Campos collects Cottage Grove checkers for first Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout victory

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 26) – John Campos earned $1,000 plus a dose of redemption along with the checkers when the Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout returned to Cottage Grove Speedway Monday night. Campos led the last 16 of 35 laps, running side-by-side with Mark Wauge much of that distance before taking the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying victory. “We were persistent on the bottom,” said Campos, who had started seventh. “He (Wauge) was right there. We had that late-race caution on lap 29 and checked out a bit from there.” The former super late model driver has found a more economical division in the IMCA Modifieds. Campos has followed the Shootout each of his three seasons in the sanctioned divisions and had posted second- and fourth-place finishes since being disqualified in post-race tech on opening night. Wauge set a wicked fast pace from the start but was slowed by a couple cautions. Shortly after a lap 16 restart, he came under pressure from the hard-charging Campos. Campos completed his pass [Read More]

Droste checks out at Britt, collects career first Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers

BRITT, Iowa (June 27) – Eleven minutes and some odd seconds was all it took for Tyler Droste to win his career first Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature, and $3,000. Droste started on the pole of the Tuesday night main event for IMCA Modifieds during Hancock County Speedway’s Salute to Veterans special and led every time around the track in a 30-lapper that ran green to checkers. He was half a straightaway ahead of Joel Rust when he caught up with the back of the 24-car field at midway. Rust cut into Droste’s advantage but the leader mastered lapped traffic and won handily. Rust ended in second while tour point leader Kelly Shryock ran third. Twelfth starting Ricky Thornton Jr. and 11th starting Hunter Marriott completed the top five. Droste became the fourth different winner in as many Dirt Tour events so far this season. He was already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Dustin Larson was the $2,500 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature winner and Austin Luellen earned $2,000 along with the [Read More]

Strickler strikes gold in green to checkered Fury at the Fairgrounds feature

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (June 24) – One night after scoring a $10,000 victory, Kyle Strickler earned another $5,000 by picking up the win in the IMCA Modified feature in Shawano Speedway’s the Fury at the Fairgrounds. The 30 lap IMCA feature saw Strickler, the two-time IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s champion out of Mooresville, N.C., take the lead at the drop of the green flag. Nebraska racer Dylan Smith, also a former Super Nationals king and with a national title to his credit as well, took the lead on lap two. Smith used the high side of the track to race to a sizeable advantage over Strickler by lap 10.  Strickler, known by the nickname ‘The High Side Tickler,’ searched the track looking for an advantage. Strickler slowly began to close the gap on Smith by using the inside groove of the track.  On lap 21, Strickler got to the inside of the leader exiting turn two and took the lead. As Strickler and Smith ran 1-2, 10th starting Hunter [Read More]

Dotson collects Sunday checkers at Cottage Grove

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 25) – Another first-time tour winner made his way to victory lane following Sunday’s Wild West Modified Shootout main event at Cottage Grove Speedway. Ethan Dotson took the $1,000 checkers at an event contested by 45 drivers from Oregon, California, Nevada, Montana and Colorado, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. Collen Winebarger paced the field early. Several cautions kept the race close and Winebarger was challenged past midway. The leader had a close call late in the race.  While navigating lapped traffic, he made contact with a slower car and nearly lost the lead before the yellow flag came out for separate incident. Not too long after the restart, he was passed on the inside by Dotson. The California charger made the maneuver on lap 31 and took off after that. He built a sizable advantage and won his first career Wild West Modified Shootout feature in only three starts. Dotson became the 17th different driver to have won with the series and the fifth Californian to [Read More]
