Deal capitalizes on late restart for IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour win at Alta

ALTA, Iowa (July 22) – Nick Deal became the sixth different winner in as many IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour events this season Wednesday at Buena Vista Raceway, on a night when Ricky Stephan nearly accomplished the impossible. Stephan had to restart at the back of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified field after spinning before the first lap was scored. He used multiple lines to work his way through traffic and was leading when what proved to be the final caution waved with three circuits left. Deal had run near the front for most of the 25-lap feature. He capitalized on that late restart, passing Stephan for the $1,000 feature win and an early berth on the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Defending HDT champion Mike Van Genderen regained sole possession of the point lead with a third-place finish, one spot better than former co-leader Kyle Brown. Long-time leader Chris Abelson ended in fifth. Jeremy Mills led in the early going from his outside row one starting spot. Abelson rode the top side of [Read More]

Rookie Droste races to first Deery win at Quad City

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (July 22) – The top rookie contender in the Deery Brothers Summer Series became a first-time IMCA Late Model tour winner Wednesday night at Quad City Speedway. Tyler Droste led all 50 laps from the pole, beating Matt Ryan to the $3,000 checkers by the better part of a straightaway. “We’ve been close a few times. To finally get the win feels pretty good,” said Droste, at little more than 19 years of age the youngest driver to win a main event in the series’ 28-plus year history. “I knew that starting on the pole would give us a pretty good chance and we had a good car, but I didn’t know we’d be that good.” Brunson Behning, Jeff Aikey and point leader Justin Kay completed the top five. Kay, the defending tour champion, had started last in the field of 22 and steadily worked his way toward the front. Andy Nezworski, Kay’s closest competitor in the point standings, was sixth. Tony Harris first to checkers on Fast Friday at Dixieland

By Jim Haines ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (July 17) – Tony Harris has been struggling a little lately with handling in his IMCA Eagle Motorsports Sprint Car but on the third Fast Friday feature of the season he got everything right for his first win of the year. The Virginia Sprint Series victory came at Dixieland Speedway. Charlie Ware and Harris paced the field to green with Harris out first and Ware taking up the charge. The fast, short track suited Harris’ style as he stayed on the cushion while the challengers lined up to fight for the lead. Tom Humphries got by Ware but could only get on the leader’s bumper and never around. It went wrong for Humphries when he got together with a spun car. That incident ended his night and allowed Jerald Harris the next try for the lead. While cars sliced and diced behind him, Tony Harris stayed in the top spot to the checkers. Jerald Harris and Daren Bolac were next across the stripe. Feature results – 1. Tony Harris; 2. [Read More]

Murray takes second Dodge City IMCA Modified Stampede triumph

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 18) – David Murray Jr. showed exactly why he ranks as a four-time Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified national champion by taking his second Modified Stampede victory in three years Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. Starting from the front row outside, Murray gunned into the lead at the drop of the green flag and paced all 30 circuits to take the $1,200 winner’s share after sweeping through the inaugural version of the event in 2013. With 36 entries on hand, Murray ran third in his heat and then redrew the front row outside starting position for the main event. The field was in trouble at that point. “The top was the place to be, it was fast up there,” the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier said from victory lane.  “The bottom looked to be pretty good, too. I saw Cody (Gearhart) down there some early, but I never went down to try it.” While Murray pounded the top of the track for all 30 laps, [Read More]
