SPENCER, Iowa (June 29) – A really good lap put Kyle Brown in victory lane while a really fast line did the trick for Derek Green on night two of the Karl Kustoms Midwest Madness Tour.

Brown got the best of Cody Thompson in a green, white, checkered IMCA Modified finish Tuesday at Clay County Fair Speedway. Green put on a show of his own in racing to IMCA Sunoco Stock Car career win number 98.

Both $1,000 feature wins carried September bonuses, putting Brown on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot and making Green eligible for B & B Chassis All-Star Invitational qualifying.

Top-notch rookie contender Thompson had passed Chris Abelson for the Modified lead, then swapped the front spot with Brown before the late caution. Brown restarted on the inside, caught Thompson the next time around and then focused on becoming an All-Star candidate.

“I just made a really good lap. It was a really good race. It was fun,” he said. “I know Cody is always good on the top side and I wasn’t going to beat him there. I started messing around and found the middle groove in (turns) three and four and right around the tires in one and two.”

“When I took the lead I was telling myself ‘Don’t lose it because this puts you on the ballot,’” he added. “It means a lot to us to get elected to that race and we’ve done it five years in a row. It’s not easy to win a race that gets you on the ballot. There are a ton of good drivers around here. There aren’t any slouches.”

Thompson, Mills, 12th starting Dakota Sproul and Kelly Shryock completed the top five finishes. Lucas Lamberies started 23rd and ended in sixth.

Like Brown, Green started from the seventh spot. He made the most of the fast top line, passed David Smith and Damon Richards following a restart midway through the Stock Car 25-lapper and led to the checkers.

Justin Luinenburg raced his way to second and Richards was third. Dallon Murty and Smith were scored next.

“The competition here was the best of anywhere pretty much,” said Green, planning to give his ride some TLC before catching specials in Wisconsin and then Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans shows.

Also taking $1,000 checkers were Josh Sidles in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Matt Looft all the way from 17th starting in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods.

Sidles drew a front row start and led start to finish with defending national champion Cory Probst making his way to second and Luke Ramsey taking third. Next across the stripe were Daniel Wauters and Drew Barglof.

Justin Svoboda and Gregg Hamman swapped the lead before Looft completed his charge to the front on lap 16. Cory Haugland was second, Svoboda held on for third, Alex Fett was fourth and Cam Reimers rounded out the top five.

And Drake Bohlmeyer dominated in winning the Mach-1 Sport Compact main event, ahead of Jaedon Erickson.

Completing the top five were Zach Bohlmeyer, Logan Kelly and Kaytee DeVries.
