Burmeister Breaks Through as CJ Speedway Returns to Action

By Jerry Mackey   COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (April 28, 2023) – Friday night saw the second night of racing at the CJ Speedway located on the Louisa County Fairgrounds in Columbus Junction. A beautiful day gave way to a typical cool spring evening and the motors were humming on the super-fast 4/10-mile oval.   The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds main event took the green with veteran racer Troy Cordes taking the lead from his outside front row starting position. Cordes built a commanding lead as the race went green to checkers.  Defending track champion Jarrett Brown moved into second as the race neared the midway point and set out to chase down leader Cordes, who had built a commanding lead. Lapped traffic came into play late in the race and Brown was able to use traffic to reel in Cordes. The two front runners split a slower car as the race off turn four to the checkers saw Cordes score the win by a bumper ahead of Brown. By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 2, 2023) – All five IMCA feature events came down to the final laps, with winners being determined on the final straight away Friday at CJ Speedway. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event came down to the final corner as race leader Kurt Kile encountered lapped traffic and shot to the extreme high line of the speedway in turn four. This allowed an opening on the bottom side of the track and Jarrett Brown was there to take advantage of the opening.  Brown was able to get to the checkers less than a car length ahead of Kile. The 77 of Kile led the majority of the race only to be bested by Brown on the last lap. Kile took second ahead of Dakota Simmons. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event was another action-packed event that saw close racing, some bumps and a driver racing from the back twice. By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 9, 2025) —  The Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stocks raced for a $750 top prize Friday night at CJ Speedway, located on the Louisa County Fairgrounds. Jason Schutterle took early command and led the majority of the race, but as the laps wound down, the lead pack tightened to four drivers all vying for the bonus money. Schutterle, Kale Hemsley, Corey VanDerwilt, and young Preston McDonald entered turn four on the final circuit in a four-car battle for the win. Somehow, McDonald emerged from the pack and edged out Schutterle by a bumper to capture his first career B&B Racing Chassis Northern Region victory in thrilling fashion. The top four were separated by less than a car length at the finish, with Hemsley taking third and VanDerwilt finishing fourth. The win was a memorable one for McDonald, who has been a regular at CJ Speedway for the past couple of seasons.
