice raced with Ware to get third as the front two were already hard at it for the top spot lap. Rice got by Ware as Billy Hubbard was all over Rice for third. Lap after lap, Harris got in the turns better but Leraas was better on the exit and they were never more than a few feet apart. Hubbard got by Rice for third with a few laps to go. Frye scores PASS first feature win at Trail-Way

A year ago to the weekend, the Lewisberry racer, still one of PASS’ youngest, equaled his best career finish – second place – when the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series stopped at the Hanover oval. Friday night, he topped that. Frye scored win number one in the 25-lap feature, in his 42nd career PASS start. He’d taken the top spot when early race-leader Larry McVay and third-place Johnny Scarborough were penalized for clipping the restart cone following a lap eight caution, putting Frye in the lead over Doug Dodson. That’s how they stayed, as Frye handled lapped traffic with ease, while Dodson blew a brake line on lap 13, handicapping his effort. Roebuck leads most important lap at Off Road

(July 18) – James Roebuck, despite being the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod division leader in laps led at Off Road Speedway this season, won his first local feature this season and led every lap of the 20-lap event in the process. Last week, Roebuck had the lead most of the way until a tire issue sidelined him. A change in his approach helped the Genoa driver garner three wins on consecutive nights, the third being Saturday’s in Norfolk. “We’ve been struggling a little bit this year. We cut down a tire for the last couple laps last week, so that took us out for that night,” Roebuck said. “It seems like we’re pretty quick at the beginning, but we just need to finish the races. Braaksma takes IMCA tour career first checkers in Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights opener at Park Jeff

JEFFERSON, S.D. (July 20) – Ethan Braaksma grew up watching the IMCA Modified Dirt Knights and wondering what it would be like to race with them. On Monday night, the young Iowan became a first-time winner when the 2020 Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights Tour opened at Park Jefferson Speedway. Braaksma passed veteran Bob Moore on the 18th of 25 laps, then led the defending track champion through lapped traffic and across the finish line. The win paid $1,500 and put Braaksma on the ballot for the upcoming Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I knew I had to keep my momentum up. I was a little hesitant about going to the top,” he said. “There was a lot of moisture on the bottom. I knew if I could just hit it right I could hold the bottom better.
